Sun Dec 11 201116:43Thomas Jones typically ineffective
Thomas Jones rushed five times for 12 yards in Kansas City's Week 14 loss to the Jets.
He was held without a catch. Jones was de-emphasized in favor of Jackie Battle, who managed only 33 yards on 10 carries. With the Chiefs lacking any coherent order in their backfield for weeks now, it's a situation to avoid in all formats for the duration of the fantasy playoffs.

Sun Dec 4 201117:31Thomas Jones wheezes to 36 yards
Thomas Jones rushed 16 times for 36 yards in Sunday's win over the Bears.
A typically wheezing effort from Jones, who is now averaging an abysmal 3.04 yards on his 107 carries this season. As has become the norm in the Chiefs backfield, Jones, Dexter McCluster and Jackie Battle were more-or-less used in a "hot hand" rotation today, with each receiving at least nine carries and never "taking over" for any prolonged stretch. Unless you're a McCluster owner in a deeper PPR format, it's a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues.

Mon Nov 28 201100:14Thomas Jones leads Chiefs' 'rushing attack'
Thomas Jones "led" the Chiefs with 13 carries for 37 yards in Sunday's loss to the Steelers.
He added one catch for seven yards. For the second straight week, Kansas City's carries were divided almost evenly between Jones, Jackie Battle and Dexter McCluster, who all took the rock at least nine times. There was no clear rotation, with coach Todd Haley seemingly going with whoever was the freshest. With the trio combining to average just 2.7 yards on 31 carries, it remains a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues next weekend against a Bears team that bottled up Michael Bush Sunday.

Tue Nov 22 201100:31Thomas Jones rushes for 39 yards vs. NE
Thomas Jones rushed the ball eight times for 48 yards in the Chiefs' Week 11 loss to the Patriots.
Jones, Dexter McCluster, and Jackie Battle each rushed the ball eight times, as Jones' touches came at the expense of Battle. Jones has better vision and a bit more "burst" than Battle, but we're comparing different junker cars at this point. Outside of PPR leagues in which McCluster would have minimal value, this is a backfield to be avoided like the plague.

Tue Nov 1 201101:57Jones held to 10 yards on just five carries
Thomas Jones was held to 10 yards on five carries in Monday's Week 8 win over the Chargers.
He and Jackie Battle form perhaps the slowest running back tandem in the history of the NFL, with Jones finally getting phased out of the game plan. Jones has been waiver wire fodder for some time.

Sun Oct 9 201118:53Thomas Jones gets 12 touches in Week 5
Thomas Jones rushed 10 times for 55 yards and caught two passes for seven yards in the Chiefs' Week 5 win.
Jones hit a couple of huge holes for solid gains, but was thoroughly outplayed by and received fewer touches than Jackie Battle. Jones' role figures to decrease in favor of Battle going forward. He's barely worth owning.

Sun Oct 2 201116:18Thomas Jones continues struggles in loss
Thomas Jones ran for just 37 yards on 11 carries in the Chiefs' Week 4 win over the Vikings.
It's interesting to note that special teamer Jackie Battle (5-22) got the carries late in clock-killing mode, with Jones essentially nowhere to be found. His tank on E, Jones is on pace for just 452 total yards, has not scored on the season, and is averaging a putrid 2.82 yards per touch. He won't be anything close to a fantasy option in Week 5 at Indianapolis.

Sun Sep 25 201119:47Thomas Jones struggles, as expected
Thomas Jones rushed 14 times for just 31 yards in Sunday's loss to the Chargers.
Jones added one catch for two yards. It was a predictably inept performance for Jones, who had averaged just 3.62 yards per carry over his previous 18 games coming into this one. And as the Chiefs fell behind, Jones lost the majority of his snaps to Dexter McCluster. The 33-year-old is nothing more than a desperation option for owners grasping at straws.

Sat Sep 24 201117:03Thomas Jones in line for steady carries
OC Bill Muir says the Chiefs plan to give Thomas Jones the ball "until his tongue is hanging out."
"We'll do whatever we've got to do to win the game," Muir said. "Wherever (Jones has) been, he's loved to carry the ball." With Dexter McCluster expected to be limited to 10-to-14 touches per game, Jones will shoulder the rest of the load. He has no upside, but is at least worth a flier in deeper leagues. Le'Ron McClain and Jackie Battle could eventually be in line for carries, but for now they're off the radar in even exceptionally deep formats.

Wed Sep 21 201114:01Chiefs to employ 'running back by committee'
The Chiefs' website refers to the team's backfield as a "running back by committee" situation following Jamaal Charles' torn ACL.
KCChiefs.com calls Thomas Jones, Dexter McCluster, Le'Ron McClain, and Jackie Battle all candidates for carries. Jones, now 33 years old, has 14 rushing attempts for 43 yards (3.07 YPC) through two games. McCluster will probably play the most snaps because Kansas City will so often be trailing. Aside from McCluster, it's a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues.

