Thu Apr 17 201417:48Rusty Smith works out for the Saints
Free agent QB Rusty Smith worked out for the Saints.
The Saints have already re-signed backup QB Luke McCown, so Smith would just be a camp body. A 2010 sixth-rounder, Smith has attempted only 45 regular-season passes, posting a 29.3 QB rating in the process.

Wed Nov 20 201309:47Rusty Smith still the backup to Fitzpatrick
Rusty Smith will remain the No. 2 quarterback despite the addition of John Skelton.
Skelton was signed as mere insurance just in case one of Ryan Fitzpatrick or Smith go down. It's perhaps the least talented quarterback room in the entire NFL right now.

Titans will sign QB Rusty Smith off their practice squad.
Instead of signing veteran David Carr, the Titans are going to keep it in-house while Jake Locker (hip, knee) is sidelined. Smith, a 2010 sixth-round pick, does have one NFL start under his belt. He went 17-of-31 for 138 yards with no touchdowns and three picks in a loss at Houston as a rookie.

The Titans will roll with only Ryan Fitzpatrick behind Jake Locker. During three seasons in Tennessee, Smith appeared in three games. He did make one start make in 2010, going 17-of-31 for 138 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions as part of an ugly loss in Houston.

Sat Jun 9 201211:04Smith ahead of Stephens for No. 3 QB role
According to OC Chris Palmer, Rusty Smith is ahead of Nick Stephens for the team's No. 3 quarterback job.
"Right now Rusty is ahead of him because he has been in the offense a bit," Palmer said. With all eyes on the Jake Locker/Matt Hasselbeck competition, Smith and Stephens are competing for one job. Smith, a 2010 sixth-round pick, has the leg up on Stephens, who went undrafted this past April.

Fri Jun 3 201111:55Heimerdinger, QB Smith had rocky relationship
Titans backup QB Rusty Smith admits his relationship with former offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger was on the rocks by the end of last season.
Heimerdinger had no use for Smith after a brutal 17-of-31, 138-yard, 3-INT performance in a shutout loss to the Texans. The two had a "verbal confrontation" that day, and Smith closed out the season in the doghouse. We have to admit to throwing in the towel on Smith after that performance. We can't fault Heimerdinger for doing the same.

Tue Apr 26 201112:01Rusty Smith doesn't have a playbook yet
Titans QB Rusty Smith revealed Tuesday that he has yet to receive a playbook from new offensive coordinator Chris Palmer.
Smith showed up at Titans headquarters hoping for one, but NFL teams have been instructed to not hand out playbooks. "I was going to try to get a little bit of the offense, since we were allowed to show," said Smith. "I do not have a playbook. It is somewhat frustrating. They did answer questions for us. And I got to go in and get something out of my locker, which was nice."

Tue Apr 12 201115:00Titans unlikely to deal up in the draft
The Nashville Tennessean believes the Titans are more likely to trade down than trade up in next week's NFL Draft.
The Denver Post mentioned the Titans one team that could deal into the Broncos' No. 2 spot to draft a quarterback. Tennessee has too many needs to give up an early-round pick, though. More importantly, it's going to take a tremendous leap of faith to select Blaine Gabbert with the second overall pick.

Sat Apr 2 201109:33Rusty Smith lobbies for Titans job
Rusty Smith is lobbying to be the Titans' starting quarterback next season.
"I think the coaching staff knows what I can do and that I'm still here and working hard," he said. Technically, Smith currently is the starter by virtue of being the only QB on Tennessee's roster. Obviously he won't be in 2011, but has been working out with tight ends Craig Stevens and Jared Cook this offseason, and is expecting to do some passing drills with some of his wideouts in the near future.

Sat Feb 19 201121:55Munchak praises Rusty Smith
Titans HC Mike Munchak "spoke highly" of QB Rusty Smith on Saturday.
Smith has apparently "been in (the) building every day since season's end." He's clearly a hard worker, but the Titans would likely resort to keeping Vince Young before naming the raw Smith as their 2011 starter. He's a long way away from being fantasy relevant.

Sun Dec 5 201012:15Smith now behind Simms
Rusty Smith is the emergency No. 3 quarterback for the Titans Sunday, behind newly signed Chris Simms.
This should tell you what the Titans thought of Smith's start last week. Smith's 138 yards and three interceptions against the Texans' lowly defense is a major blow to his career path.

Sun Nov 28 201017:21Rusty Smith throws 3 picks in shutout loss
Making his first career start, Rusty Smith completed 17-of-31 passes for 138 yards and three interceptions in Week 12 shutout loss to the Texans.
Smith didn't get much help from his drop-prone receivers, but that doesn't excuse a brutal performance that made the league's worst pass defense look stellar. The Titans offense managed just three first downs before the fourth quarter, and the majority of Smith's output came on two garbage-time drives late in the game. The Titans had a chance to score inside the 10-yard line, but Smith was picked by Glover Quin for a Texans' record third time. The Titans hope to have Kerry Collins back for next week's game against the Jags.
Sun Aug 15 201011:44Rusty Smith shaky in his debut
Titans rookie QB Rusty Smith finished 7-of-14 for 71 yards with an interception in Saturday's preseason opener against the Seahawks.
Rusty played up to his name, making some ill-advised throws, but all indications out of camp are that Smith and his rocket arm are the real deal. Offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger, "You have to throw him out there and watch him under fire when we are not in the huddle with him." Smith is competing with Chris Simms for the No. 3 QB job, but might be ticketed for the practice squad.

Mon Jul 19 201008:37Titans raving about Rusty Smith
Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger called rookie QB Rusty Smith's vision "amazing."
The Titans appear happy with Smith so far as a long-term developmental project. It remains very unclear if both Kerry Collins and Chris Simms will make the roster behind Vince Young, so Smith could end up as the No. 3 quarterback this year. Still, the Titans ideally probably want to sneak him onto the practice squad.

The Sun Belt Player of the Year in 2007 at Florida Atlantic, Smith struggled with accuracy and a shoulder injury the next two seasons. He's a long-term developmental project and will likely be ticketed for the practice squad as a rookie.
