Thu May 21 201514:21Ballard (Achilles) not participating in this week's OTA practice...
Ballard (Achilles) is not participating in this week's OTA practices, the Indianapolis Star reports.
Ballard tore his Achilles last year during a late-July practice, forcing him out for a second consecutive season following tearing an ACL early in the 2013 season. It's hard to predict how he'll fit into the Indianapolis offense until he returns to practice.
Tue Aug 26 201415:50Ballard (Achilles) placed on injured reserve Tuesday
Ballard (Achilles) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Colts.com reports.
Ballard tore his Achilles during a late-July practice, forcing him out for a second consecutive season following last year's Week 2 ACL tear. With Ballard out of the fold, Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw will carry the bulk of the Colts' backfield duties.
Tue Jul 29 201419:40Report: Colts 'aren't giving up' on Ballard
The Indianapolis Star reports the Colts "aren't giving up" on Vick Ballard (Achilles', out for season), and that he'll get "another shot" in 2015.
We'll see. Ballard was already talent-deficient before injuries wiped out his 2013-14, and he'll be a 25-year-old former fifth-round pick come next July. Ballard has averaged 3.9 yards on 224 career carries. He's not a hold in Dynasty leagues.

Sat Jul 26 201416:28MRI confirms torn Achilles for Vick Ballard
An MRI confirmed Vick Ballard suffered a torn Achilles during Friday's practice.
He's done for the season. It's the second straight year-ending injury for Ballard after he missed all but one game of 2013 to ACL surgery. Ballard has one year remaining on his rookie deal and will attempt to return in 2015. The Colts haven't ruled out adding a veteran running back to replace Ballard on the active roster.

Fri Jul 25 201416:44Vick Ballard to undergo MRI on ankle
Colts RB Vick Ballard will undergo an MRI after injuring his left ankle during Friday's training camp practice.
The extent is currently unclear, but Ballard had to be carted off the field on Friday. With Trent Richardson sitting out as a precaution, Ahmad Bradshaw worked as the Colts' starting tailback. Dan Herron was with the twos.

Fri Jul 25 201414:42Vick Ballard suffers left ankle injury
Colts RB Vick Ballard was carted off the field with a left ankle injury during Friday's practice.
Ballard suffered the injury running a pass route, and could put no weight on the joint after getting up. We'll have another update when we know more.

Wed Jul 23 201409:21Vick Ballard (ACL) says he's been cleared
Vick Ballard (ACL) said he's been cleared.
Ballard tore his ACL during a practice ahead of Week 2 last season, so he's had significantly more rehab time than someone like Rob Gronkowski. Ballard expects to be on the field from Day 1 of training camp as he fights with Ahmad Bradshaw for reps behind Trent Richardson.

Sat Jul 5 201420:38Vick Ballard on track for training camp
Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) is on track for training camp.
Ballard didn't participate in offseason workouts and will open camp as the No. 3 running back behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw. He's reportedly close to 100 percent, but his effectiveness coming off a major injury is in question. Ballard is 10 months removed from September ACL surgery.

Thu May 29 201414:20Vick Ballard sitting out this week's OTAs
Colts RB Vick Ballard (knee) isn't participating in this week's OTAs sessions.
A report earlier this month said Ballard was "close" to 100 percent, but he's unlikely to be full go before training camp. Ballard is No. 3 on the depth chart.

Mon May 5 201410:47Vick Ballard reportedly close to 100 percent
Vick Ballard (knee) is reportedly close to 100 percent.
Ballard is nine months removed from his ACL tear. The ligament may be near 100 percent, but we've repeatedly seen players struggle to regain full burst until they're at least a year-plus removed from this injury. That's especially true for non-freakish specimens. Ballard, who posted an uninspiring 3.85 YPC as a rookie in 2012, will start off camp behind Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw.

Fri Mar 21 201410:58Vick Ballard (knee) remains on schedule
Colts GM Ryan Grigson said Vick Ballard's (knee) recovery remains on schedule.
Ballard tore his ACL in Week 1 last season but supposedly looks "great" with OTAs set to kick off next month. He might to get much action this spring, but Ballard should be 100 percent for training camp. With Ahmad Bradshaw back in the fold along with Trent Richardson, Ballard is going to have to earn his carries.

