Edwards is one of the candidates to start in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. |
Manager Joe Maddon has called for Sunday as a "staff day," with Edwards, Travis Wood, Trevor Cahill, and Clayton Richard all possibilities to pitch in the second game of the doubleheader. Dan Haren will start the opener. |

Edwards was recalled by the Cubs on Monday. |
Edwards has spent 2015 in the minors while most recently making 23 appearances at Triple-A Iowa. During those 31.2 innings, the 24-year-old accrued an ERA of 2.84 while striking out 39 batters compared to the 24 he walked. |

Edwards pitched a scoreless inning for Triple-A Iowa on Friday. |
Edwards hasn't taken to his new role as a reliever all that well, but at least that's two scoreless appearances in a row. In five innings with Iowa, he's given up three runs, three hits, and has walked five. On the plus side, he's fanned six. If he can get his walks down, he may find himself in the Chicago bullpen before the year is out. |

Edwards was promoted to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, MiLB.com reports. |
The Cubs converted Edwards to a bullpen role at Double-A Tennessee to begin the year, a decision that hurts his value in dynasty formats but will speed up his arrival to the majors. Over 23.2 innings in the Southern League, Edwards posted a 2.66 ERA and 36 strikeouts while nailing down 4-of-5 save chances. He profiles as a dominant back-end relief arm once he fits the big leagues, but he'll need to trim his walks (17 at Tennessee) in order to reach his full potential. |

Edwards pitched two scoreless and hitless innings of relief for Double-A Tennessee on Saturday. |
It was easily the best of Edwards' four appearances this year, as he's off to a rough start. In 7.2 innings, he's given up seven runs (three earned) and has walked eight. On the plus side, he has 10 strikeouts. He's still one of the better pitching prospects in the Cubs' system, so don't give up on him just yet. |

Edwards will start the season working out of the bullpen at Double-A Tennessee, the ESPN Chicago's Mark Gonzales reports. |
The Cubs liked what they saw from Edwards in short stints this spring, and this gives them the flexibility to use him how they see fit later in the season. It's possible that he could move quickly to the big league level in 2015 an work out of the bullpen in Chicago. While Edwards is considered the Cubs' top pitching prospect in some circles, his skinny frame and injury history suggest he may be better served working as a reliever long term, so this should not come as a surprise. |
Thu Mar 19 2015 | 14:50 | Edwards optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday |
Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. |
Back in November, the Cubs selected Edwards' contract, adding him to their 40-man roster in order to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Tall and lanky at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds, Edwards reported to major league camp and fared well in his two Cactus League appearances, allowing just two hits with no walks while striking out two over three scoreless frames. He's still just 23 and has only 48 innings above High-A under his belt, but a late-season audition is by no means out of the question for Edwards. |

Edwards pitched two scoreless innings against the Dodgers on Wednesday. |
Edwards has only appeared in two games this spring, but he didn't walk a batter in either game, and he hasn't yet given up a run either. Though he's probably not in the running for a rotation job this year, a good season should put him in the conversation next March. |

Edwards (finger) threw a bullpen session Saturday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. |
Any concern regarding the health of Edwards' finger, which was seen bandaged up Friday night, was dispelled with the right-hander completing the mound session. Apparently, it's just a minor issue with his fingernail. Manager Joe Maddon recommended a manicurist for the youngster. |
