Thu Aug 25 201121:22Indians acquire slugger Jim Thome from Twins
Indians acquired DH Jim Thome from the Twins for a player to be named later.
The Indians won a waiver claim for the veteran slugger Thursday and had a deal struck with Minnesota within a couple hours. Thome turns 41 years old later this month and can't play every day, but he's a powerful presence when in the lineup and should give the second-place Tribe a nice late-season spark. He had 12 home runs and 40 RBI in 206 at-bats this year for the Twins.

Thu Aug 25 201121:04Twins' Jim Thome accepts trade to Indians
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that Jim Thome has indeed accepted a trade to the Indians.
Thome's no-trade clause gave him final say over the waiver claim. He's expected to head off to Cleveland shortly and should be in the Indians' starting lineup on Friday night against the Royals. A 40-year-old veteran slugger, he has 12 homers in 206 at-bats this season. No word yet on what the Twins will get in return.

Thu Aug 25 201117:43Indians finalizing trade for Twins' Jim Thome
According to Nick Camino of WTAM 1100, the Indians are finalizing a trade for Twins DH Jim Thome.
Thome "will be in an Indians uniform" by Friday night, according to Camino's sources. The Indians placed a waiver claim on the veteran slugger Thursday afternoon and are apparently close to working out a trade agreement with the Twins. Thome should serve as Cleveland's semi-regular designated hitter down the stretch. He's tallied 12 home runs in 206 at-bats this season.

Thu Aug 25 201112:56Indians awarded claim on Twins' Jim Thome
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Indians were awarded the claim on Twins' DH Jim Thome.
Of course, just because the Indians won the claim doesn't mean they will get him. According to Rosenthal, the veteran slugger has a no-trade clause and would prefer to go to the Phillies. The Twins could always pull him back from waivers and release him, allowing him to sign with Philadelphia, though that would likely cause a major uproar among MLB general managers. Stay tuned.

The identities of the claiming teams aren't yet known, but they now have 48 hours to work out a deal. Stay tuned for an update.

Wed Aug 24 201109:14Report: ChiSox expected to claim Jim Thome
According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, there is a "high expectation" among baseball executives that the White Sox will win the claim for Jim Thome.
Thome was placed on waivers Monday. If the White Sox do indeed win the claim, they will have to work out a trade. If the Twins don't get a satisfactory offer, they could always pull him back. Thome, who turns 41 on Saturday, is batting .253/.363/.495 with 12 homers and an .858 OPS over 234 plate appearances this season.

Mon Aug 22 201115:14Twins place slugger Jim Thome on waivers
The Twins placed Jim Thome on waivers Monday.
Thome has a cool .868 OPS and 12 home runs in 230 plate appearances this year, and probably won't get by many teams before a claim is made. The Phillies are known to have interest, but it's unlikely that they'll actually get a chance to put a bid in for the veteran slugger.

Fri Aug 19 201113:08Twins open to moving Thome?
The Twins would reportedly "be willing to accommodate" Jim Thome if he asks for a trade to a contending team this month.
It would make a good deal of sense for the Twins to move Thome, but seeing as he's hitting .299/.378/.598 with six home runs and 21 RBI since the All-Star break (and doing so on a budget salary), it's extremely unlikely he'd clear waivers. That would mean the Twins could work out a trade with only one team.

He took Brad Penny deep for a solo shot in the second inning, and added an RBI single in the eighth. Thome is now batting .310 with six home runs and 21 RBI since the All-Star break, and could be a real asset in even shallower mixed leagues down the stretch.

Jim Thome accounted for the only Minnesota run on Thursday, blasting a solo homer in the eighth inning to ruin Dan Haren's shutout bid.
He also pushed his hitting streak to nine games, during which his average has risen 46 points to .252. Thome was held out of Wednesday's game due to a stiff neck. Barring an injury, he should reach the 600-homer plateau before too long, as he's looking more locked in lately.

Thu Aug 4 201108:55Thome out of lineup with stiff neck
Jim Thome was held out of Wednesday's lineup against the Angels for precautionary reasons due to a stiff neck.
"Thome had a little bit of a stiff neck when he got here today, so he thought as the day went along he'd be able to get in there and take some," said Twins manager Ron Gardenhire. "But I think I'm not going to press my luck with anything like that." The veteran slugger can be considered day-to-day.
