Thu May 7 201510:56Reed will announce retirement as NFL player on Thursday
Reed will announce his retirement as an NFL player on Thursday, the Baltimore Sun reports.
The nine-time Pro Bowl selection finishes his career with 64 interceptions, which ranks him sixth overall in NFL history in that category. The 36-year-old -- who spend the first 11 years of his distinguished career with the Ravens -- last saw NFL action in 2013, when he played for both the Texans and Jets, notching 48 tackles in 14 games.
Sat Jun 28 201419:39Jets not interested in bringing back Ed Reed
ESPN New York reports the Jets have no interest in signing free agent Ed Reed.
Reed told reporters earlier this month he hopes to continue playing, but hasn't received any free-agent interest. His best chance at signing with a team could come after Week 1, when base salaries aren't guaranteed. Calvin Pryor, Antonio Allen, and Dawan Landry are entrenched as the Jets' top three safeties. Beat writer Rich Cimini thinks Reed would only be an option should injuries strike.

Sun Jun 1 201417:37Ed Reed, 35, wants to continue playing career
Free agent Ed Reed, 35, told reporters at Ravens CB Lardarius Webb's annual softball event Sunday that he hopes to continue playing football.
It's our first Reed update since mid-February, an indication of how nonexistent NFL interest in him has been. Reed says he's "taking my time," but "still preparing to play," although he doesn't want to participate in training camp. It's possible a safety-needy team would give Reed a look after Week 1, when base salaries are no longer guaranteed. The bottom fell out on Reed's career in 2012. The Texans signed him last offseason to a three-year, $15 million contract on owner Bob McNair's mandate, but released Reed in November. He latched on with the Jets but was ineffective in seven appearances with New York.

Fri Feb 14 201411:50Jets not expected to rush to re-sign Ed Reed
ESPN New York doesn't believe free agent S Ed Reed figures into the Jets' immediate plans.
The Jets have four safeties under contract, including starters Antonio Allen and Dawan Landry. Beat writer Rich Cimini thinks Reed would simply be a fallback option should the Jets suffer any in-season injuries. Reed has lost many steps and was a weekly burn victim in coverage last season. He's our No. 29 free-agent safety.

Mon Dec 23 201308:22Ed Reed only played in sub packages
Ed Reed only played in sub packages during Sunday's Week 16 win over the Browns.
Finally, coach Rex Ryan didn't let his infatuation with Reed overtake what's best for his team. Antonio Allen started and Reed exclusively played on passing downs, leading to 30-of-65 snaps. It's too little too late as the washed up future Hall of Famer had played on 85 percent of the snaps in the previous five games, but at least Rex had the guts to make the switch.

Thu Dec 5 201315:36Ed Reed says he wants to play two more years
Ed Reed says he'd like to play two more years beyond 2013.
As ESPN's Jamison Hensley points out, that's amusing, as Reed was constantly "contemplating retirement" when he was in his prime. Reed's play has sunk to depressing depths this season, so there's no guarantee he'll find a taker for 2014. The way he handled his hip injury and time in Houston won't help.

Tue Dec 3 201309:41Ed Reed will continue to start for Jets
Coach Rex Ryan said Ed Reed will continue to start for the Jets.
Reed has played virtually every snap at free safety for the Jets since signing three weeks ago. During that span, E.J. Manuel, Joe Flacco and Ryan Tannehill have combined to go 65-of-97 (67.0 percent) for 849 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions. The Jets have lost all three games. "I think Ed gives us the best shot," the ever-loyal Ryan said.

Coach Rex Ryan insisted that the 66-yard touchdown bomb from Joe Flacco to Jacoby Jones Sunday was not Ed Reed's fault.

Mon Nov 18 201309:20Ed Reed steps right into full-time role
Making his Jets debut Sunday, Ed Reed played on 61-of-69 defensive snaps.
The Jets secondary was shredded by E.J. Manuel, who went 20-of-28 for 245 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. It wasn't all Reed's fault of course, but his presence certainly didn't help the secondary. The Ravens and Texans gave up on the future Hall of Famer because he can't run anymore and Sunday's debut won't do anything to squash that notion. Former starter Antonio Allen played just four snaps.

Sun Nov 17 201311:41Jets announce Ed Reed as Week 11 starter
The Jets announced ahead of Sunday's game at Buffalo that Ed Reed will start at free safety.
They've already demoted Antonio Allen and kicked Dawan Landry over to his more natural strong safety position. Facing a Bills offense quarterbacked by E.J. Manuel and without both of its starting wide receivers, Reed isn't a bad bet for an interception in Week 11.