Wed Sep 21 201109:40Thomas Jones set to start, carry load for KC
The Chiefs' official site calls Thomas Jones the "best candidate for an increase in workload" following Jamaal Charles' season-ending knee injury.
Jones will be plugged in as the starter and leader of the Chiefs' new committee, but we don't have high hopes. He has averaged just 3.62 yards per carry over his last 18 games and was getting phased out of the offense prior to Charles' injury for a reason. Jones will be called upon to kill the clock if the Chiefs are sitting on a lead, but that doesn't figure to happen very often this season. Consider Jones a low-upside RB3 at best going forward.

Sun Sep 18 201116:28Thomas Jones goes for 40 yards in loss
Thomas Jones carried the ball 12 times for 40 yards in Week 2's blowout loss to the Lions.
Jones was actually rotating carries with Jamaal Charles and Dexter McCluster on the Chiefs' opening drive, but 10 of his totes came after Charles got knocked out of the game with a knee injury. Jones again displayed that he has little to no burst left, but with Charles appearing likely to miss at least a handful of games, he's a must add in all formats.

Fri Aug 26 201123:15Thomas Jones runs twice for four yards
Thomas Jones rushed twice for four yards in the Chiefs' third preseason game.
He's sitting on nine preseason carries for 44 yards, buoyed by a 17-yard scamper in the opener. (Jones is at 3.37 YPC aside from that run.) Most notable is that Jones hasn't made a start in August, consistently playing behind Jamaal Charles. Don't be surprised if Jones' 2010 carry total is chopped in half this year.

Mon Aug 22 201108:25Jones practices fully on Sunday
Thomas Jones practiced fully Sunday despite his reported locker room fight with rookie WR Jonathan Baldwin.
Baldwin is doubtful for the rest of the preseason with a wrist injury, but Jones emerged from the scuffle just fine. He is unlikely to face any discipline from the team as Baldwin was in the wrong by all accounts. Jones remains a low-end handcuff that figures to lose more and more carries to Jamaal Charles as the season goes on.

Tue Aug 9 201110:28Jones listed ahead of Charles on depth chart
Thomas Jones is listed ahead of Jamaal Charles on the Chiefs' initial depth chart.
Don't read too much into this. As the Kansas City Star points out, "the Chiefs almost always defer to the veteran in cases like this." Over the final eight weeks of last season, Charles recorded 117 carries while Jones got 108. With the veteran in steep decline and Charles proving himself as one of the best backs in the league, that gap will rise greatly. Jones is nothing more than a handcuff.

Wed Mar 23 201110:58Thomas Jones will return for a 12th season
Coach Todd Haley confirmed that Thomas Jones will return for a 12th season in 2011.
Jones suggested after the Chiefs' playoff loss that he would take some time to contemplate his future entering his age-33 season. Jones faded down the stretch for a second straight season, averaging a plodding 2.3 YPC over the final quarter of the season. He'll return in a similar role, though we expect Jamaal Charles' carries to increase at Jones' expense.

Sat Feb 26 201109:58Haley: Thomas Jones needs to drop weight
Chiefs coach Todd Haley has spoken to Thomas Jones about shedding weight this offseason in an effort to be quicker in 2011.
"I'd like to see him get down to 208, 209 pounds," said Haley. "Let him feel lighter and quicker." It's not going to work, but at least Haley is trying. Jones, who played last year at nearly 220 pounds, turns 33 before the season and has clearly lost several steps. Regardless of his weight, we don't see Jones cracking 4.0 yards per carry ever again.

Sun Jan 9 201116:48Thomas Jones held to 23 yards in loss
Thomas Jones was held to just 15 yards on five carries while adding one reception for eight yards against the Ravens in Sunday's Wild Card round loss.
Jones' failure to find the hole on a third-and-one play ended up being a key turning point in the Chiefs' loss. He took a backseat to feature back Jamaal Charles throughout the game. Jones is due $3 million in 2011, though the Chiefs will have to think twice about keeping him after he tailed off to the tune of 2.3 yards per carry over the last quarter of the season. He turns 33 in August.
Sun Jan 2 201116:16Thomas Jones held to just 17 yards rushing
Thomas Jones ran the ball 10 times for just 17 yards in the Week 17 loss to the Raiders.
He dominated the touches early on, but Jamaal Charles wound up with five more for the game and was, predictably, much more productive yet again. Jones averaged under 2.3 YPC over the last quarter of the season, as his age might be catching up to him following a nice start to the year. The Chiefs have to give Charles the majority of touches at running back if they want to advance in the playoffs.
Sun Dec 26 201017:20Thomas Jones pounds out 51 yards
Thomas Jones rushed 23 times for just 51 yards against the Titans in Week 16.
In a role reversal, Jones took a pitch inside the 5-yard line only to be vultured by Jamaal Charles on the next play. The Chiefs continue to use Jones as the between-the- tackles pile-driver to soften up defenses for Charles' big-play ability. With two more fumbles and a third consecutive game under 3.0 yards per carry, Jones is struggling to the finish line once again.
