Mon Sep 5 2011 | 19:17 | Report: Umenyiora to miss 'at least' 2 games |
NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reports that RE Osi Umenyiora (knee surgery) will miss "at least" the season's first two games. |
It sounds like Umenyiora's return target is Week 3 against the Eagles, although there's no telling at this point if it's a realistic goal. Umenyiora had surgery on his right knee in mid-August. ESPN's Adam Schefter put his timetable at 4-6 weeks at that time, and La Canfora's new report would seem to support it. Jason Pierre-Paul will make multiple starts to open the year. It's fair to wonder if Umenyiora will be effective or a full-time player upon return. |

Mon Sep 5 2011 | 12:46 | Giants rule out Umenyiora for Week 1 |
Giants RE Osi Umenyiora (knee surgery) has been ruled out for Week 1. |
"No. I don't think so," said coach Tom Coughlin when asked Monday if Umenyiora could make it back for the opener. "It's a little early." The Giants will start Jason Pierre-Paul at right end, where he'll square off for the majority of Sunday's game with Redskins LT Trent Williams. Williams is coming off a dominant preseason, but JPP is good enough to give any lineman fits. |

Fri Aug 19 2011 | 13:41 | Report: Umenyiora could miss up to six weeks |
Citing a person close to the Giants' defensive end, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Osi Umenyiora's Friday knee surgery could sideline him for "4-6 weeks or longer." |
The original timetable was 3-4 weeks, via Giants.com. Schefter did some digging, and the surgery may be more severe than the team suggested. The Giants were smart to avoid upgrading an injured Umenyiora's contract. They'll count on Jason Pierre-Paul to be an every-down player early in the season, and continue to use SLB Mathias Kiwanuka as a defensive end in the nickel package. |

Fri Aug 19 2011 | 11:18 | Umenyiora out 3-4 weeks after knee surgery |
Giants RE Osi Umenyiora is out 3-4 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his troublesome knee. |
It wasn't a phantom knee injury, after all. Umenyiora complained of knee "soreness" after ending his holdout, and rumors he might need the joint scoped proved true. The timetable will likely keep Osi out of the Giants' opener, and perhaps more games based on his ability to recover. Jason Pierre-Paul will take over as New York's starting weak-side end. If "JPP" plays like he's capable, Umenyiora will have a tough time getting his job back. |

Mon Aug 15 2011 | 19:10 | Umenyiora moves back into first team |
Giants RE Osi Umenyiora was immediately re-installed with the first-team offense when he returned to practice Monday. |
Despite a mammoth preseason opener (seven tackles, two sacks) Jason Pierre-Paul moved into a rotational role. "JPP" will now be Umenyiora and LE Justin Tuck's backup at both end spots. Umenyiora has agreed to play the 2011 season for $3.125 million after initially holding out for a new contract. The Giants may still leave him on the trade block because Pierre-Paul is so good. |

Sun Aug 14 2011 | 19:03 | Umenyiora will practice with Giants Monday |
Osi Umenyiora (knee) will return to practice with the Giants Monday. |
The Giants offered to put incentives into Umenyiora's deal, but he turned them down citing unfairness. Instead, he'll play out the season on his $3.125 million base salary. Umenyiora says his decision to return was influenced by his feelings for his teammates, coaches and the fans. Left unsaid was that all of the leverage now rests with the Giants. |

Sat Aug 13 2011 | 09:58 | Schefter: Umenyiora unlikely to be traded |
ESPN's Adam Schefter believes Osi Umenyiora will be a member of the Giants this season. |
Schefter hardly ever goes out on a limb, so consider this another pretty compelling piece of evidence that Umenyiora isn't going anywhere this year. He's expected to begin practicing on Monday. |

Thu Aug 11 2011 | 16:44 | Umenyiora (knee) cleared to resume practicing |
Osi Umenyiora (knee) was cleared to resume practicing after meeting with a specialist Thursday. |
Umenyiora will still have to meet with Giants medical personnel, but GM Jerry Reese hopes to have him back on the practice field Monday. Reese indicated that the two sides are "continuing to work through some contract issues." It sounds like the worst is over on that score. |

Thu Aug 11 2011 | 10:46 | Report: Osi Umenyiora drops contract demand |
Osi Umenyiora is suddenly willing to "give up his demand for the Giants to redo his contract or trade him," a source tells the New York Daily News. |
Umenyiora appears ready to cave. He's meeting with a specialist in Atlanta about his knee today and is tentatively expected to be cleared to return to practice Monday. The incentive package that the Giants offered earlier is still on the table and Umenyiora will likely accept that and move on. He'll likely rotate with Jason Pierre-Paul until he reaches full strength. |

Wed Aug 10 2011 | 16:34 | Osi Umenyiora looks 'quick and explosive' |
Allegedly dealing with a knee injury, Osi Umenyiora reportedly looked "quick and explosive" as he participated in pass-rush drills on the side of Giants practice Wednesday. |
Umenyiora reportedly showed no signs of knee problems during the 15-minute side workout, exploding out of his stance, shooting up-field, and practicing some swim and spin moves. He's scheduled to visit a knee specialist in Atlanta later today. Umenyiora still hasn't gone through team drills in camp. |

