Mon Mar 24 201414:21Greg McElroy joins SEC Network
Retired QB Greg McElroy has accepted a job with the SEC Network.
It's a natural fit for the ex-Jets and Bengals quarterback, who is better suited to talk about football at this stage in his career than play it. Charasmatic with an impressive football mind, McElroy just didn't have the size or arm to succeed at the NFL level.

Fri Mar 21 201409:50Bengals QB Greg McElroy announces retirement
Bengals QB Greg McElroy has retired from the NFL.
McElroy, 26 in May, was a decorated high school and college star but never really stood a chance in the NFL. He was a seventh-round pick of the Jets in 2011 and made one start -- a Week 16 loss to the Chargers in 2012. McElroy signed a futures deal with the Bengals in January. He may look to coaching or politics.

Tue Jan 7 201417:24Bengals sign QB Greg McElroy
Bengals signed QB Greg McElroy to a reserve/future contract.
The former Alabama Crimson Tide star spent 2013 stashed away on the Bengals' practice squad. McElroy is a beloved teammate who's lauded for his football intellect, but simply doesn't have an NFL skill-set. He's unlikely to earn a spot on the Bengals' 2014 53-man roster.

Mon Sep 2 201314:02Greg McElroy joins Bengals' practice squad
Bengals signed QB Greg McElroy to the practice squad.
Waived/injured by the Jets last week, McElroy was released with an injury settlement on Monday, clearing his path to Cincinnati's taxi squad. McElroy is lauded for his intangibles and leadership, but doesn't have an NFL skill-set. He'll likely be working in T.V. within the next 18 months.

Sat Aug 31 201313:59Greg McElroy's injury costs him roster spot
Jets released QB Greg McElroy.
McElroy's fate was sealed when he sustained a mild knee sprain in practice ahead of the preseason finale. That allowed Matt Simms to step up and seize the No. 3 job with a 33-of-44 for 285 yards performance against the Eagles on Thursday night.

Wed Aug 28 201311:08Greg McElroy injures his knee in practice
A source tells the New York Post that Jets QB Greg McElroy injured his knee in practice this week.
McElroy's injury caused the flailing Jets to sign Graham Harrell. Mark Sanchez (shoulder) won't play in the preseason finale and Geno Smith can't play because the Jets might need him for Week 1. McElroy's injury could doom his chances of sticking on the final roster. Matt Simms is expected to start Thursday.

Thu May 30 201314:12McElroy fighting for roster spot
Jets QB Greg McElroy has fallen to No. 4 on the depth chart and is battling for a roster spot.
McElroy has been working with fourth-team in OTAs and has fallen behind Matt Simms, who has been taking all the third-team reps for the second consecutive week. While we caution not to look too much into snap counts during OTAs, it's not a good sign for McElroy's future with the team.

Thu Dec 27 201220:13McElroy contemplated hiding concussion
Greg McElroy tried to hide his concussion from the coaches and medical staff.
McElroy suffered the brain injury in last week's loss to the Chargers and wrestled with the decision to alert the higher-ups for days before finally doing so on Thursday morning. McElroy talked with teammates WR Clyde Gates and LG Matt Slauson before alerting head coach Rex Ryan. McElroy is probably one of the smarter players in the entire league, but he grappled with the same issue every NFL player debates throughout the season. He knew he had an opportunity to start another game, while he also knows he may never get another chance to do so again in his career. McElroy ended up doing the right thing for his long-term health, but it shows us what goes on behind the scenes on a daily basis in the NFL.

Thu Dec 27 201211:58Greg McElroy sidelined by concussion
Greg McElroy (concussion) will not play in Sunday's game against the Bills.
McElroy was feeling headaches after last week's loss to the Chargers, but didn't tell the coaches or medical staff. It came to a head Thursday morning when he was still feeling headaches while lifting weights. At that point, the Jets took him for concussion testing and he's been ruled out for the finale. Mark Sanchez will start against the Bills and Tim Tebow will be the backup.

Wed Dec 26 201213:54McElroy practicing through abdomen injury
Greg McElroy is on the Week 17 injury report with an abdomen injury, but is practicing in full.
The "full" designation suggests McElroy will still start Sunday's finale against the Bills, but he'll likely be on a short leash. Expect one more weekend of continuous sideline shots of backups Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow.

Tue Dec 18 201214:57Jets confirm McElroy as starter vs. Chargers
Jets announced Greg McElroy as the Week 16 starter versus the Chargers.
The coaching staff was reportedly concerned with the potential fallout from passing over Tim Tebow, but they decided to stick with football over publicity. One option discussed was splitting duties between the two quarterbacks, with McElroy starting but Tebow mixed in more liberally in zone-read/Wildcat looks. Even without the threat of Tebow stealing snaps, McElroy isn't a fantasy option in the Jets' talent-starved run-heavy offense.

