ESPN AFC South blogger Paul Kuharsky believes free agent SS Glover Quin is still a candidate for the franchise tag.

The Texans have made keeping Quin a priority, but there haven't been any updates on long-term talks. League wide, there's yet to be a single tag applied ahead of Monday's deadline, but that won't remain the case much longer.

The Jets are expected to pursue free agent SS Glover Quin as a replacement for LaRon Landry.

Word at the Combine is the Jets already realize they can't afford free agent Landry. Quin won't be especially cheap, either, so cap-strapped New York could easily come up empty. The Texans have identified Quin as a priority to re-sign.

Quin was one of the Texans' top playmakers in 2012, and has excelled after making the switch from corner to safety in 2011. Still only 27 years old, he should get a long-term deal.

Quin, who turned 27 earlier this month, led the Texans with 85 tackles this season and finished behind only Kareem Jackson in interceptions. He's been a full-time starter since moving from cornerback to safety in 2011, and is a strong candidate for a long-term contract.

"I would love to be here," Quin said. "I love this organization, I love the city, I love the fans, I love this team. ... I feel like it could get done. I don't see why it couldn't get done." Quin led the Texans with 85 tackles this season, adding 14 passes defensed and two interceptions. He's started 60 of 64 games in four seasons.

Glover Quin's transition from corner to safety has been "effortless," according to coach Gary Kubiak.

Mario Williams' move to outside linebacker and Brian Cushing's shift inside draw all the headlines, but the secondary is where Houston really needs to improve. "It's a natural position for [Quin]," Kubiak said. "I think his career's got a chance of taking off. [Safety] is where he really belongs." With CB Johnathan Joseph and DC Wade Phillips now in town, the Texans figure to be much tougher against the pass.

Quin was a corner for his first two seasons and is now learning both safety spots. By adding Johnathan Joseph in free agency, the Texans actually improved two positions. Expect their pass defense to show improvement this season.

The new coaching staff couldn't have been more clear about Quin's position switch from cornerback, and he's obviously gotten the message. The Texans will need to prioritize a new starting corner like Johnathan Joseph in free agency.

Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips reiterated last week that he envisions Glover Quinn as a free safety, not a cornerback.

"His best abilities would be at safety, and we're going to look at that," Phillips confirmed. Quinn was Houston's top corner in 2010, although that's not saying much. The Texans will enter free agency in need of a starter opposite Kareem Jackson because Quinn's conversion appears to be a done deal.

Coach Gary Kubiak said he is hesitant to move Glover Quin to safety without adding a starting-caliber corner.

Quin can certainly play safety, but plugging one hole in the Texans' defense just opens up another leak. "What we get done in the offseason will have a lot to do with where [Quin] lines up because he's still the best corner on our team," Kubiak said.

The Houston Chronicle suggests that CB Glover Quin could move to free safety in 2011.

The move would fill a need, and Quin has safety size at 6'0/205. This scenario has also been suggested by the Chronicle's Lance Zierlein. Quin was exposed in man coverage last year, allowing six TD passes after giving up none in 2009. He had three interceptions, although they all came in one game.

"He has to wear a protective cast, but he's OK to go," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He practiced with it all week." Quin and rookie Kareem Jackson have been liabilities in pass coverage all season long.

Champ Bailey was the only other regular starting NFL corner to not allow a score. Quin also led the Texans with 11 pass breakups, and coaches believe "he can become a shutdown cornerback." Just don't expect quarterbacks to stop throwing at him. Quin didn't intercept a single pass all season.
