2B Cory Spangenberg (quad) continues to improve but remains a ways off from resuming baseball activities. With his speed so much a part of his game, Spangenberg's returned isn't imminent as he's yet to start running.

2B Cory Spangenberg, who is on the disabled list with a quad injury, might begin rehab assignments next week, manager Andy Green said Wednesday.

2B Cory Spangenberg went 2-for-4 with one RBI and his first stolen base of the season Sunday. In the three-game series at Colorado, Spangenberg went 5-for-13 (.385) with one double, one triple, one homer and seven RBIs.

Spangenberg is out of the lineup Sunday against the Dodgers, MLB.com's Bill Center reports.

Spangenberg had started the previous 17 games for the Padres, but will get the day off for the season finale, with Clint Barmes earning a start in the middle infield in his place. Though he hasn't hit for much pop this season, Spangenberg has batted .271 while getting on base at a strong .333 clip. Barring any major offseason moves for the Padres in the middle infield, Spangenberg should be in line for a full-time role in 2016.

Spangenberg went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored in a 3-0 win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday.

The young second baseman shows some flashes of brilliance and it;s all a matter of consistency for him. In 102 games played, Spangenberg has nine steals and that may be his most worthy attribute for fantasy owners going forward. He has shown some pop at the minors, but his strikeout rate and walk rate would indicate that it will be tough for him to maintain a decent average at the major league level.

Spangenberg is out of Thursday's lineup against the Giants.

Spangenberg will take the night off with the Giants sending ace Madison Bumgarner to the mound. As a result, Jedd Gyorko will shift over from shortstop to cover second base, while Clint Barmes will enter the lineup at shortstop.

Spangenberg is not in the lineup Friday against the Giants.

Spangenberg will be held out of the starting lineup for a second straight game, though there's no indication of any issues. Jedd Gyorko will get another start at second base and bat fifth in his absence.

Spangenberg is out of the lineup Thursday.

He has been in the lineup pretty regularly of late, but Jedd Gyorko will start at second with Yangervis Solarte starting at third Thursday.

Spangenberg will start at third base and bat leadoff Wednesday against the Rangers.

The 24-year-old has made 10 starts atop the order already this season, with Wednesday marking his second time there since his mid-August activation from the DL. Spanenberg has gone 13-for-41 with seven extra-base hits since his return, including two (a double and a triple) in Monday's loss.

Spangenberg (knee) was reinstated from the 15-day disabled list Friday.

He missed 38 game with a left knee contusion and had been playing rehab games at Double-A and Triple-A prior to his activation. Look for the Padres to deploy him several times per week at second base and third base.

Spangerberg has seen most of his rehab work at third base, but he made an appearance at shortstop last week, an indication that the Padres may be toying with the idea of shifting him around the infield.

The 24-year-old has played mostly between third base and second while with San Antonio, but it's worth noting that he also made a start at shortstop last week, his first appearance at the position as a pro. Shortstop remains a glaring hole for San Diego, but it's uncertain if the club has any immediate plans to use Spangenberg at short in the majors. He's also without a set date for a return to the active roster.

Spangenberg has been out since late June with the knee sprain, but after increasing baseball-related activities in recent days, it looks as though he's finally progressed to the point where he's ready to play. The infielder's month-plus absence will probably require him to spend at least a couple games in the minors before his activation from the DL, but where he'll report from there remains to be determined. Jedd Gyorko has since taken back the starting second base job with the big club and has performed markedly better of late, which could force Spangenberg to settle in for a regular role at Triple-A El Paso.
