Tue May 5 201514:25John Carlson: Announces Retirement
Carlson announced his retirement Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
The 30-year-old Carlson has a history of concussions, and he never lived up to the promise of his first two seasons. He averaged a 53-600-6 receiving line with the Seahawks in his first two years, but he has since failed to top 350 receiving yards in any one season. With the former second-round draft pick out of the picture, Arizona's shaky depth chart at tight end looks all the more questionable. 2014 second-round selection Troy Niklas is the favorite to start, despite catching just three passes in seven games as a rookie. While athletic for his size (6-6, 270 pounds), Niklas doesn't profile as a high-volume receiver in the NFL. That isn't necessarily an issue, as the Cardinals have plenty of capable pass-catchers at wide receiver and running back. For tight ends, the team also has former basketball player Darren Fells, along with 2015 seventh-round selection Gerald Christian. Expect Niklas and Fells to compete for the starting job.

Carlson played 18 of the Cardinals' 70 offensive snaps during Sunday's defeat at San Francisco, Football Outsiders reports.
Over the final four outings of the season, Carlson oscillated between second and third on the tight end depth chart with Rob Housler behind Darren Fells. The likely impetus was Carlson's lacking ability as a blocker, and because Fells has been serviceable as a pass catcher -- five receptions (on 11 targets) for 71 yards during the aforementioned span -- Carlson could be jettisoned as a cost-cutting measure in the offseason. No matter how the coming months unfold, Carlson concludes his first season in the desert with 33 catches (on 55 targets) for 350 yards and one score.

Carlson (calf) is active for Sunday's game at San Francisco, the Cardinals' official site reports.
After three consecutive outings languishing behind fellow tight end Darren Fells in terms of snaps, Carlson nearly matched the former pro basketball player in Week 16, earning 28 versus Fells' 32. Nevertheless, Carlson failed to reach 20 yards receiving for the seventh time this season, which could expand to eight Sunday due to deep reserve Ryan Lindley getting the nod under center for the second game in a row.

Carlson (calf) is questionable for Sunday's game against San Francisco.
Carlson was able to log two limited practices this week, but he's not a fantasy consideration with Ryn Lindley at quarterback.
Thu Dec 25 201420:01Carlson (calf) limited in practice Thursday
Carlson (calf) was limited in practice Thursday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Carlson's activity level experienced a bump from Wednesday's no-show, which is the first step in the achievement of active status Sunday at San Francisco. If he reaches that summit, he could produce against a defense that has surrendered 15.9 YPC and three touchdown receptions to tight ends in the past three games.

Carlson (calf) didn't practice Wednesday, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
After playing a bit part in the offense for two games, Carlson nearly matched fellow tight end Darren Fells in terms of snaps in Week 16 -- 28 versus 32 -- according to Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910 Phoenix. Carlson's blocking will likely remain a liability, but he could prosper Sunday against a 49ers defense that has allowed 15.9 YPC and three touchdowns to TE in the last three contests.

Carlson took the field for 21 of the Cardinals' 64 offensive snaps during Thursday's victory at St. Louis, Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
With 47 snaps to his name, Darren Fells earned far more run than Carlson and fellow tight end Rob Housler (19) for the second game in a row. While Carlson still managed one catch (on one target) for 11 yards, the quarterback situation in Arizona is untenable due to Drew Stanton's knee sprain, meaning owners should continue to avoid their TE trio.

Carlson played 17 of the Cardinals' 69 offensive snaps during Sunday's victory against the Chiefs, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
Carlson has lost his footing as Arizona's top tight end, as evidenced by ranking behind both Darren Fells (42 snaps) and Rob Housler (21) in terms of usage. With only one reception for one yard in Week 14, Carlson failed to uphold his standard from the rest of the season -- in the first 12 games, he averaged 2.3 catches (on 4.1 targets) for 26.4 yards -- which was replaceable in the vast majority of formats. As the season winds to a close, he may have been relieved of his TE duties due to his poor form as a blocker.

Carlson hauled in 2-of-3 targets for 38 yards during Sunday's defeat at Atlanta.
Carlson didn't receive the lion's share of TE snaps in Week 13, as he does most game days, picking up 25 of the Cardinals' 55 offensive snaps, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports. Meanwhile, fellow tight ends Darren Fells (23 snaps) and Rob Housler (13) cut into Carlson's run but failed to earn even one look from Drew Stanton in the passing game. The signal caller in Arizona, whether it's Stanton or Carson Palmer (knee), hasn't really affected Carlson's weekly production, but if his deficiencies as a blocker continue, Carlson could see his relevance dwindle further.

Carlson played 43 of the Cardinals' 54 offensive snaps during Sunday's loss in Seattle, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
The Cardinals' passing attack was without a stalwart member, Larry Fitzgerald (knee), but Carlson was unable to fill the void, recording three receptions (on four targets) for 25 yards. The preceding line deviated little from his average game this season -- 2.4 catches (on 4.2 targets) for 25.4 yards -- which explains his fantasy irrelevance.

