Mon Dec 6 201015:0249ers noncommittal on Week 14 quarterback
49ers coach Mike Singletary was noncommittal in regards to his starting quarterback for Week 14 against the Seahawks.
Troy Smith managed 10 completions in Sunday's loss to the Packers. He's undoubtedly a better option than Alex Smith, but Singletary may believe that Troy plays best when he keeps the pressure on. The 49ers could give Alex more first-team reps on Wednesday, but it would be a shock if Troy didn't start.

Tue Nov 30 201001:03Troy Smith makes just one mistake in win
Troy Smith completed 11-of-23 passes for 129 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the team's Week 12 win over Arizona.
It's Smith's third win in four starts, and it's becoming evident that he's a much better player on the field than he is in fantasy. His lone interception came off the fingertips of Michael Crabtree while his touchdown came on a 38-yard strike that Crabtree was able to corral. He's earned himself yet another start for the team, but you would be hard pressed to put him in your fantasy lineup.
Fri Nov 26 201013:40Troy Smith heads into make-or-break game
Coach Mike Singletary made it clear this week that he won't hesitate to go back to Alex Smith if Troy Smith
"If Troy is the guy that is helping us win, then he's going to play," Singletary said. "If he is not, then somebody else is going to play." With Alex fully recovered from his shoulder injury, Troy is a risking fantasy play with the chance of getting pulled in-game at Arizona.

Tue Nov 16 201013:32Troy Smith sets 49ers record in Week 10
Against in the 49ers' Week 10 victory over the Rams, Troy Smith became the first quarterback in franchise history to connect with five different receivers on pass plays over 60 yards.
Smith's 356 yards were the most by a 49ers QB since 2004, and his 12.7 yards per attempt was the highest average since Steve Young's 14.0 in 1997. New play-caller Mike Johnson deserves some credit here, but it's Troy's willingness to improvise in the pocket and take chances down the field that sets him apart from Alex Smith.

Mon Nov 15 201014:53Troy Smith keeps 49ers' starting QB job
Coach Mike Singletary confirmed Monday that Troy Smith will remain the 49ers' starting quarterback in Week 11.
The Niners play the Bucs next. Alex Smith (shoulder) might be healthy enough to back up Troy Smith, but the former Heisman winner has clearly earned the full-time starting job with back-to-back victories over the Broncos and Rams. Barring a multi-game flop by Troy, we shouldn't see Alex again this year.

Sun Nov 14 201023:07Singletary still not committing to Troy Smith
49ers coach Mike Singletary refused to commit to Troy Smith as his starting quarterback following Sunday's win over the Rams.
"We're just going to enjoy this win and before I get into who's the starting quarterback," said Mangini Singletary. "We'll sit down as a staff and talk about what we need to talk about." Smith has led back-to-back wins, and threw for a turnover-less 356 yards against St. Louis. Beat writer Matt Maiocco expects Smith to keep the job "for the foreseeable future."

Sun Nov 14 201020:13Troy Smith's 356 yards leads 49ers to OT win
Troy Smith completed 17-of-28 passes for 356 yards and a touchdown in the 23-20 Week 10 overtime win over the Rams.
He could have had another touchdown, but it was called back due to penalty. The Niners weren't afraid to take shots deep with Smith, which led to a whopping 12.7 yards per attempt. He showed off a surprisingly strong arm and avoided a handful of sacks with his escapability. Smith isn't terribly accurate and the yards-per-attempt number was an obvious anomaly, but there's no doubt that he's earned the starting job for the remainder of the season.
Fri Nov 12 201016:00Troy Smith confirmed as 49ers Week 10 starter
Coach Mike Singletary finally announced Friday that Troy Smith would be the 49ers' starting quarterback in Week 10.
We already knew it, even if it took Singletary several days to admit. The Niners are running a ball-control offense with Smith at the helm. Ideally, they won't plan for him to try more than 20-25 passes against St. Louis.

