Fri Jun 29 201217:57Paul Maholm combines on shutout of Astros
Paul Maholm allowed just four hits over 8 1/3 innings Friday in a 4-0 win over the Astros.
If it was 5-0 or 6-0, Maholm probably would have gotten to go for his fourth career shutout. As it was, manager Dale Sveum opted to make the switch after Maholm allowed a single and a double in the ninth. The lefty was at a mere 98 pitches, so that wasn't the issue. Fortunately, Carlos Marmol got the job done after taking over, giving Maholm his first win since May 9. He's 5-6 with a 4.84 ERA.

Wed Jun 13 201200:07Maholm strong in no-decision vs Tigers
Paul Maholm turned in a very strong performance in a no-decision against the Tigers on Tuesday, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings of work.
Maholm racked up a season-high seven strikeouts in the game while walking just one. He cruised through the first six innings, then allowed the first two hitters to reach in the seventh before being removed. The Cubs bullpen then quickly allowed both inherited runners to score, as well as a third run, taking away Maholm's much deserved shot at the win. He'll take his 4-5 record and 4.91 ERA into his next start against the Red Sox at home on Sunday.

Paul Maholm got roughed up in Sunday's loss to the White Sox, allowing five runs on nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Maholm struck out five and walked none, but was done in by surrendering three home runs. The non-quality outing was his second straight, and leaves him with a 4.73 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 27/12 K/BB ratio through 45 2/3 innings. Off the radar in mixed leagues, he'll get the light-hitting Pirates in Pittsburgh next weekend.

Sun Apr 1 201210:25Paul Maholm to make debut April 10
Paul Maholm will stay in Arizona to make a minor league start before joining the Cubs rotation on April 10.
Maholm has been terrific this spring and will likely be the team's third-best starter this season, but he ended last season with a shoulder injury and dealt with the flu in March, so he'll be fifth out of the gate. He should have some NL-only value this year.

Mon Mar 26 201219:51Maholm throws five scoreless in win
Paul Maholm scattered four hits and two walks across five scoreless innings of work in Monday's 2-0 win over the Padres.
Maholm's strong spring rolls on, as he's now the owner of a 0.90 ERA and 10/4 K/BB ratio through 10 innings of work. He has an exceptionally low ceiling, but is worth a roster spot in NL-only leagues.

Sun Mar 18 201214:53Paul Maholm's shoulder is fine
Paul Maholm has had no issues with his pitching shoulder this spring.
Maholm missed the final six weeks of the 2011 season because of a strained shoulder, but he's felt totally healthy this spring other than a bout with the flu. ``I did what I was supposed to do in the offseason. I rested, rehabbed,'' he said. ``Ever since I started throwing, it's felt great. It feels normal. The strain wasn't a serious thing. My shoulder feels a little bit stronger. I'm still not going to blow up the radar gun, but to me it feels good.'' Maholm will be the Cubs' No. 3 starter this season.

Wed Mar 7 201214:11Paul Maholm (flu) throws bullpen session
Paul Maholm (flu) threw a bullpen session Wednesday.
He's expected to throw another bullpen session Friday before finally making his Cactus League debut. The 29-year-old southpaw was a bit limited early in camp due to flu-like symptoms, but he still has plenty of time to get ready for the season. Maholm signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract with Chicago in January after posting a 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 1/3 innings last season with Pittsburgh.

Sun Feb 26 201216:51SP Maholm day-to-day with the flu
Paul Maholm is day-to-day with the flu.
Keeping him away from camp until the he's no longer contagious is smart thinking. Maholm should be back in the next few days. The Cubs signed Maholm to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with a $6.5 million option for 2013 in January. The 29-year-old left-hander posted a 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 1/3 innings with the Pirates last season before being shut down in August with a shoulder strain.

Tue Jan 10 201208:44Cubs sign Maholm to one-year, $4.25M contract
Cubs signed LHP Paul Maholm to a one-year, $4.25 million contract with a $6.5 million option for 2013.
That 2013 club option carries a $500,000 buyout, so Maholm is essentially guaranteed $5 million. It's not a terrible price for the 29-year-old left-hander, who registered a 3.66 ERA in 29 starts last season for Pittsburgh. He should help anchor a Cubs pitching staff that is veering young. Look for the Matt Garza trade talks to heat up.

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are "close" to signing left-hander Paul Maholm.
Maholm, 29, has also drawn serious interest this winter from the Orioles, Mariners and Red Sox. But the Cubs appear to be nearing the first big free agent signing of the Theo Epstein era. Fri Jan 6 201215:30Four teams in on left-hander Paul Maholm
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that the Cubs, Orioles, Mariners and Red Sox are in on free agent left-hander Paul Maholm.
Rosenthal adds that the Pirates have kept in touch, but a reunion isn't likely. We've heard about the Cubs and Orioles having interest in the southpaw, but the Mariners and Red Sox are new teams in the mix. Maholm held a 3.66 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 26 starts this past season, but his season ended prematurely due to a strained shoulder. Given the amount of interest in him, teams must be convinced that he's now fine physically.

Wed Jan 4 201200:19Report: Pirates have talked with Maholm
Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pirates have talked with Paul Maholm, but that a return to Pittsburgh is unlikely.
The Pirates are looking to bolster their rotation, but Kovacevic writes that they will likely look toward non-roster invitees (Jo-Jo Reyes, for example) as opposed to higher-profile starters. The club declined Maholm's $9.75 million club option for 2012 in late-October. The Orioles and Cubs have expressed interest in the southpaw this offseason.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Orioles have expressed interest in Paul Maholm.
It's closing in on crunch time for the Orioles, who had by far the worst starting rotation in the major leagues last year and have yet to make a significant upgrade beyond Japanese right-hander Tsuyoshi Wada. Maholm, 29, posted a 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 2/3 innings last season before being shut down in August with a shoulder strain. The Cubs are also interested.

Fri Dec 16 201119:48Cubs in talks with left-hander Paul Maholm

Maholm became a free agent after the Pirates declined his $9.75 million option at the end of October. The 29-year-old left-hander posted a quality 3.66 ERA and 97/50 K/BB ratio over 162 2/3 innings this season before being shut down in August with a shoulder strain. Mon Oct 31 201110:46Pirates decline 2012 option on Paul Maholm
Pirates declined LHP Paul Maholm's $9.75 million option for 2012.
Maholm posted a solid 3.66 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 26 starts this season, but he eventually had to be shut down with a shoulder strain and there's some concern about his ability to repeat such a high quality stat line in 2012. The 29-year-old left-hander should draw multiple bids on the open market this winter.
