Tue Feb 19 201317:35Chiefs release veterans Breaston and Boss
Chiefs released WR Steve Breaston.
The Chiefs also released TE Kevin Boss. Signed to a five-year, $22.55 million deal after the lockout, Breaston posted a 61/785/2 line in 2011 before mysteriously landing in former coach Romeo Crennel's doghouse last season. Breaston was a healthy scratch six times down the stretch, and caught just seven passes in 10 games. That, coupled with the fact that he'll turn 30 in August should limit Breaston's market, but he'll still get a chance to latch on somewhere in camp provided he's healthy. Breaston's previously troublesome right knee wasn't an issue during his two seasons in Kansas City.

Fri Feb 8 201320:28Steve Breaston 'energized' by Andy Reid hire
Chiefs WR Steve Breaston believes he'll be "energized" by Kansas City's head coaching change.
"I feel good about (Andy Reid) being here," said Breaston, who couldn't get on the field under Romeo Crennel. "My big thing is to just show him my work. I feel like there's a clean slate." Reid specifically pointed to Breaston as a slot receiver candidate, where he was "always dynamite" against his Eagles teams. Reid's slot receiver in Philadelphia was oft-used Jason Avant.

Mon Dec 17 201212:17Breaston not sure why he's been inactive
Steve Breaston doesn't know why he's landed in coach Romeo Crennel's doghouse.
Even with Dwayne Bowe (ribs) out for the season, Breaston was a healthy scratch for Sunday's loss to the Raiders, a game in which the Chiefs "generated" 136 yards through the air. "I'm still not sure why I'm not playing," Breaston said. "I'm past all that now. It just is what it is. There are other things for this team to worry about." In just the second season of a five-year contract, Breaston's release would normally be assured, but perhaps a new coaching staff will decide they could use his experience. Regardless of where Breaston plays in 2013, he won't be on the fantasy radar.

Sun Dec 16 201214:58Chiefs declare Week 15 inactives
Chiefs declared WR Steve Breaston, QB Ricky Stanzi, S Abram Elam, RB Cyrus Gray, FB Nate Eachus, OG Russ Hochstein, and DL Jerrell Powe inactive for Week 15 at Oakland.
Coach Romeo Crennell upbraided reporters late in the week for misconstruing his words when he said Breaston has been inactive because he needs a better understanding of the game plan. Breaston remains persona non grata even with Dwayne Bowe out for the season. Jon Baldwin, Dexter McCluster, Terrence Coppper, and Jamar Newsome will vie for whatever scant production is available in the passing game.

Wed Dec 12 201219:45Breaston doesn't understand Chiefs offense?
Coach Romeo Crennel intimated Wednesday that Steve Breaston has been a healthy scratch for four of the Chiefs' past five games because he doesn't understand the offense.
It's a strange charge for a six-year veteran who caught 61 passes as recently as last season. Breaston, naturally, doesn't agree with Crennel's assessment. "Me?," Breaston replied when told of Crennel's comments. "They didn't tell me that. I wouldn't go as far to say I don't understand the offense. I just know that, personally, I do know the offense. ... I'm just trying to stay out of the way. I don't understand this, either." The Chiefs could use Breaston for Week 15 with Dwayne Bowe (ribs) out, but Crennel has given no indication he'll be active. Breaston is signed through 2015, but could be granted a change of scenery in the offseason.

Sun Nov 18 201218:00Steve Breaston gets back in action
Steve Breaston caught one pass for 13 yards in the Chiefs' Week 11 loss to the Bengals.
Breaston, who was a healthy scratch in Week 10, was active in this one thanks to Jon Baldwin's head injury. And even though Dwayne Bowe (neck) left early, Breaston managed just three targets. He appears to be behind Terrance Copper and Devon Wylie on the depth chart.

