After attending Texans camp, The Sideline View's John Harris is "not buying" FS Ed Reed (hip surgery) will be ready for Week 1.

Harris noticed Reed "wince" doing backpedal-and-turn drills on a side field, and says he "didn't look comfortable doing anything other than running straight ahead." Harris no longer even believes the Texans' goal is to have Reed back for Opening Day. They may consider anything Reed offers in 2013 a bonus.

This was an expected move. Reed is recovering from late-April hip surgery, and he may not practice much at all this summer or play in any preseason games. The goal for the Texans is to have the soon-to-be 35-year-old ready for Week 1.

Texans GM Rick Smith is optimistic Ed Reed (hip surgery) will be ready for Week 1.

"(Reed's) rehab is going well," Smith told NFL.com. "The thing that is important, and we're focused on, is to make sure he's there Week 1 when we start playing for real." Reed has refused to guarantee he'll be ready for the regular season, but it's a good sign that Smith is willing to publicly express optimism. Reed is unlikely to take the field in the preseason, but can tentatively be counted on for Week 1.

"It's going well right now," Reed said. "There's really no timeline. We're just gonna keep on grinding and keep on working and shoot for September." "But as you've known me for the longest time, I'm going to be smart about my injuries and make sure I'm there for the later part of the season when the team really needs me." Reed has gone from being ready for the start of camp, to potentially returning "midway through it" to not a guarantee for Week 1. Reed could still easily end up being ready for Week 1, but it's safe to say he would have never gotten his three-year, $15 million deal had the Texans known the true extent of his injury.

Reed will not practice with the team at minicamp, and he is still expected to be out until training camp. He'll just be back so that the team can keep a closer eye on his recovery. Reed is currently rehabbing in Atlanta.

Owner Bob McNair first let slip that Reed might not be ready for the beginning of camp after coach Gary Kubiak had previously insisted he would. Things have a history of not quite going to plan with Reed and his injuries, so we'd be far from surprised if he misses a sizable chunk of his first Texans camp. Going on 35, there's a chance Reed is damaged goods.

Profootballtalk reports the Ravens "generally knew" Ed Reed's hip was an issue, and that the Texans "apparently didn't."

Reed's issue (torn labrum) apparently couldn't have been detected by a physical or X-ray. That means there's a very real chance he made no mention of his injury to the Texans until after he signed on the dotted line. If that's the case, it's a transgression that would put a lesser player in hot water with his new team. For now, it doesn't appear the Texans will try to recoup any of the $6 million guaranteed they owe Reed.

It's possible Reed knew he'd need the operation all along, but kept it under wraps and delayed the procedure to buoy his free-agent stock. There were reports in Baltimore immediately after the Texans signed Reed that the Ravens never wanted him back. "Anytime a guy's operated on, you're concerned, especially at this time of year," said Phillips. "If it'd been right after the season, it'd been different. So there's a little concern. But the good thing about (Reed), he's experienced it before. He's an experienced guy."

Coach Gary Kubiak acknowledged Monday that the Texans did not expect FS Ed Reed to need hip surgery when they signed him in March.

On March 20, the Texans signed Ahman Green Reed to a three-year, $15 million deal with $6 million guaranteed. "We didn't expect it, but it started bothering him," said Kubiak. "That's when we got aggressive in what we needed to do." It's believed owner Bob McNair was the driving force behind the Texans' pursuit of Reed after the club lost Glover Quin and Connor Barwin in free agency. McNair conceded Monday that Reed may not be ready for training camp.

The Texans had been insisting Reed would be ready for the beginning of camp, but owners tend to let the cat out of the bag when they make public comments. McNair did imply he expects Reed to be ready when the Texans report, and that "the middle" is unlikely. Even though he'll be adjusting to a new team and scheme, the Texans have no reason to rush their new 34-year-old safety.

Reed will miss OTAs, but he's expected to be ready for training camp. The 34-year-old has missed just 16 games in his 11-year career. Second-round pick D.J. Swearinger will get valuable reps with the starters while Reed is out of commission.

Senior VP of Public and Community Relations Kevin Byrne insisted on the team website that the Ravens did in fact want Ed Reed back.

Earlier in the week, the Baltimore Sun reported that coach John Harbaugh wanted Reed back with the Ravens "as much as he wants a root canal." Byrne said the quote "in no way reflected John's feelings about the future Hall of Famer Reed." Regardless of the how the team feels about Reed, they were not willing to offer him the three-year, $15 million deal he got in Houston.

In other words, he didn't want Reed back at all. The Sun's Mike Preston found it "interesting" that the national media made it seem like the Texans and Ravens were in a "bidding war" for Reed when Baltimore was never serious about re-signing him. On Monday's ESPN Football Today podcast, Scouts Inc.'s Matt Williamson suggested Reed and Michael Huff are similar players at this stage of their careers. Reed got a three-year, $15 million deal from Houston. The Ravens stole Huff for $6 million over three seasons.

Per NFL Network's Albert Breer, Reed will receive $6 million in the first season. The Texans now have Reed under control through his age-37 campaign, though it would be somewhat surprising if he finished the deal. The $5 million annual average leaves Reed outside the league's top-ten most highly paid safeties.

Terms have yet to be announced, but CBS' Jason La Canfora "wouldn't be surprised at all" if Reed gets close to $6 million per season. If that's the case, he'll be one of the lone free agents to actually get near what he was asking for this offseason. Reed is an ideal replacement for Glover Quin, and adds an edge to a defense that let itself get pushed around down the stretch last season. Along with Chicago's Brian Urlacher, Reed is the second defensive icon to move on from the only team he's ever known in the past hour.

Per reporter Ian Rapoport, the "belief" is that Reed is now seeking $4 million per year, but that it's "doubtful" the Ravens meet that price. $4 million is believed to be what the Texans are offering, so it could be only a matter of time before Reeds stops peddling his wares and takes his talents his Houston.

League sources tell the Baltimore Sun the Texans' offer to free agent Ed Reed was for roughly three years and $4 million annually, but that Reed is angling for closer to the $7.2 million he made last season.

Reed could be on the market for a while if he sticks to his guns, as the money simply isn't there league-wide. The cap-strapped Ravens could have trouble even matching $4 million. Reed has presumably been waiting for other suitors to emerge since he left Houston without a deal, but they've yet to come forward. His choices are likely down to Houston and Baltimore.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says he's "very hopeful" of re-signing free agent Ed Reed.

"On the hopeful scale I'd say it's of high hope," Harbaugh said Tuesday. "We'll just have to see how it works out." Reed is back to shopping his services after the Texans reportedly only offered him $4 million per season. He's believed to be seeking $6-$7 million. He won't get that from Baltimore, but if all the offers are low-ball, it stands to reason Reed will decide to re-up with the only team he's ever known.

Coach Gary Kubiak says the Texans are still "very much involved" with free agent Ed Reed.

"He'll take his time to do the right thing," Kubiak said. "No panic from any standpoint." Talks have stalled because the Texans made Reed a low-ball offer. He's now holding out for a better deal, and trying to keep the Ravens involved in the talks to increase his leverage. It's unclear who might blink first. We wouldn't rule out Reed returning to Baltimore if he can't get the Texans to sweeten their offer.