Thu Feb 27 201408:43Grigson wants competition at every spot
When asked about his running back situation, Colts GM Ryan Grigson said "the best players play."
Grigson wasn't singling out Trent Richardson, he was simply talking up a Seahawks-esque mantra for his entire team. Still, if Vick Ballard (torn ACL) can make it back in time for training camp he'll have a shot to earn carries -- especially if free agent Donald Brown walks. "Iron sharp as iron. We're going to try to have the most competition at each position group and whoever wins that spot is going to be the starter," he said. Ballard has a career 3.91 YPC average while T-Rich was at 2.91 in 14 games with the Colts last season.

Mon Jan 13 201410:23Vick Ballard says he'll be ready for OTAs
Vick Ballard (knee) believes he'll be ready for OTAs.
Ballard tore his right ACL in a practice ahead of Week 2, part of the domino effect that led to the Colts' disastrous Trent Richardson trade. He might get cleared for some activity during OTAs, but his real goal should be participating fully in 2014 training camp. If the Colts let impending unrestricted free agent Donald Brown walk, Ballard would be the No. 2 back behind T-Rich.

Fri Sep 13 201312:50Vick Ballard tears ACL, out rest of season
Updating a previous item, Colts RB Vick Ballard tore his ACL in Thursday's practice and will miss the remainder of the season.
The Colts have already placed Ballard on season-ending injured reserve and promoted Kerwynn Williams from the practice squad to serve as the No. 3 back. Ahmad Bradshaw is now locked into lead-back duties, while first-round megabust Donald Brown will mix in as the No. 2. Brown isn't worth picking up in fantasy leagues. Bradshaw was already ticketed for a bigger role this week, but he's now placed himself on the RB2 radar against the Dolphins. Ballard already lacked unique athleticism; he was a pedestrian runner. This injury will set him back.

Fri Sep 13 201312:25Vick Ballard done for season with knee injury
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Colts RB Vick Ballard will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury in Thursday's practice.
Ballard popped up on the injury report Thursday as a limited participant, but there was zero indication the injury was this severe. This news vaults Ahmad Bradshaw into the unquestioned lead-back role, making him a RB2/flex option this week against the Dolphins. Donald Brown will handle backup duties while the Colts look for a No. 3 back. We'll update Ballard's specific injury once we hear it.

Thu Sep 12 201316:18Vick Ballard added to injury report Thursday
Vick Ballard was added to the Colts' injury report with a knee issue Thursday, and was listed as "limited."
The move appears purely precautionary. Firmly ahead of Ahmad Bradshaw on the depth chart for the time being, Ballard is in the FLEX conversation despite his talent limitations.

Tue Sep 10 201308:17Pagano raves about Ballard's pass pro
Coach Chuck Pagano called Vick Ballard's Week 1 pass protection performance "unbelievable."
One of the areas Ahmad Bradshaw was thought to have a significant edge on Ballard was in blocking. But Pagano said Ballard was 6-for-6 in blitz pickups against the Raiders, something that goes a long way for coaches. The incumbent had 14 touches as the leader of the committee while the ex-Giant played just 15 snaps and got eight touches. Bradshaw's rise to the top of this backfield may take a little longer than initially expected.

Sun Sep 8 201316:21Vick Ballard operates as Colts lead back
Vick Ballard rushed 13 times for 63 yards and lost five yards on his lone reception in the Colts' Week 1 win over the Raiders.
Ballard was the lead back in Indy's opener, playing ahead of Ahmad Bradshaw. Bradshaw managed eight touches, and will likely see more opportunities next week against the Dolphins. Ballard is barely roster worthy in fantasy leagues with limited talent and a role that is very likely to diminish.

Thu Sep 5 201312:21Pep Hamilton is unsure of Week 1 RB split
Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said his running back pecking order for Week 1 is "yet to be determined."
If there's ever going to be a time when Vick Ballard gets a big workload, this is it. Ahmad Bradshaw (foot) is still working his way into the mix and the Colts figure to be nursing a big lead against the lowly Raiders. Eventually, we're expecting Ballard to take a clear backseat to Bradshaw in the Colts' committee.