Thu Nov 14 201314:42Ed Reed will make Jets debut Sunday
New Jets S Ed Reed will be active for Sunday's game against the Bills, but will come off the bench.
It's quite possible Reed will remain No. 3 on the depth chart going forward, but he could push Antonio Allen if he improves on his poor play from Houston. That might not be possible for a player in steep decline, however. Reed's main contributions to the Jets are likely to be his leadership and intangibles. He's a shell of his former self on the field.

Thu Nov 14 201311:23Ed Reed reunites with Rex Ryan in New York
Jets agreed to terms with S Ed Reed.
Rex Ryan was the Ravens defensive coordinator from 2005-08 and hasn't been shy about lavishing Reed with praise ever since he left. However, Rex isn't getting the guy he knows from their Baltimore days. Reed is 35 years old, coming off hip surgery and was demoted to third string in Houston despite $6 million guaranteed in his contract. Still, the Jets are getting one of the game's premier leaders and a future Hall of Famer for pennies. Reed, who is expected to play against Buffalo this week, should at least be able to bolster the secondary by rotating with struggling Antonio Allen and allowing Dawan Landry to play some strong safety. It's a low-risk move for the 5-4 Jets.

Wed Nov 13 201321:01Report: Jets showing interest in S Ed Reed
ESPN New York's Rich Cimini reports the Jets are "indeed" showing interest in free agent FS Ed Reed.
The connection is obvious because Reed played under Rex Ryan for so many years in Baltimore, when Rex was the Ravens' defensive coordinator. The two are known to have a mutual admiration. Rumors earlier in the day had Jets GM John Idzik averse to a Rex-Reed reunion, but perhaps Idzik has softened his stance. FS Dawan Landry has played well this year, but is best suited to play strong safety and SS Antonio Allen has struggled, particularly in coverage. Signing Reed to play center field could allow the Jets to kick Landry back to his natural strong safety position.

Wed Nov 13 201316:19Ed Reed goes unclaimed on waivers
Ed Reed went unclaimed on waivers and is now a free agent.
As expected. Any claiming team would've been on the hook for $412,000, plus $62,500 for each game Reed was active. Coach Rex Ryan expressed some interest in maybe bring Reed to the Jets. He discussed the matter with GM John Idzik. Jets beat writers got the sense Ryan was in, while Idzik wasn't on board.

Wed Nov 13 201308:57Texans thought Ed Reed had lost his speed
The Texans reportedly thought Ed Reed lost his speed following an April 30 hip scope.
A slow safety is a safety without a job. Reed, now 35 years old, was also battling knee issues as he sunk to the third string with the Texans. They got 14 unassisted tackles for their $5.4375 million, or $388,257 per tackle. Reed is expected to clear waivers Wednesday afternoon and will then likely have to sign for something close to the veteran minimum to stay in the league.

Tue Nov 12 201313:51Report: Ravens have no plans to claim Ed Reed
Profootballtalk reports the Ravens have no plans to claim Ed Reed off waivers.
It's hardly surprising, as the Ravens had no interest in re-signing Reed after he hit the open market last offseason. Per ESPN Boston, any claiming team would be on the hook for $412,000, plus $62,500 for each game Reed is active. That's a prohibitive sum of money for a player whose play has fallen off the face of the planet. Reed should find a new home, but it likely won't be on his current contract. He'll officially become a free agent on Wednesday.

Thu Nov 7 201316:07Ed Reed demoted to third-safety duties
Ed Reed is now running as the Texans' third safety.
Reed has fallen behind Shiloh Keo on the depth chart, playing just 32 snaps to Keo's 49 in Week 9. Rookie D.J. Swearinger played 63 snaps. Interim coach Wade Phillips has refused to say Reed has officially been benched, instead claiming his use "depends upon how offenses are set up." Reed has been a colossal bust in the first season of his three-year deal, and with no guaranteed money remaining on his contract, will be a candidate for release in the offseason.

Thu Oct 10 201318:10Ed Reed 'nicked up' MCL vs. San Francisco
Ed Reed says he isn't "near where he wants to be physically," and that he "nicked up" his MCL in Sunday's loss to the 49ers.
That sounds concerning, but Reed has been limited in this week's practices, and appears ready to suit up for Week 6 against the Rams. He just won't be anywhere near 100 percent. With 136 snaps under his belt, Reed has graded out as the No. 35 safety in Pro Football Focus' ratings.
