Nicolino (2-2) navigated his way around six hits and four walks to allow just two runs in six innings against Pittsburgh on Thursday. He struck out just one batter.
Nicolino was quite fortunate to avoid more damage, as his inability to miss bats (just 12 strikoeuts in 37 innings) combined with Thursday's uncharacteristic control problems could have led to a much greater disaster. That 12:11 K:BB is a harbinger of worse times to come for the rookie, who'll have a hard time keeping his ERA in its current league-average area if he can't find a way to start striking more hitters out.

Nicolino allowed just two runs with four strikeouts and one walk Saturday against the Phillies. He did not factor into the decision.
The left-hander was pulled with a one-run lead after allowing a solo home run with two outs in the eighth only to have the lead squandered by the Miami bullpen, costing him the win. Nicolino has now thrown two quality starts in three tries since being called up earlier this month and he will look to build on Saturday's performance in his next start Friday against the Pirates.

Nicolino moved to 2-1 with a quality start Monday against Milwaukee, as he allowed two runs on six hits and two walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out three.
Nicolino drew 12 ground balls from Brewers bats to keep any big innings from developing. He needed just 95 pitches for his 6.2 innings. He had just 63 strikeouts in 115 innings at Triple-A New Orleans, so it shouldn't be surprising Nicolino isn't racking up the strikeouts at the show, but he has just seven strikeouts in 23.1 innings thus far, a brutal 2.7 K/9.

Nicolino allowed four runs on nine hits and a walk over 5.2 innings, but received no decision Tuesday against Miami.
Nicolino held the Red Sox to two runs over five innings, but struggled in the sixth before being lifted for a reliever. Despite a 1.38 WHIP, the lefty should hold onto his spot in the rotation until Jose Fernandez returns from his biceps injury. He'll make his next start Sunday at St. Louis.

The Marlins recalled Nicolino from Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post reports.
Nicolino was called up to take both the roster spot and rotation opening caused by Jose Fernandez's strained biceps. Nicolino had one outstanding outing and one poor one in two starts with the Marlins earlier this season, and posted a 3.52 ERA in 20 starts with New Orleans this season. He will not provide much in the strikeout category, but he is one of the Marlins' top prospects, and will have a good chance to stick in the big league rotation the rest of the way.

Nicolino will be called up from Triple-A New Orleans to start Tuesday against the Red Sox, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
With Jose Fernandez (biceps) expected to land on the disabled list, Nicolino will get the opportunity to showcase his skills in Fernandez's rotation spot. The Marlins had been hoping to get a longer look at Nicolino after trading some of their rotation pieces prior to the deadline, so it's no surprise to see his name called prior to September call-ups. The 23-year-old owns a 3.52 ERA over 115 innings so far in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast league.

Nicolino will likely get an extended look over the last two months of the season, now that Dan Haren and Mat Latos have been traded away by the Marlins, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Nicolino isn't currently projected to start this week, but the Marlins still have some openings. Jose Urena has been called up already, and Brad Hand is Tuesday's projected starter.
Tue Jun 30 201515:15Nicolino optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday
Nicolino was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.
With Bryan Morris coming off the DL on Tuesday, Nicolino will head back to Triple-A after making a pair of starts for the Marlins. He won his first start, allowing just four hits and no earned runs over 7.0 innings, but he was knocked around in his second outing, scattering six hits and five earned runs over 4.0 innings.

Nicolino was knocked around for five runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two over four innings of a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers on Friday night.
Nicolino (1-1, 4.09 ERA) got his major league career off to a great start with seven shutout innings in his first outing, and was rewarded with another start, but his inability to miss many bats caught up with him here. Tom Koehler is expected back this weekend and Jared Cosart pitched four innings in relief in this game, so Nicolino's rotation spot in Miami is likely in jeopardy.
Wed Jun 24 201516:45Nicolino scheduled to start Friday against Dodgers
Nicolino is scheduled to start Friday against the Dodgers, Christina De Nicola of FOX Sports Florida reports.
Tom Koehler (neck) is set to return this weekend, but Nicolino will get another opportunity with Jarred Cosart (head) ticketed for the bullpen initially upon activation from the DL. Jose Urena may very well have pitched his way out of the rotation, but Nicolino, who tossed seven scoreless innings against Cincinnati in his debut, still seems like the likely candidate to lose his spot once Jose Fernandez (elbow) makes it back early next month.
Tue Jun 23 201523:06Nicolino will make another start with Marlins
Nicolino will make another start with the Marlins, according to manager Dan Jennings, the Associated Press reports.
This likely suggests that Tom Koehler (neck stiffness) is not healthy enough to rejoin the rotation, although with Monday's off day, the Marlins can afford to get creative with when they opt to deploy Nicolino next. Those who picked him up for Saturday's start will want to hang onto him in the short term now that it is clear he will make at least one more start.

Nicolino made his major league debut and shined, tossing seven shutout innings with four hits allowed and two strikeouts.
While it was a nice debut for Nicolino, the paltry amount of strikeouts indicate his ceiling is pretty limited. He's averaging just 5.2 K/9 at Triple-A in 2015 and was even worse in 2014, with 4.3 in Double-A. His ERA was under three in both of those years, so he found a way to deal with it, but it's tough to see him doing the same in the big leagues. Tom Koehler's health outlook will decide if Nicolino makes another start.
Sat Jun 20 201516:01Nicolino recalled and will start Saturday against Reds
Nicolino was recalled and will start Saturday against the Reds.
A neck injury has sidelined Tom Koehler and opened the door for Nicolino to make his major league debut. He will oppose Anthony DeSclafani after posting a 2.87 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 45:21 K:BB in 13 starts (78.1 innings) for Triple-A New Orleans to start the year, though it's possible this could just be a spot start if Koehler makes a quick turnaround.
Sat Jun 20 201514:56Justin Nicolino: Will Start Saturday
Nicolino will start Saturday against the Reds, Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald reports.
With Tom Koehler reportedly dealing with some neck and back pain, the Marlins will call upon Nicolino to make his major league debut in Cincinnati. The 23-year-old Nicolino has posted a 2.87 ERA in 13 starts for Triple-A New Orleans this season despite a 1.35 WHIP and a modest 5.2 K/9.
Sun May 24 201512:29Nicolino could be in mix join Miami's rotation this week
Nicolino could be in the mix join Miami's rotation this week, the Miami Herald reports.
With injuries to Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) and Mat Latos (knee) the Marlins will need to find a starter for Tuesday. Nicolino, one of Miami's top pitching prospects, has put together a 2.15 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 54.1 innings (nine starts) for Triple-A New Orleans.
Tue Mar 17 201510:51Nicolino optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday
Nicolino was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday, Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
It was an expected move as the 24-year-old left-hander continues to methodically make his way through the Marlins' system. Nicolino appeared in just one Grapefruit League game this spring, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts over two innings. He posted a strong 2.85 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in Double-A Jacksonville last season and if Nicolino is able to repeat that success in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, he's got a strong shot to see time with the big club later this season.
Wed Mar 4 201514:00Nicolino projected to begin season at Triple-A New Orleans
Nicolino is projected to begin the season at Triple-A New Orleans, MLB.com reports.
Nicolino struck out two but was tagged with a two-run home run in his spring debut against the University of Miami on Tuesday. The 23-year-old put up an impressive 2.85 ERA and 1.07 WHIP over 28 starts at Double-A last season but the Marlins' front office is being very deliberate with their plans to bring Nicolino along slowly. If he continues to excel against minor league competition, Nicolino could earn a look as a bullpen piece in the second half this season with a legit shot to be a factor in the teams' 2016 plans.
