Mon Oct 21 201313:06Bears 'fear the worst' with Jay Cutler injury
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on SportsCenter Monday the Bears "fear the worst" with Jay Cutler's groin injury.
Per Schefter, the team is worried Cutler will be lost "indefinitely." The Bears have a Week 8 bye, but there seems to be very little chance Cutler would be ready in Week 9. Consider Josh McCown Chicago's starting quarterback moving forward. Coach Marc Trestman's system is very QB-friendly, but it's an obvious downgrade in terms of arm talent and -- pending Monday's MRI results -- potentially devastating to a Bears team whose defense has collapsed.

Sun Oct 20 201314:38Jay Cutler done for day after groin injury
Jay Cutler is done for the day after sustaining a groin injury in the second quarter of Sunday's Week 7 game at Washington.
Cutler was injured while taking a second-quarter sack. His legs appeared to stretch awkwardly and he was walking like a hunched over 90-year-old man as trainers led him to the locker room. Cutler was just 3-of-8 for 28 yards with no touchdowns and one interception before leaving. Backup Josh McCown has come on.

Sun Oct 20 201314:10Jay Cutler heads to locker room in after hit
Jay Cutler left Sunday's Week 7 game against the Redskins in the second quarter with an undisclosed injury.
Cutler took a hard hit while being sacked by Skins NT Chris Baker. He appeared to clutch his hip, stayed down for a few moments and then walked off with a pretty good limp. Trainers then took Cutler to the locker room. Backup Josh McCown has come on.

Fri Oct 18 201320:28Jay Cutler on fire statistically
Jay Cutler has completed 64 of his last 89 throws (71.9 percent) for 759 yards (8.53 YPA) with a 6:0 TD-to-INT ratio and two successful two-point conversions.
It's a two-plus-game stretch. Even better, Cutler gets to tee off on the Redskins' defense in Week 7. Although there have been a handful of bumps along the way, Cutler is playing noticeably more controlled, efficient football in first-year coach Marc Trestman's offense, which currently ranks third in the NFL in points scored and 11th in yards. Thu Oct 10 201323:40Cutler tosses two TDs as Bears outlast Giants
Jay Cutler completed 24-of-36 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns in Chicago's 27-21 Week 6 win over the Giants.
Cutler added three scrambles for 20 yards. With his No. 1 receiver pouting after drawing only five targets in Week 5, Cutler targeted Brandon Marshall early and often, with the duo hooking up for two first-half scores. Cutler also took a few deep shots at impressive second-year pro Alshon Jeffery, but they couldn't connect. The Bears played things fairly conservatively, seemingly confident that the Giants would give away the game on offense. They did in the form of three Eli Manning picks. As for turnovers, tonight was Cutler's first giveaway-free game of the season. The high-end QB2 gets Washington's porous defense in Week 7.

Sun Sep 29 201316:25Cutler commits four ugly turnovers vs. Lions
Jay Cutler doomed the Bears in their Week 4 loss to the Lions, completing 27-of-47 passes for 317 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
He also lost a fumble, which Detroit returned for a touchdown. Cutler's turnovers were the difference in a game Chicago went on to lose 40-32. All three of Cutler's picks were terrible decisions. The first went into double coverage, while both the second and third were horrendous overthrows. Cutler's footwork was lacking in his fourth game under Marc Trestman. Cutler is now on pace for 4,040 yards and 32 touchdowns, but also 32 turnovers. He's a boom-or-bust QB2.

Mon Sep 23 201300:10Cutler leads Bears to win on Sunday night
Jay Cutler completed 20-of-30 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's 40-23 Week 3 win over the Steelers.
He added four carries for 11 yards. Cutler wasn't asked to do much offensively and played with a lead for the entire game, with his lone touchdown coming on a 17-yard strike to Earl Bennett late in the fourth quarter. He averaged just 5.3 yard-per-attempt, but didn't have any turnovers and was efficient in the short-to-intermediate passing game. Cutler is now 68-of-101 (67 percent) for 693 passing yards with six touchdowns and three interceptions through three games.

Sun Sep 15 201316:22Cardiac Cutler narrowly guides Bears past MIN
Jay Cutler completed 28-of-39 passes for 290 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Chicago's 31-30 Week 2 win over the Vikings.
It was vintage Cutler, and that includes the bad. Still prone to holding onto the ball for too long, Cutler got stripped for a fumble six, threw an interception on a tipped ball on 1st-and-goal from the one-yard line and stared down Brandon Marshall long enough to allow Harrison Smith to jump the route on his second pick. Nevertheless, the Bears' passing offense continues to look more competent under Marc Trestman, and though Marshall remains by far Cutler's favorite target, he's doing a better job of spreading the ball around. Cutler remains too erratic to be counted on as a weekly QB1, but is an ideal plug-and-play QB2.

Sun Sep 8 201317:07Jay Cutler engineers win with 2 TDs, 242 yds
Jay Cutler completed 21-of-33 passes for 242 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in the Bears' Week 1 win over Cincinnati.
He tacked on 16 yards rushing. Cutler is absolutely making improvements under QB guru Marc Trestman, who has his talented quarterback getting rid of the ball quickly and utilizing more of Chicago's weapons than just Brandon Marshall. Behind Marshall, three other Bears saw six-plus targets against the Bengals. Cutler is very much on the back-end QB1 radar and has a favorable matchup in Week 2 against the Vikings. He's an every-week starter in two-QB leagues.

