According to Anthony Castrovince of MLB.com, the Indians are considering using Jayson Nix at third base next season. | ||||||
Nix isn't a long-term option at the position, but he could be a temporary in-house stop-gap until top prospect Lonnie Chisenhall is ready for the big leagues. The big downside here is that he made 11 errors in 40 games at third base down the stretch, so the Tribe has sent him to winter ball in Puerto Rico in order to get more acclimated with the position. We're not crazy about Nix from a fantasy perspective, but his surprising pop and multi-position eligibility could be of use in AL-only leagues. | ||||||

Since becoming the Indians' everyday third baseman in late July, Nix has actually performed well. He's now hitting .318 with four homers and seven RBI in 20 August games, but AL-only owners should be trying to do better than this glorified utility man. | ||||||

It was the second career multi-homer game for Nix, who was just claimed off waivers from the White Sox on June 24. He's started nine of the last 10 games at second, and tonight's showing will certainly keep him in the lineup. | ||||||

Nix replaced Mark Teahen earlier in the game when Teahen suffered a finger injury. The grand slam followed Shields losing his command and allowing a walk, single, and hit batter. Nix then worked a 3-2 count off Shields before taking him deep down the left field line. The big hit may get Nix another start or two this week, but he's not a fantasy option. | ||||||
