Tue Sep 1 201511:47Pitta (hip) placed on regular-season PUP list Tuesday
Pitta (hip) was placed on the regular-season PUP list Tuesday.
As expected, Pitta will be ineligible for the first six games of the season. He's still rehabbing from a second major hip surgery in two years, and he may eventually opt for retirement. Even if he's cleared to play, Pitta will have a tough decision to make, as the Ravens have suggested multiple times that he'll have an elevated risk for future hip injuries. Having already cashed in with a big contract last offseason, he may opt for the path that's best for his long-term health. Furthermore, Pitta could have other career options with the Ravens, as he's popular within the organization and close friends with the starting quarterback.

Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that Pitta (hip) is not a candidate to play at the start of the season, Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Pitta will likely remain on the PUP list at the start of the season, though there's also some chance he winds up on injured reserve. A mid-season return represents his best-case scenario, and it's still quite possible he'll be forced to retire. Crockett Gillmore is expected to start at tight end, with rookie Maxx Williams likely also handling a significant role.

Pitta (hip) still hasn't been cleared to practice, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Pitta was placed on the PUP list at the start of training camp and will likely remain there for the first six games of the regular season. He may still be forced into early retirement, but he's been attending position meetings and watching practice in hopes of playing at some point this season.
Fri Jul 24 201517:22Dennis Pitta: (Hip) Placed On PUP List
Pitta (hip) was placed on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list on Friday, Adam Caplan of ESPN reports.
This was expected, as Pitta continues to be banged up and won't be active in both training camp and preseason, and he also is not expected to play at the start of the regular season. If Pitta is officially ruled out for the first six games of the regular season, look for both Crockett Gillmore, who appeared in 15 games for Baltimore last season, and second-round pick Maxx Williams, who may have more upside as a pass catcher, to fill in at the tight end position.

Pitta (hip) will likely be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list for training camp and the start of the regular season, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Pitta did some individual drills throughout offseason workouts, but he still hasn't been cleared for contact. There's little question that he'll open training camp on the PUP list, and the Ravens apparently expect him to remain there for the start of the season, which would rule him out for the first six games. Even if he does eventually make it back onto the field, Pitta may be limited to a part-time role. Crockett Gillmore is the favorite to start for the Ravens at in-line tight end, but second-round draft pick Maxx Williams might still see more targets in a slot/move role.
Tue Jun 16 201518:31Dennis Pitt: (Hip) Not Cleared To Practice Yet
Pitta (hip) hasn't received clearance to practice, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Hence, the reason Pitta isn't taking part in the initial minicamp practice Tuesday. He's already participated in individual drills throughout OTAs, though, so he is making a semblance of progress in his recovery from his second dislocated right hip. On the other hand, there's no telling if he'll be able to handle contact when training camp starts in late July.

Pitta (hip) took part in individual drills at OTAs on Thursday, CSN Mid-Atlantic's Bo Smolka reports.
The Ravens have generally expressed optimism regarding Pitta potentially resuming his career, but the team has also acknowledged the possibility he won't play again, and TE Maxx Williams was recently drafted in the second round. While there probably won't be anything approaching certainty until the season draws closer, it does seem that Pitta's recovery is progressing as expected. Even with Williams expected to assume a significant role, the Ravens could certainly use Pitta's help, given the lack of proven veteran receiving options on the roster.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that Pitta (hip) "has a chance" at playing in 2015, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Harbaugh acknowledged that Pitta is currently practicing, and the team is now just seeing how he holds up during those sessions before assessing his ability for the upcoming season. The Ravens drafted Maxx Williams in the second round of the NFL Draft, but adding Pitta back into the tight-end ranks would give the Ravens a needed extra weapon in the passing game after the team lost Torrey Smith in free agency.

Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said Saturday that he is still not sure what will happen with Pitta (hip), the Baltimore Sun reports.
While Pitta has reportedly made progress in his rehab from a career-threatening hip injury, Baltimore's decision to select TE Maxx Williams in the second round indicates that the team isn't counting on Pitta's availability. The Ravens also selected TE Nick Boyle out of Delaware in the fifth round, and they used a third-round pick on TE Crockett Gillmore last year. Pitta's health situation probably won't be resolved anytime soon, and even if he ends up playing again, he'll be at added risk of reinjuring his problematic hip.

Pitta (hip) has been able to participate in the Ravens' voluntary conditioning program, which started Monday, the Baltimore Sun reports.
That said, it remains to be seen if Pitta, whose 2014 season ended with a major hip injury, will be able to play this season and it probably won't be until sometime this summer that there will be added clarity on that front.