Sat Aug 24 201300:14Jay Cutler carves up Raiders despite drops
Jay Cutler completed 12-of-21 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown, and rushed twice for 13 yards in Friday night's third preseason game.
His stats were hurt by four drops by Chicago's wide receivers and tight ends, but Cutler was very sharp otherwise against the pathetic Raiders. Through three preseason contests, Cutler is 22-of-34 passing (64.7 percent) for 236 yards (6.94 YPA), two touchdowns, and two picks. Cutler is a strong QB2.

Thu Aug 15 201321:05Cutler completes 4-of-5 passes on Thursday
Jay Cutler completed 4-of-5 passes for 38 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in Thursday night's preseason game against the Chargers.
All five of Cutler's passes were intended for Brandon Marshall. The score came on a simple five-yard back-shoulder throw in which he stared Marshall down. The pick was thrown deep down the middle into double-coverage. Through two preseason games, Cutler is 10-of-13 for 94 yards and a 1:2 TD:INT ratio.

Wed Jul 31 201318:50Trestman impressed with Cutler thus far
Bears coach Marc Trestman is impressed with Jay Cutler's grasp of his offense through the first week of camp.
"I think he's doing an excellent job," Trestman said. "I think he's practicing very efficiently. He's throwing the ball away and there's nothing wrong with that with the defense that we have. He's checking it down a lot during the practices, all of us have seen that, finishing his progressions." The references to "checking down" are an indication that Cutler is getting serious about not forcing so many balls into tight coverage. The Bears offense is a bit of an unknown, but Cutler is shaping up as a high-end QB2.

Thu Jul 25 201314:47Bears GM Emery: Cutler 'fully dialed in'
Bears GM Phil Emery described Jay Cutler as "fully dialed in" during Chicago's offseason program.
"No one worked harder during the strength and conditioning aspect of our offseason," said Emery, who also noticed changes in Cutler's leadership. "I see him involve himself more with all of our players - our younger players, taking players to the side. ... So I see a guy that's very committed to improving his individual skills and to interact with the players on the team and to provide leadership." Cutler is a sneaky upside QB2 in his contract year.

Wed Jul 24 201315:48Bears won't do Cutler extension before 2014
Bears GM Phil Emery stated Wednesday that the team will not be signing any players to extensions during the 2013 season.
This applies particularly to contract-year QB Jay Cutler and franchise player DT Henry Melton. Cutler, as he's publicly said he wants to do, will "bet on himself" and go the Joe Flacco route, hoping a big season in Marc Trestman's offense leads to a big 2014 extension. Trestman is proven as an outstanding QB manager and manipulator. We believe Cutler is making a smart bet.

Tue Jul 16 201320:47Cutler claims he's not worried about contract
Jay Cutler insists he isn't worried about his contract situation.
Cutler isn't signed beyond this season. "I haven't thought about it in a while, actually," Cutler claimed in a Tuesday radio interview. "That stuff takes care of itself. As long as we're winning football games and I'm playing well, hopefully they keep me around. If that doesn't happen, we'll see how it plays out." The Chicago Tribune reported Tuesday the Bears were mulling a Cutler extension before bringing on Marc Trestman as coach. The implication being, Trestman wants to see what he has in Cutler before entering into a long-term marriage. Whether it's via the franchise tag or a new deal, the odds are high Cutler will still be a Bear come 2014.

Tue Jul 16 201309:19Bears have thought about Cutler's next deal
Sources tell the Chicago Tribune that the Bears discussed giving Jay Cutler a new contract before Marc Trestman was hired.
The number being bandied about was a $15 million annual rate. But it appears that Trestman came in and said he wants to see Cutler execute his offense for a season before making a long-term commitment. To Cutler's credit, he has not issued a single complaint as he enters the final year of his deal. "You've got to win games to earn those contracts. ... So we'll play it out and see how it goes," he said earlier this offseason.

Tue Jul 9 201311:37Jaws: After 7 seasons, Cutler has 'plateaued'
After studying Jay Cutler's 2012 game tape, ESPN's Ron Jaworski believes Cutler has "plateaued" and failed to get better "from year to year."
Jaws left the door open for Cutler to improve under new coach Marc Trestman, and still loves his willingness to "pull the trigger" versus tight man coverage. But Jaworski believes Cutler's sometimes overly aggressive mentality has made him an oft-undisciplined player prone to "reckless, undisciplined plays, bad decisions, scattershot throws." Added Jaws, "Marc Trestman will coach him hard. It is now up to Jay Cutler to accept that coaching."

Fri Jun 14 201319:11Bears working to speed up Jay Cutler's clock
The Bears emphasized speeding up Jay Cutler's "clock" at OTAs and minicamp.
New coach Marc Trestman and QBs coach Matt Cavanaugh want Cutler to get rid of the ball quicker, and "kept a verbal running clock" every time he dropped back to pass. Cutler has taken 148 sacks over the past four seasons. "Protecting the quarterback isn't just the line's responsibility, or the protectors, it's the quarterback's responsibility too," Cavanaugh explained. "He can't hold onto the ball forever. We've stressed that we want the ball out."

Tue May 14 201312:59Bears QB coach: Cutler borderline brilliant
Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh said Jay Cutler is "borderline football brilliant."
Cavanaugh made the assertion after watching film and overseeing four offseason workouts. It's high praise from a guy who has worked with Randall Cunningham, Joe Flacco and Phil Simms. Cutler projects to take a step forward in 2013 based on coaching alone. The improved offensive line and addition of Martellus Bennett are icing on the cake.
