Sat Oct 10 2015 | 14:45 | Steve Johnson: Ruled out for Week 5 |
Johnson (hamstring) has been ruled out for Monday's game against the Steelers. |
Johnson was not able to practice this week after injuring his hamstring last Sunday, so he will be unable to take the field in Week 5. Fellow receivers Malcom Floyd (concussion) and Jacoby Jones (ankle) are listed as questionable, so it remains to be seen who will be lining up across from Keenan Allen when Sunday's game kicks off. |

Johnson (hamstring) did not practice Friday. |
More on Johnson's status Saturday, but unless he returns to practice -- and looks good in doing so -- he looks like a risky Week 5 play, given the Chargers' Monday night kickoff against the Steelers. |

Johnson (hamstring) did not practice Thursday. |
Johnson, who left Week 4's win over the Browns with a hamstring injury, is thus looking iffy for Monday night's game against the Steelers, though his Week 5 outlook could brighten in the next couple of days if he is able to return to the practice field in that span. |

Johnson, who left Sunday's win over the Browns with a hamstring injury, was not spotted during the media access portion of Wednesday's practice, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. |
More on Johnson's Week 5 status Thursday, once the Chargers' first official injury report in advance of Monday's game against the Steelers is released. At this stage though, the wideout's status for the game is a little cloudy. |

Johnson suffered an apparent left hamstring injury Sunday against the Browns. |
With Malcom Floyd having sustained a concussion earlier in the game and Jacoby Jones inactive, if Johnson can't return to action, Keenan Allen and Dontrelle Inman would be Chargers' only healthy wideouts Sunday. |

Johnson had three receptions on five targets for 46 yards in Sunday's loss at Minnesota. |
The three grabs were the lowest of the season so far for Johnson, who also failed to get in the endzone for the first time this year. Johnson fits nicely in the San Diego offense, but Keenan Allen remains the top dog on this team, so his upside is somewhat limited. |

Johnson might see more looks than usual with Ladarius Green inactive Sunday at Minnesota. |
Johnson has been having a good season already, and with the Bolts down to John Phillips, Kyle Miller, and David Johnson at tight end, they might go with more three-wide receiver sets than usual today. |

Johnson had five receptions on six targets for 45 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss at Cincinnati. |
Johnson is very quickly becoming a big part of the San Diego passing attack as he has already caught 11 out of 12 targets and has scored a touchdown in both games this season. Johnson should continue to be a solid option going forward as Philip Rivers continues to gain more and more confidence in his new slot man, especially in PPR formats. |

Johnson caught all six of his targets for 82 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 33-28 win over Detroit. |
Johnson was held in check during the first half, before making a couple of big plays in the second half, including a 34-yard catch and 12-yard touchdown. Meanwhile, Keenan Allen exploded for a career-high 15 receptions (17 targets) for 166 yards. Despite Allen's monster game, it was a solid debut for Johnson, who could be a sneaky option in PPR leagues, playing with the best QB of his career in Philip Rivers. |

Johnson caught four passes (six targets) for 63 yards in Saturday's preseason game against the Seahawks. |
Though he's still No. 3 on the depth chart, Johnson should benefit significantly from his improved team context, after spending a year with the run-heavy 49ers. Not only do the Chargers make heavy use of three-wide formations, but also TE Antonio Gates is suspended for the first four games, likely freeing up some extra snaps and targets for Johnson out of the slot. Eddie Royal, the Chargers' slot receiver last season, put up a 62-778-7 receiving line on 91 targets, even with Gates playing a full 16 games. |
Sun Jul 5 2015 | 20:49 | there should be plenty of slot snaps available for Johnson |
With Antonio Gates suspended for the first four games of the season, there should be plenty of slot snaps available for Johnson, NBC San Diego reports. |
Antonio Gates and Eddie Royal were the Chargers' main slot threats last season, with Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd doing most of the work on the outside. Royal jumped ship to sign with the Bears, and Gates was talking about a reduced role even before he was suspended. Johnson is unlikely to match his production from the days when he was Buffalo's go-to option, but this is the best situation he's been in since 2012. He'll get most of the slot snaps in three-wide sets, and he also has the size to work outside. |
Wed Jun 3 2015 | 12:47 | Johnson looking explosive in camp |
Johnson, who sat out three games for the 49ers last December with a bad knee, is looking explosive in camp, the San Diego Union Tribune reports. |
Johnson is said to be shaking loose from defenders with sudden zig zag moves and has caught a few red zone passes from Philip Rivers. Needless to say, being able to make quick change of direction moves while getting comfortable with Rivers is a great sign for Johnson. At worst, he will be a solid number three receiver in San Diego, but he has an outside chance to push Malcolm Floyd for starting time opposite Keenan Allen this season. |
Tue Mar 17 2015 | 11:06 | Steve Johnson: Signs With Chargers For 3 Years |
Johnson is signing a three-year contract with the Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. |
Johnson won't be the No. 1 wide receiver like he was back in Buffalo, but he should have a better opportunity than the one he got in San Francisco last season. At the very least, he'll be the No. 3 wide receiver for an offense that just allowed Eddie Royal to produce a 62-778-7 receiving line in that role. Johnson also has plenty of experience working on the outside, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him push Malcom Floyd for playing time in two-wide sets. |
Tue Mar 17 2015 | 10:45 | Steve Johnson: Expected To Sign With Chargers |
Johnson is expected to sign with the Chargers, NBC's Diane Marie Russini reports. |
Johnson would certainly fill a need for San Diego, as the team is left thin at wide receiver in the wake of Eddie Royal's departure for Chicago. At the very least, Johnson would be the Chargers' No. 3 wideout, and he'd likely push Malcom Floyd for snaps in two-wide formations. This is one of the better scenarios for Johnson to rehab his fantasy value, following a year spent as the No. 3 wide receiver in a balanced offense. |
Wed Mar 11 2015 | 10:19 | The 49ers will officially cut Johnson on Wednesday |
The 49ers will officially cut Johnson on Wednesday, the National Football Post reports. |
There were rumblings over the weekend that Johnson was expected to be released, and it appears Tuesday's signing of Torrey Smith to a long-term deal will consummate the move. Johnson, who caught 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the 49ers, will likely still receive plenty of interest around the league, but perhaps not in the starting role he desires. |
Sat Feb 28 2015 | 12:54 | Updating previous report |
Updating a previous report, CSN Bay Area reports that Johnson is not expected to be released imminently, though his standing on the San Francisco roster is unclear. |
The previous report implied that Johnson would be released in the near future, but for now it apparently remains no more than a consideration for the 49ers, who aren't sure what to make of Johnson and his $6.025 million salary. Since the 49ers acquired Johnson in a trade, cutting him would carry no penalty, but perhaps the organization is loathe to cut an asset that cost a fourth-round pick just one year ago. |

Johnson is expected to be released by the 49ers, Diana Russini of NBC reports. |
Johnson was a bit of a bust in San Francisco, finishing the 2014 season with 435 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He'll hit free agency as the 49ers looked to clear some cap room. |

Johnson had a disappointing debut with the 49ers in 2014, finishing with 435 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games. |
Johnson was brought in during the offseason to add more playmaking ability to a slow 49ers' receiving corps. But he failed to do that, being used primarily as a safety valve for Colin Kaepernick for the majority of the season. He is under contract through 2017, so maybe a new coaching regime will find a way to incorporate the former fantasy stud. |

Johnson (knee) is out for Sunday's game against Seattle. |
With the 49ers offense a mess and the matchup highly unfavorable, Johnson wasn't in a position to capitalize in this game, anyway. |
