Thu Feb 9 201214:06Bears TE Spaeth's roster spot in question
Bears TE Matt Spaeth's roster spot is in question this offseason.
A blocking specialist likely brought in at former OC Mike Martz's behest, Spaeth no longer fits the offense. His $1.875 million salary can be used to re-sign Kellen Davis or make a push for a free agent such as Martellus Bennett.

Tue Nov 8 201101:36Spaeth steals a touchdown for the Bears
Matt Spaeth had two receptions for 13 yards and a touchdown in the Bears' Week 10 win.
This marks just his second touchdown on the year, so no he's not auditioning for a Scott Chandler-type role in Chicago. He has just five catches and 28 yards on the year.

Tue Aug 2 201112:00Bears to use Matt Spaeth as a lineman
The Bears plan to use new TE Matt Spaeth as a sixth lineman in jumbo packages.
They'll expect zero receiving production at tight end this year. "Now we can block defensive ends with tight ends," said position coach Mike DeBord. "We can pass protect. It helps all the way around, short yardage, goal line." Spaeth is drawing comparisons to ex-Bear Jim Covert, who was an offensive tackle.

Thu Jul 28 201112:50Bears take TE Spaeth from Steelers
Bears agreed to terms with TE Matt Spaeth, formerly of the Steelers.
A decent blocker with no after-the-catch ability, Spaeth never developed as the Steelers had hoped. He'll likely be limited to a blocking duties under coordinator Mike Martz. The Bears now have Greg Olsen, Brandon Manumaleuna, Kellen Davis, and Spaeth on the roster. This signing does nothing to quiet the Olsen trade talk.

Sun Dec 19 201020:01Spaeth gets a touchdown in loss
Matt Spaeth caught three passes for 27 yards with a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Jets.
With Heath Miller (concussion) sidelined, Speath played every snap. He even was targeted on the second-to-last play of the game in the back of the end zone, but the ball was batted down at the last second. Spaeth is mainly a blocker, so leave him on waivers even if Miller sits out next week.
Wed Dec 8 201009:07Spaeth cleared by doctors
Steelers TE Matt Spaeth (concussion) has been cleared to return to action.
It's good timing with Heath Miller now out. Spaeth will start in Miller's place this weekend against a Bengals defense that's allowed the 20th-most fantasy points to tight ends. Look elsewhere for your fantasy needs.

Tue Nov 23 201013:54Spaeth sustained concussion in Week 11
Coach Mike Tomlin revealed that backup TE Matt Spaeth sustained a concussion in Week 11.
Along with rookie WR/KR Antonio Brown (knee), Heath Miller's backup will be questionable for Sunday's game at Buffalo.

Thu Apr 15 201012:31Spaeth signs Steelers' tender offer
Steelers re-signed restricted free agent TE Matt Spaeth to a one-year contract.
Spaeth hasn't quite developed as the Steelers had hoped when they drafted him in the third round in 2007. He's not on Heath Miller's level as a blocker, and his after-the-catch skills are practically non-existent. He'll back up Miller again in 2010.
