Tue Mar 19 201308:22Texans' offer to Ed Reed comes in low
A league source tells the Baltimore Sun that the Texans' initial offer to free agent S Ed Reed came in low enough that a fast deal was unrealistic.
The Texans wined and dined Reed with a private plane and other trimmings, but didn't open up their wallets. It's now been more than three days since he visiting Houston and talks are merely considered "ongoing." Reed's agent is keeping the Ravens involved in discussions as well as he tries to maintain leverage. The problem is that Reed's sideline-to-sideline speed to waning at age 34.

Sun Mar 17 201310:53Ed Reed to have a deal by end of this week?
Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome said he anticipates free agent Ed Reed's status to be finalized this week.
Whether Reed will be back in Baltimore, with the Texans, or some other mystery team remains to be seen. Reed completed his two-day visit with the Texans on Friday, but he left town without a deal. It's expected that he's taking whatever offer he received back to Baltimore and giving Newsome the opportunity to match it.

Fri Mar 15 201315:29Ravens jump back into Ed Reed bidding
USA Today's Mike Garafolo reports the Ravens are "getting involved in talks" with free agent Ed Reed after he left Houston without a deal.
The Texans made Reed a contract offer, and it sounds like he's bringing it back to Baltimore for a chance to match. Reed has spent his entire 11-year career with the Ravens. Per Garafolo, "they won't let him walk without a fight."

Fri Mar 15 201314:47Ed Reed not on the verge of deal with Texans
NFL Network reports free agent Ed Reed has left the Texans' facility without a deal, and that there's "nothing expected" Friday.
The Baltimore Sun reports interest between the sides "remains heavy," but that Reed could "shop the deal around." A source termed the talks as "all positive," and expects a deal to "eventually" get done. Nothing is ever over until it's over with Reed, but Houston remains the favorite to pry him away from the Ravens.

Fri Mar 15 201310:36Ed Reed continues visit with Texans Friday
Free agent S Ed Reed remains in Houston on a visit with the Texans Friday.
Reed has been meeting with Texans officials since early Thursday. Per beat writer John McClain, the two sides were "close" to getting a deal done Thursday night. It sounds like only contract details need to be haggled out, but ESPN's Adam Schefter isn't so sure this one is in the bag. Early Friday morning, he said the chances of Reed officially joining the Texans is "50-50 at best."

Fri Mar 15 201307:43Report: Ed Reed no lock to sign with Texans
A source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter it's "50-50 at best" that free agent S Ed Reed sign with the Texans.
It's rare that owners send their private jet for a player, woo him and then lose out. Reed is a rare player. Schefter now says a return to Ravens remains possible, which would make some sense after Bernard Pollard was axed Wednesday. The 49ers and Colts "loom as longshots."

Thu Mar 14 201319:51'Every sign' pointing toward Reed in Houston
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, "every sign" points toward free agent Ed Reed signing with the Texans on Friday.
It's been the budding consensus all day. Reed would be a strong replacement for Glover Quin, and add some edge to a defense that seemed to be lacking it at times in 2012. Reed is surely angling for some guaranteed money beyond 2013, but could have a hard time getting it.

Thu Mar 14 201311:21Texans enlist private plane for Ed Reed
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on SportsCenter that owner Bob McNair and Texans officials picked up Ed Reed in McNair's private plane before Thursday's free-agent visit.
Typically when private planes are involved, teams get their man. We saw it once already with the Bucs and Dashon Goldson. The Texans have made the playoffs in back-to-back years, have a safety need, and just enough money for one free-agent splash. They'd play Reed at free safety, with Danieal Manning moving to strong.

Wed Mar 13 201317:52Ed Reed visiting the Texans on Thursday
Free agent Ed Reed will visit the Texans on Thursday.
Reed's former teammate - and former Texan - Derrick Mason hinted on Wednesday there was a "surprise team" in the mix for the future Hall-of-Famer. It's apparently Houston, who is searching for a replacement for Glover Quin. The Texans will be Reed's first visit, meaning they'll be the first team to get the chance to convince him not to leave town.

Wed Mar 13 201314:08Ravens don't want to re-sign Ed Reed?
PFT's Mike Florio is "getting the sense" the Ravens don't want to re-sign free agent Ed Reed.
The Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday morning the Ravens were "definitely not out of the picture" for one of their franchise cornerstones, but they're apparently getting ready to move on. It's what they're doing at seemingly every other position on defense. The loss of Reed would mean the Ravens need two need safeties after cutting Bernard Pollard. The Ravens are gutting the core of their team like few other recent SB champs.

