Fri Aug 2318:55Jordan Montgomery Headed To Bullpen
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will shift to the bullpen going forward. The D-Backs made Montgomery the odd man out with six healthy starters right now. The left-hander has been awful to the tune of a 6.44 ERA with a 67/36 K/BB ratio across 19 starts this season. Before this season, Montgomery had a solid track record over multiple seasons. The 2024 campaign is by far his worst of his professional career. The D-Backs will give the starting spot to Ryne Nelson who will take the mound against the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Nelson has posted quality starts in each of his last two outings, so he should be worth a look as a streaming option for Friday's slate.

Tue Jul 2312:13Jordan Montgomery Returning To Start On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo confirmed on Monday that left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will return from the 15-day injured list for the middle game of the series against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Tuesday. Montgomery has been working his way back since experiencing right-knee soreness on June 29, and he landed on the IL with inflammation in his right patellar tendon. After signing with the Snakes late, Montgomery has not been good, compiling a 6-5 record with a 6.44 ERA over 65 2/3 innings. Not only are the Royals a bad first matchup back from the IL for the 31-year-old southpaw, but he also didn't go on a minor-league rehab assignment. The former fourth-round pick of the New York Yankees out of South Carolina in 2014 has never been a big strikeout guy but currently has a career-low 15.1% K rate.

Fri Jul 1912:55Jordan Montgomery Throws Sim Game, On Track To Return Next Week
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) threw a simulated game on Thursday that consisted of 56 pitches, according to manager Torey Lovullo, and he appears to be on track to return from the 15-day injured list next week when the team is in Kansas City for a series against the Royals. It remains to be seen what day exactly Montgomery will make his return to Arizona's starting rotation, but fantasy managers are probably going to want to avoid the struggling 31-year-old southpaw, especially if his first start off the IL comes against the upstart Royals. Montgomery has not been effective in the desert with a 6.44 ERA in his 13 starts in 2024 and has been out since late June with right-knee inflammation.

Thu Jul 1116:35Jordan Montgomery Two Weeks Away From Rejoining The Rotation
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) is around 12 to 14 days away from returning to the team's starting rotation. Montgomery is likely to return in either the series against the Kansas City Royals or Pittsburgh Pirates after next week's All-Star break. Montgomery helped the Texas Rangers win a World Series championship last fall for the first time in franchise history, but he signed with the D-backs late this spring and just hasn't been right, going 6-5 with a bloated 6.44 ERA (4.44 FIP) and 1.67 WHIP with just 45 strikeouts and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings over his first 13 starts. The 31-year-old southpaw threw a bullpen session on Tuesday and felt good, though, as he tries to recover from right-knee inflammation. With better health, fantasy managers in deeper leagues will be hoping that Montgomery can right the ship in the second half.

Mon Jul 820:07Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Jordan Montgomery To Throw Bullpens
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said that starting pitchers Merrill Kelly (shoulder), Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) and Jordan Montgomery (knee) will all throw bullpen sessions on Tuesday. Kelly will be throwing off a mound for the first time since suffering a right-shoulder strain in April. The 35-year-old has the most fantasy appeal of the trio but may not be ready to rejoin Arizona's rotation until late August. E-Rod has yet to make his D-backs debut in 2024 after injuring his left shoulder in spring training. Montgomery is dealing with a right-knee injury and is eligible to come off the IL on Sunday. Depending on how he fares in his bullpen session, he could return before next week's All-Star break. However, the 31-year-old has been a disaster after getting a late start to the season.

Fri Jul 522:25Jordan Montgomery To Throw On Flat Ground On Saturday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will throw on flat ground on Saturday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery still has some inflammation in his right knee, but Lovullo said the team is anticipating he'll be good enough to throw on Saturday. The 31-year-old southpaw could start throwing off a mound again soon if his throwing session goes well this weekend, but Montgomery won't rejoin Arizona's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in mid-July. After helping the Texas Rangers win their first-ever World Series championship last fall, Montgomery signed with Arizona late this spring and has been a disaster in his first 13 starts, posting a 6.44 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with 45 K's and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings. He currently has a career-low 15.1% strikeout rate and has seen his walk rate increase from 4.9% in 2023 to 7.7%.

