Thu Sep 9 201014:28Reds' Cabrera out with sore oblique
Orlando Cabrera is out of the starting lineup for a second straight day Thursday due to a sore oblique.
Cabrera re-injured his oblique running from first to third on Tuesday, but hopes to be ready to play Friday. "I can play today," Cabrera said. "I feel that I don't want to play one game and sit for two. I'd rather take my rest right now with the day game and hopefully start Friday and play through the weekend." Paul Janish is starting at shortstop Thursday.

Sat Sep 4 201014:03Cabrera returns to lineup Saturday
As expected, Orlando Cabrera is in the lineup Saturday.
Cabrera hasn't played in over a month due to a strained oblique. If we were the Reds, we'd keep Paul Janish at shortstop, but Cincy will keep the veteran in the lineup as long as he's healthy.

Fri Sep 3 201020:40Reds' Cabrera to return to lineup Saturday
Reds manager Dusty Baker said that Orlando Cabrera will be in the starting lineup Saturday.
Paul Janish started against the Cardinals on Friday. He looks like the superior option at shortstop right now, but it looks like Cabrera will play as long as he is healthy.

Fri Sep 3 201014:52Reds activate SS Cabrera from DL
Reds activated shortstop Orlando Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list.
Cabrera simply doesn't deserve to play over Paul Janish, but he probably will anyway. He's hit .260/.302/.339 in 416 at-bats for the season. Janish's .265/.350/.387 line is probably a fluke, but he is the better defender at shortstop. At the very least, the Reds should go back to Janish if Cabrera doesn't step it up over the next couple of weeks.
Tue Aug 31 201016:58Reds' Cabrera expects to return this weekend
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) expects to be activated from the disabled list for this weekend's series against the Cardinals.
And it looks like he might make it. He hit and threw Tuesday without pain. "I feel great," said Cabrera. "First time, not pain." Cabrera has been sidelined since August 3 due to a strained left oblique. Paul Janish will continue to fill in until he's ready.

Thu Aug 26 201009:39Cabrera might not be activated until Monday
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) could be activated from the disabled list Friday, but it's more likely that the Reds will wait until Monday.
Cabrera is still feeling some pain in his left side when he throws. "I've talked to a couple of guys," Cabrera said. "They said that lasts a long time." The shortstop has been out since the beginning of August.

Tue Aug 24 201010:22O-Cabs likely to be activated at end of week
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) might not return until the end of the week.
Cabrera is mostly healed from a strained left oblique, but the Reds don't want to risk re-injury. "Probably not. If he hurts it again, he's done for the rest of the year," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "It has to be 100 percent with the injury he has or it will rear its ugly head again."

Sun Aug 22 201008:59Cabrera likely to return this week
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) is expected to return to the lineup sometime this week.
Cabrera was able to throw Friday without any pain, which was a big step since throwing is what was giving him the most problems. He thinks he'll be ready for the series in San Francisco that starts Monday, but Reds manager Dusty Baker isn't so sure. "We'll see," Baker said. "I'm not sure. It's going to be cool. That doesn't help the situation. When he says he's ready, it will be a couple of days." Baker is looking more toward August 27, when the Reds return home from a road trip.

Sat Aug 21 201009:28Cabrera also dealing with stiff neck
Orlando Cabrera, who is on the disabled list with a strained oblique, is now also dealing with a stiff neck.
The shortstop tested his oblique on the field Friday and said it was better, but he admitted that his neck is "killing him." Reds manager Dusty Baker said Cabrera would not be activated during the series with the Dodgers. It's unclear if the neck ailment has pushed his return date back.

Thu Aug 19 201009:42Reds' Cabrera (oblique) not ready to return
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) isn't ready to return from the disabled list.
"Just because you're on the 15-day DL that doesn't mean your body is on the 15-day DL," said Reds manager Dusty Baker. "When it comes to those obliques, I didn't think 15 days was going to be enough anyway." Cabrera still feels a pulling where the strain occurred in his left oblique when he throws, so don't look for him until this weekend at the earliest. The way Paul Janish is playing, he can afford to take his team.