Wed Mar 13 201312:32Ravens not out of running for Ed Reed
The Baltimore Sun reports the Ravens are "definitely not out of the picture" for the Ravens.
The 49ers showed initial interest in Reed, but a more recent report deemed it a "smokescreen," and neither the Colts nor Patriots seem to be aggressively pursuing him. The Ravens have some cap room after the Dolphins overpaid Dannell Ellerbe, and cutting Bernard Pollard. They are positioned to afford Reed.

Tue Mar 12 201314:47Report: Reed to SF most likely not happening
A source tells Profootballtalk rumors that free agent Ed Reed is drawing interest from the 49ers are "a smokescreen aimed at creating interest," and that it's "most likely not happening."
Welcome to free agency. Reed would be a perfectly logical fit for the 49ers, but may not fit their budget after they took on Anquan Boldin's $6 million salary Monday. We expect Reed to draw immediate interest from the Patriots and Colts. It's not a given that he's done in Baltimore, but likely.

Tue Mar 12 201309:26Losing Goldson, 49ers may target FS Ed Reed
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports "some around the league" expect the 49ers to make a push for free agent Ed Reed.
Profootballtalk alluded to the same thing on Monday. The 49ers anticipate losing Dashon Goldson, and Reed would be an elderly if still effective fallback plan. After trading for Anquan Boldin, San Francisco could wind up swiping two veterans from the team they were defeated by in Super Bowl 47. Reed is going on age 35. He intercepted five passes and broke up 17 in 20 games last season.

Free agent Ed Reed has hired an agent.
Reed isn't planning to self-negotiate a sweetheart deal with the Ravens. Per CBS' Jason La Canfora, there's a "good chance he moves on." Indianapolis and New England are the future Hall-of-Famer's most likely suitors.

Sat Mar 9 201318:24Ravens to offer incentive-laden deal to Reed
The Baltimore Sun says the Ravens are likely to offer free agents Ed Reed and OT Bryant McKinnie incentive-laden contracts.
Baltimore wants both players back, but Reed is getting up there in years and McKinnie has always struggled with his weight. Beat writer Mike Preston believes the Colts are the team that has Reed high on its list because of his relationship with coach Chuck Pagano. McKinnie, 34 in September, likely won't have a major market if he reaches it on Tuesday.

Wed Mar 6 201315:11Ed Reed still doesn't have an agent
Free agent Ed Reed has yet to hire an agent.
It means Reed won't benefit from the league's three-day "legal tampering" period, as teams are only allowed to negotiate with players' agents, not the players themselves. Perhaps Reed can find a way around it via a "business advisor" or something similar. The three-day blackout isn't going to affect the veteran safety's market, which will be strong.

Wed Feb 27 201310:32Ed Reed hasn't talked to Ravens yet
Free agent Ed Reed has not spoken to the Ravens about a new contract yet.
Reed has to get in line behind fellow free agents Joe Flacco and Dannell Ellerbe. He's also in the process of hiring an agent after representing himself for the past few seasons. If the Ravens let Reed get to the open market, the Patriots and Colts are expected to come calling.

Tue Feb 26 201316:21Pats planning annual $5 million for Ed Reed?
"League sources" believe the Patriots will try to lure free agent Ed Reed with a deal worth $5 million per season.
It's the first semi-concrete report we've heard connecting Reed to his long-time admirer Bill Belichick. All indications are that the Ravens will make a concerted effort to retain the future Hall-of-Famer, but their salary-cap situation could prevent them from offering $5 million per season. Indianapolis and New England will be Reed's two most likely landing spots if he leaves the only team he's ever known.

Thu Feb 7 201315:44Ravens GM optimistic about Ed Reed
GM Ozzie Newsome is optimistic the Ravens will re-sign free agent Ed Reed.
"I think he realizes there may be some other options out there, but I think if you watched him, if you watched his body language over the course of the last eight to 10 days that he loves being here in Baltimore," Newsome said Thursday. "And I think we can use that to help make that relationship last a little bit longer." Newsome hinted the franchise tag will not be an option for Reed, meaning any deal would likely be a 2-3 year pact. There's a real chance Reed leaves, but it's far from a certainty.
