Wed Sep 8 201011:38Varitek hopes to play beyond 2011
Jason Varitek told Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald that he would like to play "a few more years."
"I want to listen to my body," said Varitek. "At this point, I definitely want to play another year. I'd like to play a few more years. We'll just have to see. If things go the other way and I wasn't healthy, I'd have to evaluate. But I've made some drastic improvements, and I'm almost rejuvenated." Varitek, 38, will be a free agent after the season. He recently missed nine weeks with a fracture in his right foot, but has been productive in a limited role this season. Barring injury, he should be able to extend his career in a backup role, whether in Boston or somewhere else.

Sun Sep 5 201017:03Varitek wants to play in 2011
Jason Varitek said he'll continue playing baseball in 2011.
"We've got a month left," Varitek said. "But I'm going to play. I'm excited to. I'm doing some things as good or better than I ever have." Varitek will be a free agent this offseason after completing a one-year, $5 million deal in 2009 and exercising a $3 million player option this past season. He's no longer a starting-caliber catcher, but perhaps he can continue to hang on as a backup.

Fri Aug 27 201016:15Varitek nears return from broken foot
Jason Varitek, on the way back from a broken foot, ran Friday and said he felt ready to return to game action.
The Red Sox will have Varitek and Jarrod Saltalamacchia both ready to come off the DL next week, so Victor Martinez could see a lot of time at first base during September. Varitek will probably begin his rehab assignment at some point within the next few days.

Sat Aug 21 201017:30Varitek to ramp up rehab efforts next week
Jason Varitek (foot) is expected to ramp up his rehab next week.
Varitek was told Saturday that he can't do further damage to his once-fractured foot, meaning it's almost time for full baseball-related activities. The catcher has been sidelined since early July and is hoping to return to the Red Sox in early September. So far, that goal is plenty reachable.

Jason Varitek (foot) is continuing to progress at a pace 10-14 days behind Dustin Pedroia.
Pedroia is expected to return to the Red Sox lineup next Tuesday, so that means Varitek could be back by the end of the month, but more likely, the beginning of next month. He's been out since early July with a fractured foot.

Sun Aug 8 201019:28Varitek (foot) takes batting practice Sunday
Jason Varitek took batting practice on the field Sunday for the first time since fracturing a bone in his right foot.
The catcher has been sidelined since early July and only recently began jogging. He still isn't near defining a timetable for his return. "I'm recovering day to day and getting better each day," Varitek said. "Whatever we're doing, I'm handling it, not going backwards each day. Probably this next week is going to tell a lot. I've been off crutches and learned how to walk in a one-week period. But it still has to respond. I've got to run better than I am right now."

Sun Aug 8 201008:36Still no timetable for Varitek's return
There is still no timetable for the return of Jason Varitek (foot).
Varitek, who is coming back from a broken foot, has been able to do some more aggressive running. "I would say he's gotten a little bit more aggressive, probably `slightly' is the best word,'' Francona said. The catcher has been sidelined since early July, and the original timetable for a return was 4-6 weeks.

Fri Jul 16 201017:30Varitek not close to rejoining Red Sox
Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Friday that Jason Varitek is about two weeks behind Dustin Pedroia in his recovery from a broken foot.
Pedroia is slated to be in a boot for two more weeks, and he probably won't rejoin the Red Sox for three more weeks. So, it doesn't look like we'll be seeing Varitek for at least a month.

Fri Jul 2 201017:05Red Sox place Varitek on 15-day DL
Red Sox placed catcher Jason Varitek on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 1, with a broken right foot.
Varitek will miss at least four weeks and probably six. The Red Sox will have to get by with Kevin Cash and Gustavo Molina until Victor Martinez returns after the All-Star break.
Thu Jul 1 201023:06Jason Varitek out 4-6 weeks with broken foot
Jason Varitek is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks with a broken foot.
Oh, baby. Victor Martinez was placed on the disabled list just a few days ago with a fracture at the tip of his left thumb and is expected to miss at least the next two weeks. Good thing the Red Sox went out and traded for Kevin Cash on Thursday, because he will likely be handling starting duties.

Sun May 23 201014:41Varitek won't be Matsuzaka's caddy
Jason Varitek said that he would not be Daisuke Matsuzaka's personal catcher, despite the success the two have had this season working together.
"People have to understand one thing: If you start doing that as a team, it puts ourselves and our starting catcher in an awkward position in that he doesn't get the right days off,"Varitek told MLB.com's Ian Browne. "I need to play when he [Victor Martinez] needs to not play, and it doesn't matter who's on the mound."
Tue May 11 201022:24Varitek continues to hit in part-time role
Jason Varitek went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run as the Red Sox edged the Blue Jays 6-1 on Tuesday night.
Varitek's second-inning homer put the Red Sox up 3-0, a lead they were never in jeopardy of ceding. He has been extremely -- and surprisingly -- effective offensively as a part-time catcher this season, bumping his hitting line on Tuesday to .342/.419/.868 in 43 plate appearances. Varitek has solid AL-only value at this point.
Sun May 2 201010:37Varitek catches Beckett once again
For the fourth consecutive time, Jason Varitek will be behind the plate for Josh Beckett's start.
While there hasn't been an official pronouncement, it certainly seems as though Varitek has become Beckett's personal catcher. Victor Martinez gets the day off entirely as David Ortiz remains in the lineup as the DH.

Mon Apr 26 201023:46Red Sox win wild one, 13-12 over Jays
Jason Varitek went 3-for-5 with four RBI as the Red Sox edged the Blue Jays 13-12 on Monday night.
It was 1-0 Boston after two, but both teams scored in each of the next eight half innings, with the Red Sox holding a 13-10 lead after six. It calmed down after that, though the Jays did come back with two in the eighth before Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon shut the door. The game ended up lasting 4:03, a new high for a nine-inning game this year.