Wed Nov 14 201221:20Breaston benched in order to see younger guys
Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel said Steve Breaston was a healthy inactive on Monday night because he wanted to "get a younger player up to see what the younger player could do."
That "younger player" was fourth-round rookie Devon Wylie. He didn't register in the box score and played just six offensive snaps. "He's (Breaston) a veteran player, and some young guys might have a little more quickness and a little bit more speed, and if you as a coach want to take a look at that speed, you have to make a move," Crennel added. Breaston has just six catches for 61 yards in year two of a five-year, $22.55 million contract signed prior to 2011.

Sun Oct 28 201219:53Steve Breaston goes catch-less in Week 8
Chiefs WR Steve Breaston was held catch-less in Week 8.
Found wide open by Matt Cassel down the left sideline, Breaston committed a brutal third-quarter drop of a would-be long gain and wasn't heard from thereafter. Breaston lost his starting job to Jon Baldwin early in the season and is Kansas City's No. 4 receiver behind Dwayne Bowe, Baldwin, and Dexter McCluster.

Wed Sep 26 201218:18Steve Breaston has knee injury
Steve Breaston (knee) was held out of Chiefs practice Wednesday.
It's a new injury for Breaston, who played 50 snaps in Sunday's overtime win. Breaston hasn't been a factor through the Chiefs' first three games, notching just three catches for 32 yards. He's off the fantasy radar.

Wed Sep 5 201209:03Steve Breaston listed as Chiefs starter
Steve Breaston is listed as a starting wideout on the Chiefs' Week 1 depth chart.
Despite a buzzworthy preseason, Jon Baldwin is listed as Breaston's direct backup. The two figure to rotate plenty, capping any upside in this run-heavy offense. As the clear No. 2 man last season, Breaston compiled just 785 yards and two touchdowns in 16 games.

Sun Jan 29 201216:59Breaston due $1.3 million roster bonus
The Chiefs are scheduled to pay Steve Breaston a $1.3 million roster bonus this offseason.
The bonus will precede his $2.05M salary. Breaston finished the 2011 season with 61 catches for 785 yards and two touchdowns. His yards-per-reception average was a career low, and he showed limited playmaking ability. The Chiefs would take a cap hit to release Breaston, so the bonus will likely be paid. If Dwayne Bowe receives the franchise tag, however, Breaston's starting job may be opened to competition after top supporter Todd Haley was fired.

Sun Jan 1 201220:39Steve Breaston has one-catch day
Steve Breaston was limited to one catch for nine yards in Kansas City's Week 17 win over the Broncos.
A disappointing day for the Chiefs' No. 2 receiver, but not one that should cloud what was ultimately a successful bounce-back campaign after Breaston's 2010 was marred by a knee injury. Breaston made fewer than four catches just twice after Week 3, finishing his year with a 61/785/2 line. That, despite the fact that the Chiefs had three different quarterbacks start at least three games. Breaston should be a solid fantasy WR3 in 2012.

Sun Dec 18 201118:03Breaston totals 50 yards in Week 15
Steve Breaston caught four passes for 50 yards against the Packers in Week 15.
Breaston's six targets led the team, but his longest catch was just 16 yards. Even with Kyle Orton breathing life into the passing game, Breaston is only a WR3 option in deeper leagues against the Raiders in Week 16. He hasn't topped 50 yards in a month.

Sun Dec 11 201117:43Breaston has four-catch day in loss
Steve Breaston caught four passes for 44 yards in Kansas City's Week 14 loss to the Jets.
Breaston has now managed at least four catches for 40 yards in all four games Tyler Palko has started at quarterback. Hardly blockbuster, but better than Palko's play has suggested would be possible. Breaston shouldn't have a terribly difficult time getting open against Green Bay's 31st ranked pass defense in Week 15.

Sun Dec 4 201117:11Steve Breaston has another solid day
Steve Breaston caught five passes for 41 yards in Sunday's win over the Bears.
A typically solid afternoon for Breaston, who is averaging four catches for 53.4 yards with 75 percent of the season in the books. He's also managed to stay productive under unimpressive backup quarterback Tyler Palko, averaging five catches for 52.6 yards. He's a safe, if low upside, WR3.