Carlson had two receptions on four targets for 33 yards in Sunday's 31-14 win over the Rams.
Other than a nice 26-yard catch at one point, Carlson wasn't a factor. Carson Palmer injured his knee Sunday, so it's possible that Drew Stanton will be starting from here on out, but that doesn't really matter for Carlson's prospects, as his numbers were the same when Stanton was under center for a few games earlier in the year.

Carlson took the field for 58 of the Cardinals' 67 offensive snaps during Sunday's victory at Dallas, the FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
Carlson and Carson Palmer hooked up on a woeful two of eight passes, but the day was salvaged during Arizona's third drive when the duo connected on a seven-yard touchdown, Carlson's first in a Cardinal uniform. In fact, Carlson's eight targets were a team-high Sunday, but the disparity in completions versus miscues resulted in a measly 19 receiving yards. On a positive note, he continued to dominate reps among Arizona tight ends, as neither Rob Housler nor Troy Niklas garnered a look from Palmer. However, Carlson's catch percentage (53) and targets per game (4.3) aren't really palatable for fantasy purposes, except in a pinch.

Carlson played 56 of the Cardinals' 70 offensive snaps in Sunday's win against the Eagles, Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
Carlson matched Andre Ellington's six targets, but the tight end merely hauled in two Carson Palmer passes for 16 yards, including a long of 12 yards. The meager output can be partly explained by Philadelphia's defense, who have allowed just 44.3 receiving yards per game and one touchdown to TE this season. However, each of Carlson's six targets occurred within 15 yards of the line of scrimmage, with none in the red zone, which continues a season-long trend. Through seven contests, he's been targeted only one time inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

Carlson took the field for 70 of the Cardinals' 76 offensive snaps during Sunday's victory at Oakland, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports. Overall, he gathered in two passes (on four targets) for 20 yards.
Carlson put up his typical mundane line, but the Cardinals' 22-game sample size under the direction of coach Bruce Arians reveals scant usage of tight ends in the passing attack. The offense in fact lacks a fullback, meaning tight ends more often than not remain in protection, which doesn't allow for a substantial target count (20 in six games for Carlson). As a result, owners are advised to search elsewhere if in need of TE production.
Sun Oct 19 201415:15Carlson (knee) active for Sunday's contest at Oakland
Carlson (knee) is active for Sunday's contest at Oakland, Mark Dalton of the Cardinals' official site reports.
Carlson dominates the snaps among Cardinals tight ends, but with only 12 catches (on 16 targets) for 129 yards through five games, he isn't a viable option outside of extremely deep formats.
Fri Oct 17 201420:40Carlson (knee) questionable for Sunday's game against Oakland
Carlson (knee) is questionable for Sunday's game against Oakland.
Carlson evidently isn't at full strength, but he seems to have a decent chance of playing after logging two limited practices to close out the week. With just 16 targets in five games, though, he doesn't look like much of a fantasy consideration.
Thu Oct 16 201418:23Carlson returned to practice Thursday on limited basis
Carlson returned to practice Thursday on a limited basis, the Cardinals' official site reports.
Carlson's health is trending upward heading toward the weekend, but you would need to be scraping the bottom of the barrel at tight end to consider playing him this week given his level of involvement in the passing game.
Wed Oct 15 201417:20Carlson (knee) didn't practice Wednesday
Carlson (knee) didn't practice Wednesday, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports.
Even though he takes the vast majority of TE reps on offense, Carlson is little more than a safety valve for Cardinals quarterbacks, whether it's Carson Palmer (shoulder) or Drew Stanton. However, Carlson's knee issue is of unknown severity, which should be monitored throughout the week in order to learn his availability Sunday in Oakland.

Carlson played 59-of-70 offensive snaps during Sunday's victory versus Washington, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
Carlson matched the six targets received by both Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown, but the tight end's final line (four catches for 14 yards) left owners wanting more. In non-PPR formats, Carlson's performance was his worst, fantasy-wise, of the season, despite far exceeding his previous season-high of three targets. His consistent usage and lack of a red-zone look through five games could soon bring to a close his streak without a touchdown, which extends to Week 10 last year as a member of the Vikings.

Carlson played all but two of the Cardinals' 58 offensive snaps during Sunday's loss in Denver, FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.
Despite the heavy usage, Carlson garnered the fifth-most targets among his teammates, turning three looks into two catches for 19 yards. On the other hand, he dominated the TE snaps, as Rob Housler (hip) saw 11 and rookie Troy Niklas earned five. In an injury-riddled game, Niklas sustained a high ankle sprain, which is generally accompanied by a multi-week absence. No matter how long he sits out, though, Carlson is the clear Cardinals tight end to consider, if in need of aid at the position with bye weeks in full force. His upcoming matchup is an intriguing one against a Washington pass defense that has allowed five touchdowns to opposing tight ends in as many contests this season.
