Mon Jan 10 201113:44Pads ink Bartlett to two-year, $11M extension
Padres signed SS Jason Bartlett to a two-year, $11 million contract extension with a vesting option for 2013.
The deal will buy out Bartlett's final arbitration season and his first year of free agency, all at a fairly cheap rate. He was acquired from the Rays earlier this winter for pitchers Adam Russell, Brandon Gomes and Cesar Ramos, and second baseman Cole Figueroa. The 31-year-old Bartlett posted a poor .254/.324/.350 batting line in 2010 for Tampa Bay, but he could fare a little better in the NL West. He posted a quality 879 OPS for the Rays in 2009.

Fri Dec 17 201018:21Padres finally acquire Jason Bartlett from TB
Padres acquired SS Jason Bartlett and a player to be named from the Rays in exchange for RHPs Adam Russell and Brandon Gomes, LHP Cesar Ramos and 2B Cole Figueroa.
The original deal reportedly was only Bartlett for Russell and Ramos, but it had to be adjusted after a physical revealed an injury problem with Ramos (it's not clear what the injury was). Bartlett is coming off a down year following a terrific 2009, a season that looks like a complete outlier when compared to the rest of his career. Still, he, along with Orlando Hudson, gives the Padres some much needed upgrades in the middle infield.
Thu Dec 16 201014:37Pads' deal for Jason Bartlett nearly resolved
SI.com's Jon Heyman reports that the issues surrounding Jason Bartlett's trade to the Padres are "nearly resolved."
We're still not sure exactly what the problem was, though the speculation is that it had to do with an injury to Padres reliever Cesar Ramos, who was slated to head to the Rays along with Adam Russell. It's not clear if the players involved in the deal have been adjusted or what the compromise has been, but it appears the deal will finally go through. More to come.

Wed Dec 15 201020:28Pads' chances on Bartlett 'better than 50-50'
Jon Heyman of SI.com heard from a source that the Padres' trade for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett is "better than 50-50" to happen.
It's not clear what exactly is holding up the swap. San Diego reliever Adam Russell had something go wrong during his physical, so maybe the Pads and Rays are figuring out a different player. Bartlett would start at shortstop if traded out west. He'll be a bench guy in Tampa if not.

Fri Dec 10 201020:57Report: Could Bartlett deal fall through?
According to Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune, something wrong with the physical of Adam Russell or Cesar Ramos is holding up the Jason Bartlett trade.
Center says the Rays wanted to get a second opinion on one of the pitchers, and although the issue isn't considered serious, "there are no guarantees the deal will go through as originally agreed upon." The two teams could agree upon a different player, or it's possible the Rays could decide the injury issue isn't sufficient enough to halt the deal. Stay tuned.

Thu Dec 9 201021:31Physicals ony thing holding Bartlett deal up
The North County Times' Dan Hayes reports that the only thing holding up the trade of Jason Bartlett to the Padres is physicals for the involved players.
The deal was held up a couple different times, but it appears it will go through without any issues unless some unknown medical issues crop up. The Padres are slated to get Bartlett from the Rays in exchange for relievers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos.

Thu Dec 9 201013:01Padres' trade for Jason Bartlett put on hold
According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, the Rays' trade with the Padres involving Jason Bartlett has been put on hold.
The deal was announced as official on Wednesday evening, then stalled by something unknown, then announced again as official late Wednesday night. Now it's back off. The Padres were in line to land shortstop Jason Bartlett from the Rays for relievers Adam Russell and Cesar Ramos. It's a swap that works well for both sides, given San Diego's need for better shortstop production and Tampa Bay's need for bullpen help, but it's not yet an official trade. The Pads may be trying to secure some money from the Rays.

Wed Dec 8 201019:28Pads get Bartlett from Rays for two relievers
Padres acquired SS Jason Bartlett from the Rays for RHP Adam Russell and LHP Cesar Ramos.
A crafty move by the Rays, who are set at shortstop next season with Reid Brignac and badly needed relief help. Bartlett struggled to hit for power in 2010 and probably won't have better luck in San Diego's massive PETCO Park, but he's just one year removed from the 879 OPS that he registered in 2009. Maybe he will find a way to channel some of that past success.
Wed Dec 8 201018:27Report: Pads acquire Jason Bartlett from Rays
Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres have acquired shortstop Jason Bartlett in a trade with the Rays.
No word yet on who or what the Padres are sending east. Bartlett, 31, posted a poor .254/.324/.350 batting line in 2010 for the Rays, but he registered an 879 OPS just one year ago and could get back to that level of success with this change of scenery. More to come.