Sun Aug 15 201009:50Cabrera still hopes to be activated Wednesday
Orlando Cabrera (oblique) has started doing some hitting the past few days.
"But nothing crazy," he said. "I'm just going to start getting comfortable again, lose the fear." Cabrera added that he still hopes to come off the DL Wednesday when he's eligible to be activated. Given his comments, that seems like a bit of a reach, but we'll see.

Tue Aug 3 201017:05Reds place Cabrera (oblique) on DL
Reds placed SS Orlando Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.
Cabrera suffered the injury while swinging at a pitch in the ninth inning Monday night. Hopefully two weeks off will do the trick. Paul Janish should be the everyday shortstop until he is ready to return, but he's more of a gloveman than a fantasy asset.
Mon Aug 2 201023:01Reds' Cabrera (oblique) likely headed to DL
Orlando Cabrera will "almost certainly" head to the disabled list with a strained oblique, according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Cabrera tweaked his oblique in the ninth inning of Monday's win over the Pirates. He will be re-examined on Tuesday in Cincinnati. If he requires a stint to the disabled list, look for Paul Janish to play everyday at shortstop, while prospect infielder Chris Valaika could get the call from Triple-A Louisville.

Mon Aug 2 201022:18Reds' Cabrera leaves with back injury
Orlando Cabrera left Monday's game against the Pirates with a back injury.
Cabrera clutched at his lower left back after grounding into a double play to end the top of the ninth inning. He was replaced by Paul Janish.

Mon Jul 26 201018:49Cabrera batting leadoff for Reds on Monday
Orlando Cabrera will bat leadoff against the Brewers on Monday night.
Brandon Phillips' last 26 starts have been out of the leadoff spot, however his recent struggles have prompted Reds manager Dusty Baker to make a change. Phillips has just three hits in his last 25 at-bats (.120), while Cabrera is batting .378 (17-for-45) over his last 11 games.

Fri Jul 2 201009:40Reds' Cabrera (ankle) at '80 percent'
Orlando Cabrera said his sprained right ankle is at about "80 percent."
"You have to play with different pains," said Carbera. "I told Dusty (Baker) I don't think it's a big enough deal for me to go on the DL, if I can just stay there and play through it." Cabrera was in a massive slump last month, and his ankle surely didn't help, but is 7-for-18 (.389) over the past four games.

Mon Jun 21 201018:49O-Cab out of Monday's lineup
Orlando Cabrera is out of the starting lineup against the Athletics on Monday night.
Cabrera is batting just .189 this month and has been dealing with a sprained ankle, so he'll take a breather. Defensive specialist Paul Janish gets the start, batting second against Gio Gonzalez.

Sun Jun 20 201002:59Reds' Cabrera goes hitless in loss
Orlando Cabrera went hitless Saturday and is batting .200 with just three walks in 70 at-bats this month.
The evidence suggests that the Reds would have been better off keeping Drew Stubbs in the leadoff spot rather than going to Cabrera back in early May. Cabrera is hitting .250 with a .295 OBP in 38 games as a leadoff man. Also, he's been at his best in RBI situations this year, but he's not getting many of those hitting behind the pitcher.
Fri Jun 18 201009:01Cabrera dealing with sprained ankle
Orlando Cabrera revealed Thursday that he has been dealing with a sprained ankle since early June.
Cabrera suffered the injury when the Reds played the Nationals earlier this month. "Every day it's a struggle, but I can still play," said Cabrera, who has a visible limp. The injury looks to have affected the 35-year-old shortstop at the plate, as he is just 3-for-25 (.120) over his last seven games. Cabrera is batting .255/.294/.351 with three homers, 27 RBI and nine stolen bases overall this season.

Thu Jun 10 201010:32Orlando Cabrera out of Thursday's lineup
Orlando Cabrera is out of the starting lineup for Thursday's matinee against the Giants.
No injury here. It's a scheduled day off for the veteran shortstop. "I'm an old man," Cabrera said. "We just want to keep everybody sharp. Janish is a big piece of this team. We have to keep him sharp too." Paul Janish will start at shortstop and bat second against Todd Wellemeyer.