Thu Nov 11 201018:55Troy Smith taking all of the first-team reps
Though head coach Mike Singletary won't make the decision official, coordinator Mike Johnson revealed that his game-plan is geared toward Troy Smith starting this week.
Troy and Alex Smith are "two different types of quarterback and they require two different types of thought," Johnson said. Troy is definitely the starter, and Alex (shoulder) is unlikely to dress this week. Troy handled all of the first-team reps in Thursday's practice.

Wed Nov 10 201013:51Troy Smith will start against the Rams
49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed Wednesday that Troy Smith will "likely" start in Week 10 against the Rams.
Alex Smith (shoulder) has not been cleared to practice or play in games. The job is Troy Smith's -- whether Singletary "confirms" it or not -- so these posts are growing monotonous. Alex Smith isn't going to play on Sunday, and when he gets healthy is unlikely to regain his spot atop the depth chart.

Tue Nov 9 201011:48Singletary not committing to Troy Smith yet
49ers coach Mike Singletary said in a radio interview Tuesday that he hasn't settled on a starting quarterback for Week 10.
"Sometime before the game we'll know who the starter is going to be," Singletary said. The starter is going to be Troy Smith, as this is just posturing from the coach. Smith "led" the Niners to a win in their last game but wasn't particularly impressive. Alex Smith (shoulder) is expected to be the emergency quarterback in Week 10.

Mon Nov 8 201017:10Troy Smith expected to start Week 10
Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area confirms that "all indications" point to Troy Smith starting the 49ers' Week 10 game.
Alex Smith (shoulder) was given the green light Monday to "ramp up" his rehabilitation, but is expected to be San Francisco's No. 3/emergency quarterback against St. Louis. Troy Smith is likely to keep the job as long as he keeps winning. The 49ers hope that Troy won't be just "a one-game guy."

Mon Nov 8 201016:00Troy Smith doesn't know if he'll start
Troy Smith indicated Monday that he doesn't know whether he'll be the 49ers' Week 10 starter against the Rams.
Alex Smith (shoulder) hasn't been informed, either. Troy Smith is expected to get the nod, especially since Smith isn't believed to be 100 percent yet. Coach Mike Singletary is likely to announce a starter by Wednesday.

Sun Oct 31 201016:20Troy Smith leads Niners to their second win
Troy Smith completed 12-of-19 passes for 196 yards with one touchdown and added a one-yard touchdown run in Sunday's 24-16 win over the Broncos in London.
Smith managed the game, but didn't play as well as his numbers looked. His longest completion came when he threw up a jump ball up for grabs that Delanie Walker somehow came down with. Other than that, Smith just threw short slants and handed the ball off. The former Heisman Trophy winner has certainly earned another start when the Niners come out of their bye, but we wouldn't add Smith.
Wed Oct 27 201013:31Troy Smith seeing precious few reps
49ers Week 8 starting quarterback Troy Smith's only practice reps have come with the scout team so far this season.
He's been used only to give the 49ers' defense "a look" on the practice field, running the opposition's offense. Playcaller Mike Johnson can't possibly have much confidence in the former Raven. Expect a decidedly run-first game plan against the Broncos at Wembley Stadium Sunday. Frank Gore should get a ton of work, but Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis take fantaasy hits.

Wed Oct 27 201008:1749ers name Troy Smith starter for Week 8
49ers coach Mike Singletary has named Troy Smith his starter for Week 8.
Alex Smith is expected to miss 2-3 weeks, and David Carr struggled to move the offense last week, so the Niners are going with Smith even though he's yet to take a snap with the first-team offense in practice. We certainly don't believe in Carr (or Alex Smith), but this is a strange decision indeed. Singletary said Nate Davis will not be activated from the practice squad, so they'll go with two quarterbacks this weekend.

Sun Oct 24 201012:0749ers declare Week 7 inactives
49ers declared QB Troy Smith, WR Kyle Williams, S Chris Maragos, C Eric Heitmann, OL Alex Boone, LB Keaton Kristick, OL Barry Sims, and WR Jason Hill inactive for Week 7 at Carolina.
If Alex Smith finally gets pulled in-game, it will be No. 2 quarterback David Carr taking over.
