Mon May 3 201008:24Tomlin won't name a starter until July
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin indicated that he won't decide on a starting quarterback for Week 1 until some time during training camp.
Byron Leftwich ran with the starters at last weekend's minicamp, but Tomlin said that Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch will both get their opportunities. One of the reasons Leftwich got to work with the starters at minicamp is that he wasn't with the team in 2009. We still think Dixon will ultimately get the job while Ben Roethlisberger is suspended.

Fri Apr 30 201014:50Leftwich opens as Steelers' starting QB
Byron Leftwich was the starting quarterback as the Steelers opened mandatory minicamp on Friday.
With Ben Roethlisberger out for at least the first month of the season, Leftwich is battling Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch to start. Dixon's superior talent should ultimately win out, but he's got some ground to make up with Leftwich currently out in front. Batch's roster security is tenuous at best.

Wed Apr 21 201014:12Steelers extend backup QB Leftwich
Steelers signed QB Byron Leftwich to a one-year extension through 2011.
Leftwich was previously under control only through 2010 at a base salary of $2 million. Financial terms of the new deal are undisclosed. Leftwich, 30, will most likely wind up competing with Charlie Batch to be Dennis Dixon's backup during Ben Roethlisberger's 4-6 game suspension. Dixon has two years in the system, and showed starting-caliber ability in 2009 spot action.

Tue Apr 20 201017:34Report: Steelers nab Leftwich as QB insurance
The Steelers acquired QB Byron Leftwich from the Bucs in exchange for a seventh-round pick, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
It's no coincidence that Ben Roethlisberger's suspension is expected to be handed down on Wednesday. Charlie Batch is no longer a realistic starting option, and Leftwich played well in Bruce Arians' offense back in 2008. Lefty will push Dennis Dixon and provide insurance in case the young quarterback stumbles in preseason action. He could end up starting 2-4 games early in the season.

Sat Apr 10 201009:00Bucs want to bring Leftwich to training camp
Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris intends to bring Byron Leftwich to training camp, instead of releasing the 30-year-old backup.
Morris doesn't call the personnel shots (over-matched GM Mark Dominik does), so this isn't any guarantee. "Byron was nothing but positive energy for us last year," Morris said. "He didn't work out as a starter...(but) he was a very productive leader." It would be nice of the Bucs to make a lasting decision on Leftwich now, when there's still a solid market for backup quarterbacks.