Tue Aug 9 2011 | 20:07 | Umenyiora to see specialist for knee |
Osi Umenyiora will head to Atlanta to have a specialist check out the knee injury that has kept him from practicing. |
The visit is "to see if we can get him on the field," agent Tony Agnone says. Umenyiora reportedly has no plans to take the field until he gets a contract extension. We wouldn't expect to see him practicing even if the specialist gives him the green light. |

Mon Aug 8 2011 | 07:59 | No update in Umenyiora standoff |
Coach Tom Coughlin confirmed Sunday that there is no new update in the Osi Umenyiora standoff. |
As of Sunday morning, ESPN New York confirmed that there had still been no movement in talks. Umenyiora is asking for his contract to be restructured so he gets more incentives and a chance to become a free agent after this season. The Giants aren't biting. We're not expecting Umenyiora to take the practice field anytime soon, with Jason Pierre-Paul continuing to run with the starters. |

Fri Aug 5 2011 | 21:49 | Umenyiora's knee injury not serious |
The New York Daily News believes it's a "good bet" that RE Osi Umenyiora's knee pain "would suddenly go away" if the Giants restructured his contract. |
In other words, the meniscus injury isn't serious. GM Jerry Reese spoke with Umenyiora's agent Friday, but the sides remain in a standoff. Though the Giants were willing to discuss additional incentives at one point, Umenyiora wants the additional money guaranteed. Umenyiora would, however, be amendable to incentives if the Giants were willing to take the final year off his contract to make him a free agent next season. |

Thu Aug 4 2011 | 22:07 | Umenyiora now blames absence on sore knee |
Giants RE Osi Umenyiora now claims he is sitting out training camp because of a "sore knee," and the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the injury may require surgery. |
Umenyiora is reportedly dealing with a meniscus cartilage problem. It's no secret that he wants a new contract or a trade, so Umenyiora may be milking the injury to peeve the Giants. If he indeed needs knee surgery, Umenyiora will be even harder to trade. Jason Pierre-Paul is now working as a starter in training camp, with Mathias Kiwanuka back at strong-side linebacker. |

Thu Aug 4 2011 | 00:19 | Report: Umenyiora 'fuming' over Giants' move |
Osi Umeyiora was reportedly "fuming" Wednesday morning when he discovered the Giants had pulled his permission to seek a trade. |
"He is sure they could've traded him," one source close to Umenyiora told the New York Daily News. "They had a lot more interest in him than they thought they would." In addition to the half-dozen teams already mentioned as potential trade partner, beat writer Ralph Vacchiano reports the Bears "jumped in late." Umenyiora isn't going to be practicing anytime soon even in the face of fines or a suspension "Then it becomes a matter for the union," said a source, "and that's when it could get really ugly." |

Wed Aug 3 2011 | 16:36 | Umenyiora told not to practice on Wednesday |
According to ESPN New York's Ohm Youngmisuk, disgruntled Giants DE Osi Umenyiora has been "excused" from Wednesday practice. |
Youngmisuk reports Umenyiora was told by GM Jerry Reese to go home and "clear his head," and that he would be welcome back on Thursday morning. Just when it seems like this situation couldn't get any uglier, it does. |

Wed Aug 3 2011 | 14:57 | Report: Umenyiora will refuse to practice |
A source close to Osi Umenyiora predicts the disgruntled pass rusher may claim he's not healthy enough to practice after being denied a trade. |
As we suspected, this saga isn't over yet. Though Umenyiora has yet to practice, coach Tom Coughlin confirmed it has nothing to do with the 29-year-old's offseason hip surgery. The Giants are expected to challenge Umenyiora if he sits out, and the NFLPA is "watching this mess closely" to ensure that there's no punishment. |

Wed Aug 3 2011 | 13:32 | Umenyiora no longer allowed to seek trade |
The Giants informed Osi Umenyiora and his agent Wednesday that they are no longer permitted to seek a trade partner. |
Umenyiora's agent was unable to find a team willing to pay the Giants' asking price, which was reportedly still a first-round pick despite a Baltimore Sun report to the contrary. The Giants hope this decision "nips the distraction in the bud," though it could have the opposite effect. Umenyiora has made it clear that he wants a trade or the long-term extension that was promised. |

Tue Aug 2 2011 | 23:09 | Report: Giants want 2nd-rounder for Umenyiora |
A league sources tells the Baltimore Sun that the asking price for Giants DE Osi Umeyiora has dropped to a second-round pick. |
The same source confirms that five teams are in the hunt, including the Ravens and Patriots. Several members of the Ravens front office are urging GM Ozzie Newsome to pull the trigger, but he's reportedly concerned about Umenyiora's history of hip and knee injuries. Newsome also has salary cap issues to consider with Ray Rice and Joe Flacco in line for extensions. Signing Haloti Ngata to a long-term deal would helping free up space, lowering his 2011 salary. |

Tue Aug 2 2011 | 21:14 | Report: Umenyiora to be traded by week's end |
Newsday's Tom Rock reports DE Osi Umenyiora will be traded by the end of the week. |
Newsday's articles are behind a pay wall, so the details are unclear. The Seahawks, Ravens, Broncos, Chargers, and Rams were named as suitors in a previous report, and we've also seen the Browns mentioned as a candidate. Umenyiora's agent has had contract with 21 teams. It's still hard to imagine any team meeting the Giants' first-round asking price. |