Wed Dec 8 201017:02Rays expected to trade Jason Bartlett soon
According to the New York Post's Joel Sherman, Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett is very likely to be traded on Wednesday night.
The Orioles are no longer in the running, but the Padres and Pirates are very interested and my engage in a kind of trading war Wednesday evening at baseball's Winter Meetings. Bartlett, 31, batted just 254/.324/.350 this year for Tampa Bay, but he's only one year removed from a truly productive offensive season. A change of scenery could mean big things.

Tue Dec 7 201016:04Rays want Reimold and Simon from O's
According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Rays want Aldredo Simon and Nolan Reimold from the Orioles in exchange for Jason Bartlett.
Getting Reimold in return for Bartlett would already constitute a victory for the Rays, so the potential inclusion of Simon would just be a bonus. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 4.93 ERA and 37/23 K/BB ratio over 49 1/3 innings this season and could be an interesting piece for a Tampa Bay bullpen that is being reconstructed this winter.

Tue Dec 7 201012:57Rays and O's working on Bartlett-for-Reimold
According to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun, the Rays and Orioles are working toward a Jason Bartlett-for-Nolan Reimold swap.

Wed Dec 1 201016:16Pirates have interest in Bartlett, Hardy
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com, the Pirates have interest in Jason Bartlett and J.J. Hardy.
The Pirates are in good position for a deal at the moment, as the market for both players are a bit limited now that the Cardinals and Giants have found shortstops. Either player would represent an upgrade over the incumbent shortstop Ronny Cedeno, who owns a .245 career batting average.

Wed Dec 1 201000:25Giants now 'out' on Rays SS Jason Bartlett
Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports that the Giants are now "out" on trade talks involving Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.
They exhausted all of their resources Tuesday on veteran shortstop Miguel Tejada. Bartlett is still drawing interest from the Cardinals, according to SI.com's Jon Heyman, but a swap with St. Louis seems unlikely in wake of the recent Ryan Theriot trade. The Rays may have no choice but to keep Bartlett, unless a mystery team steps forward in the next few weeks.

Tue Nov 30 201023:00Giants, Cards still hoping for Bartlett deal
According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, neither the Giants nor the Cardinals have ruled out trading for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.
The Giants signed veteran shortstop Miguel Tejada to a one-year, $6.5 million contract on Tuesday evening and the Cardinals picked up Ryan Theriot from the Dodgers for right-hander Blake Hawksworth. But if Bartlett is going to come cheap, both teams might be willing to add him to provide competition on the infield. Bartlett posted an 879 OPS just one year ago.

Tue Nov 30 201016:46Giants serious about landing Rays SS Bartlett
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that the Giants have "become one of the most serious suitors" for Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett.
The Cardinals were in the mix but landed Ryan Theriot from the Dodgers on Tuesday and plan to start him at shortstop next season. Bartlett is 31 and batted just .254 with a .324 on-base percentage in 2010. But the Giants have a hole at shortstop with Edgar Renteria retiring and Juan Uribe signing elsewhere. Bartlett did post quality offensive numbers one year ago.

Mon Nov 29 201023:16'Nothing imminent' with Bartlett trade
Jon Heyman of SI.com hears that there's "nothing imminent" regarding a trade with Jason Bartlett.
Like Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, Heyman hears that the Cardinals and Giants are in the mix, but it doesn't appear that a deal is close. Bartlett, 31, batted just .254/.324/.350 this past season and rates below average defensively at shortstop, so he's certainly expendable from the Rays' perspective, especially if they can get a piece for their bullpen in return.

Mon Nov 29 201018:41Multiple teams interested in Jason Bartlett
Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com reports that interest in Jason Bartlett is "intensifying."
According to Rosenthal, the Cardinals, Giants, Padres, Orioles and Pirates all have expressed recent interest in Bartlett. Now that Juan Uribe has signed with the Dodgers, the Giants have even more reason to be aggressive. The Rays have Reid Brignac at the ready as a replacement at shortstop, so it would make some sense to move the arbitration-eligible Bartlett for some bullpen help.

Mon Nov 22 201017:28Cards and Padres interested in Jason Bartlett
In addition to the Giants, Orioles, and Nationals, Jason Bartlett is drawing interest from the Cardinals and Padres.
Both teams make sense, especially considering how thin the infielder free agent pool is. The deadline for clubs to submit a bid for negotiating rights with Japanese INF Tsuyoshi Nishioka is Tuesday at 5:00 PM Eastern. Tampa Bay will likely wait to see which team wins Nishioka's rights before making any sort of Bartlett trade.

Sun Nov 21 201013:17Report: Three teams interested in Bartlett
Jason Bartlett is drawing trade interest from the Giants, Orioles and Nationals, according to the Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo.
Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times reported earlier that he expects Bartlett to be traded before spring training. The 31-year-old batted just .254/.324/.350 this past season and rates below average defensively at shortstop. He is one year away from free agency, but Reid Brignac is ready to take over at shortstop.