The Ravens probably won't know more about Pitta's (hip) status until this summer, baltimoreravens.com reports.
Pitta is hoping to return from his second hip dislocation in two years, and while both he and the team have thus far expressed optimism, it's no secret that Pitta may not play again. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti recently suggested that Crockett Gillmore could be the team's primary in-line tight end, adding that he hopes the Ravens can find another move/flex tight end in the middle rounds of the draft. That actually makes a lot of sense, as the Ravens just gave Pitta a five-year contract last offseason, but it's now clear the team needs some form of insurance.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh is "cautiously optimistic" that Pitta (hip) will be able to play in 2015.
Based on Harbaugh's words over the past few months, it sounds as if everything has gone as well as possible for Pitta, who dislocated his right hip for a second consecutive season. Of course, the optimism shouldn't be mistaken for certainty, as there is still some chance that the injury forces Pitta into retirement. It's also believed that the tight end will be at greater risk of re-injuring his hip for a third time, if he continues his playing career. The Ravens certainly want Pitta back, after signing him to a five-year contract that runs through 2018 and includes $16 million in guaranteed money. 2015 would be his sixth NFL season, but Pitta will already be 30 years old by the time training camp starts.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Monday that Pitta (hip) will likely be able to play again, assuming the tight end's hip fully heals, the Ravens' official website reports. "Everything I've been told...and I've got to be honest, it was surprising to me because my assumption would be, Wow, this is twice in a row. This is going to be tough,'" Harbaugh said. "But they say it has no bearing on the future. If it heals 100 percent, Dennis can play again.
After Pitta dislocated his right hip for a second consecutive season, there was some concern that he'd never be able to play again, even if he made a full recovery. It sounds like his doctors now believe the hip is structurally okay, making Pitta a candidate to be ready for training camp 2015. The tight end is worth holding on to in some dynasty leagues, as he's seen no shortage of targets when healthy over the past three years.
Wed Dec 3 201412:43Pitta (hip) began walking without crutches Monday
Pitta (hip) began walking without crutches Monday, Ryan Mink of the Ravens' official website reports.
Pitta is out for the rest of this season, as the real question is whether he'll ever be able to play again. He dislocated the same hip in consecutive seasons, and it's uncertain whether the hip will be able to hold up in the future. As one of Joe Flacco's favorite targets when healthy, Pitta still holds some appeal in dynasty leagues, due in part to the current lack of appealing fantasy options at tight end.

Pitta (hip) said Monday that doctors are not yet sure whether he'll be able to play again, The Baltimore Sun reports.
Following a second hip dislocation in two years, Pitta is headed for a lengthy rehabilitation process that won't necessary allow him to play again. Doctors still need to see how the hip heals to determine whether it might hold up through the rigors of the NFL. If he's able to play again, Pitta will likely carry added injury risk.

Pitta (hip) implied that he isn't yet sure whether his injury might be career-ending, WBAL 1090 reports. "I'm going to do everything I can in my rehab in trying to get better to get back on the field," Pitta said. "That's how I'm going to approach it and try to get back to full strength. When we get to that point, we'll see where I'm at and be able to make those decisions. Right now for me, it's just focus on getting healthy and getting back to where I need to be."
A second hip dislocation in two years has led to speculation that Pitta may not play again. According to an earlier report from The Baltimore Sun, Pitta will carry added risk of suffering a third dislocation if he makes it back to the field next season. He's facing a long rehab process and won't have to make a decision anytime soon.
Tue Sep 23 201417:00Pitta (hip) placed on injured reserve Tuesday
Pitta (hip) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.
Tuesday's move was primarily procedural, as Pitta was ruled out for the season a day earlier. Phillip Supernaw was promoted from the practice squad to take Pitta's place on the roster.

Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that Pitta underwent hip surgery and is out for season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
With Pitta out of the Ravens' tight end mix, veteran Owen Daniels is in line to see added responsibilities in the Ravens' passing offense, while rookie tight end Crockett Gillmore and fullback Kyle Juszczyk (who can also play TE) are candidates to see added opportunities going forward, as well.
Mon Sep 22 201416:53Pitta slated to undergo surgery to repair damage in right hip
Pitta is slated to undergo surgery to repair damage in his right hip, which he dislocated Sunday, the Baltimore Sun reports.
The report adds that Pitta -- who dislocated his right hip last season as well -- also likely suffered a fracture Sunday, a situation that could well end his season, and possibly jeopardize his career. In Pitta's absence, look for veteran Owen Daniels to see added responsibilities in the Ravens' offense, with rookie tight end Crockett Gillmore and fullback Kyle Juszczyk (who can play TE) also candidates to see added looks going forward.

Pitta (hip) suffered a dislocated hip and will remain in the hospital overnight, the Baltimore Sun reports.
Pitta suffered the injury during Sunday's game and was carted off the field in the second quarter. It's the second time he's dislocated the hip, which could further extend his absence. "A second fracture and dislocation to the same hip is relatively rare," said an orthopedic surgical specialist cited in the Baltimore Sun's report. "This is a significant trauma. It's very concerning. It doesn't bode well for his career. Even to do this one time is unusual, but twice is very bad." The Ravens have not provided a prognosis at this point, but Pitta will surely miss multiple weeks, and it's possible the injury could end his season. He'll undergo an MRI this week to determine if any ligaments are damaged, in addition to the dislocation. Pitta ranks second on the team in receiving this season, catching 16 passes for 125 yards.