Tue Dec 18 201214:14Reports: Rex 'leaning toward' McElroy at QB
Coach Rex Ryan is reportedly "leaning toward" starting Greg McElroy versus the Chargers in Week 16.
ESPN New York and the New York Post came out with similarly-worded reports on Ryan's "leanings" within seconds of each other. Although Tim Tebow did get an entire offensive series to himself Monday night, the actions of the Jets coaching staff has made it abundantly clear that they don't view him as more than a gadget player and special teamer. One of the options on the table is to split duties between McElroy and Tebow. In which case, neither QB is worth adding except in the deepest of two-quarterback leagues.

Sun Dec 2 201216:07Greg McElroy throws game-winning touchdown
Relieving Mark Sanchez with roughly three minutes left in the third quarter of Week 13, Greg McElroy came on to complete 5-of-7 passes for 29 yards and a touchdown as the Jets downed the Cardinals, 7-6.
McElroy rolled right off boot-action to find TE Jeff Cumberland wide open in the end zone on what ultimately proved the game-winning score. McElroy isn't much of an athlete and lacks arm strength to throw the ball downfield, but it's fair to wonder if he'd be a better option than Sanchez to manage games going forward. We'd still bet on Rex Ryan going back to Sanchez for Week 14 at Jacksonville.

Sun Sep 2 201212:42McElroy no threat to Tebow as No. 2 QB
ESPN New York's Rich Cimini called the idea that Greg McElroy would start if Mark Sanchez were to get injured a "non-story".
"Case closed," added the reputable Cimini, who pointed out that coach Rex Ryan made it clear that there's "no way" McElroy would get the nod over Tim Tebow. McElroy had a strong preseason, but the 2011 seventh-round pick has yet to take an NFL snap. He'll spend the season as a developmental third quarterback.

Tue Feb 28 201217:21Jets GM: McElroy's roster spot is safe
Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum confirmed that QB Greg McElroy will be back with the team this season.
McElroy's roster spot is safe after "angering" coach Rex Ryan with public comments about a "corrupt mindset" with "extremely selfish individuals" in the locker room. "He'll learn his lesson," said Tannenbaum. "I'm glad he's on the team. We'll move forward with him."

Fri Feb 24 201212:06Rex Ryan 'angry' about McElroy's comments
Coach Rex Ryan made it clear that backup QB Greg McElroy's comments about a "corrupt mindset" with "extremely selfish individuals" in the locker room didn't sit well with the team's brass.
"I was angry about it," Ryan said. "I never agreed with all the statements he made. ... Our football team is a little closer than people give us credit for." Asked if the Jets were focused on upgrading to a quarterback who will push Mark Sanchez, Ryan quipped, "Well, with McElroy's comments, absolutely."

Tue Jan 24 201210:36McElroy expected to be 'in the mix' in 2012
ESPN New York expects the Jets to keep QB Greg McElroy "in the mix" in 2012.
McElroy spent all of 2011 on injured reserve and created a stir earlier this month when he called the Jets' locker room "not a fun place to be," but will apparently get another shot at locking down New York's third-string job. The Jets are still expected to sign a veteran free agent to back-up Mark Sanchez. That is, if they don't acquire Peyton Manning.

Wed Jan 4 201215:58McElroy: Jets locker room 'not a fun place'
Third-string QB Greg McElroy spoke out the Jets' 2011 locker room Wednesday, calling it "not a fun place to be."
"(There) were people within our locker room that didn't care whether we won or lost, as long as they got their...they really had good games individually," McElroy said. "That's the disappointing thing, and it's going to take a lot to kind of come together." McElroy's analysis is likely spot on, but it's fair to wonder if it will land him in coach Rex Ryan's doghouse. By nearly all accounts, Ryan enabled the more fractious members of his locker room this season. A seventh-round pick last spring, McElroy has three years left on his rookie deal after spending 2011 on injured reserve.

Mon Jan 2 201219:51McElroy expects to be healthy by February 1
Jets rookie QB Greg McElroy expects to be fully recovered from his fractured thumb by February 1.
After a surprisingly effective preseason, McElroy spent his rookie year on I.R. with the thumb fracture, which required surgery. He restarted throwing in November, but suffered a setback. In four 2011 exhibition games, McElroy went a combined 36-of-59 for 335 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He will likely be the Jets' third-string quarterback in 2012.
