Mon Sep 6 201020:4549ers sign ex-Raven Troy Smith
49ers agreed to terms with QB Troy Smith on a one-year deal.
Smith will have a hard time beating out backup David Carr, but he's a much better No. 3 than recently cut Nate Davis. It's a nice signing for the team, but they're hoping that the former Ohio State star never has to see the field.

Fri Sep 3 201011:45Troy Smith could miss Saturday's cut
The Baltimore Sun confirms that Ravens No. 3 quarterback Troy Smith's roster spot is "definitely in jeopardy."
Smith threw two picks and completed under 50% of his passes against a weak Rams defense in Thursday night's preseason finale. The Ravens would trade Smith in a "best case scenario," but otherwise he may be waived Saturday.

Fri Sep 3 201000:35Troy Smith struggles in preseason finale
Troy Smith finished 15-of-34 for 196 yards and two interceptions against the Rams in Thursday's preseason finale.
If the Ravens were showcasing Smith for a trade, they'll want to hide this week's game tape. Smith finished the game with a 38.4 passer rating, showing questionable judgment and accuracy while having several passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. He won't threaten Marc Bulger for the No. 2 job.

Wed Sep 1 201015:03Troy Smith to play all of preaseason finale
Third-string QB Troy Smith will start the Ravens' preseason finale Thursday night, and play all four quarters.
This could mean a couple of things. It may be Smith's final audition to show the Ravens he's worth keeping on as a third-stringer, and could also be a trade-showcasing attempt. Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome is always open to trading, and is aware that multiple teams around the league are shaky at quarterback. Marc Bulger is entrenched as the top backup behind Joe Flacco.

Wed Aug 4 201015:31Troy Smith hasn't looked good in camp
Ravens No. 3 QB Troy Smith reportedly "hasn't looked good in training camp."
Smith fell to third on the depth chart with the Marc Bulger signing, and doesn't appear to be handling it well. The Baltimore Sun's Mike Preston suggests a "lights out" preseason could improve Smith's stock on the trade market.

Tue Jul 13 201009:56Eagles deny interest in Michael Vick
An Eagles source denies that the team has interest in Troy Smith as a fall-back backup solution should Michael Vick be released.
The Eagles are denying just about every report they're involved with these days, so take this with a grain of salt. While Smith has never played in a West Coast offense like what Philadelphia runs, his skills would fit an Andy Reid-style scheme better than Cam Cameron's. Smith is also on the trade block.

Wed Jul 7 201015:11Report: Eagles eyeing Smith as fallback plan
The Eagles are reportedly interested in Troy Smith is a fallback option if they're forced to release Michael Vick this summer.
The Eagles still don't seem likely to dump Vick, but they're covering their bases in case further details emerge in the Quanis Phillips shooting. If the Smith report is true, the team appears to have moved on from free agent Jeff Garcia as a possible alternative to Vick.

Wed Jun 23 201020:27Troy Smith could go on the trading block
Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times believes Troy Smith will go on the trade block following the Ravens' addition of Marc Bulger.
Wilson believes Smith might command "a later-round pick," and even that may be a bit bold. Smith has not had the best attitude since the Ravens drafted him in 2007, and is one of the shortest quarterbacks in the league. Ultimately, it might be best for all parties if Baltimore released him outright.

Wed May 26 201010:17Smith and Beck to compete
Ravens coach John Harbaugh declared an open competition between Troy Smith and John Beck for the backup quarterback job.
Smith beat out Beck last season and likely has the edge coming into this year as well. Even though Smith tried to force his way out of town via trade, he's the better option should anything happen to Joe Flacco.

Tue May 25 201016:52Smith returns to OTAs after tonsil removal
Ravens QB Troy Smith returned to OTAs Tuesday, one week after having his tonsils removed.
Smith missed five games in 2008 due to tonsillitis and came down with strep throat this offseason. He finally got fed up with the issue last week, had the tonsils surgically removed, and is feeling better now. "Oh my god, it's tremendous," Smith said. "It's like night and day. That was huge."

Wed May 19 201008:49Smith gets his tonsils out
Troy Smith had his tonsils removed and is not participating in this week's OTA.
Smith, who finally backed off his trade requests last week, should be able to resume working out in a couple weeks. John Beck moves up to the No. 2 job with Smith enjoying ice cream in bed.

Mon May 10 201011:24Smith talks about his trade demands
Troy Smith backed off his trade requests at Ravens minicamp, saying "My time will come. I love it here."
Perhaps Smith has finally seen the truth -- he's not going to garner interest around the league as a starting quarterback. He'll be best served to play out his one-year tender with a good attitude as Joe Flacco's backup and then hunt for a team that will give him a chance to compete.

Tue Apr 27 201008:24Troy Smith generates no interest
Ravens QB Troy Smith reportedly generated no interest on the trade market during the NFL Draft.
Smith's lack of ideal size (6'0/215) is probably the biggest thing holding him back; he does have a solid arm and athleticism. The former Heisman Trophy winner now appears certain to stay in Baltimore, backing up Joe Flacco.

Sun Apr 18 201000:41Ravens re-sign Troy Smith
Ravens re-signed restricted free agent QB Troy Smith to a one-year, $1.101 million contract.
Smith, entering his age-26 season, has appeared in 14 career games with two starts, posting a 53.9 completion rate with three touchdown passes and an interception. He is also used as a quarterback in some Wildcat packages. The former Heisman winner wants a chance to start elsewhere, and may be hoping that signing the tender will lead to a trade over draft weekend.