Tue Jul 218:52Jordan Montgomery Placed On Injured List
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (knee) has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to June 29. The 31-year-old needed some time off after a horrendous start to the season. Montgomery has posted a 6.44 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, and 45/23 K/BB across 13 starts. The D-Backs haven't offered a timetable for Montgomery's return to the mound. In a corresponding move, right-hander Gavin Hollowell has been recalled from Triple-A Reno. He's expected to head to the bullpen, so the D-Backs will need to fill Montgomery's spot in the rotation soon.

Fri Jun 2812:14Jordan Montgomery Has A Tough Outing On Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery wasn't long for his start on Thursday against the visiting Minnesota Twins, lasting just 2 2/3 innings and being pulled after giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits while walking one and striking out only one to drop to 6-5 in his first season in Arizona. The 31-year-old southpaw didn't get much help from his defense in this one and he was also a bit unfortunate with the Twins eeking out three infield singles. He gave up only two extra-base hits. The final line doesn't look great, and Montgomery came into this one with just five earned runs allowed in his previous three starts combined. The former fourth-round pick by the New York Yankees in 2014 out of South Carolina has struggled overall in 2024, though, and things won't get any easier with his next outing scheduled to come against the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers next week.

Sat Jun 101:39Jordan Montgomery Gets Roughed Up For Six Runs Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery (3-3) was roughed up for the loss Friday night, giving up six runs while allowing nine hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a 10-9 slugfest against the New York Mets. The Diamondbacks jumped on the board early with three runs of support for Montgomery, but unfortunately, the southpaw gave it all right back and more, allowing four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After allowing just four runs in 13 1/3 innings in April, the lefty has allowed 23 earned runs in 31 1/3 innings in May. Not only that, he has 15 walks in 44 innings pitched, which means he's on a full-season pace of almost doubling his walk total from last season. It's been a tough go, to say the least for the new Diamondbacks pitcher, who will be looking to lower his 5.48 ERA on Wednesday against a San Francisco Giants team that he allowed one run in six innings against in his first start of the season.

Thu May 900:49Jordan Montgomery Fires Seven Strong Innings
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery fired seven strong innings in Wednesday's 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, surrendering just two runs on seven hits and two walks with two punchouts in his second win of the season. It was arguably Montgomery's best start as a D-back to this point, though his first start back on April 19 may have been just as impressive. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw will still want to improve on his disappointing 4.70 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 10:6 K:BB over 23 frames (four starts) for Arizona when he takes the ball in his next scheduled appearance at home in a soft matchup against these same Reds on Monday. Cincinnati is now batting .209 as a team through 36 games, which is the worst mark in all of baseball.

Wed May 100:04Jordan Montgomery Pushed From Tuesday Start Due To Delay
Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery will not make his scheduled start in Tuesday's game against the Dodgers because the game was delayed to deal with a bee infestation by home plate. Brandon Hughes, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day, will fill in to start instead. Fantasy managers should keep an eye out for more news regarding Montgomery's next start. Hughes had a 1.84 ERA in 14 2/3 relief innings in Triple-A this season, but fantasy managers should not trust him against the Dodgers.

Sat Apr 1323:09Jordan Montgomery Will Make Season Debut On Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery will make his season debut on Friday against the San Francisco Giants. Montgomery signed a one-year, $25 million contract late into the offseason with the Diamondbacks. In his final tune-up with Triple-A Reno, Montgomery was torched for seven runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out six over 3 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old will join Arizona's rotation next week and likely replace Tommy Henry or Ryne Nelson. Montgomery was solid for the Rangers/Cardinals in 2023, posting a 3.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and a 166:48 K: BB across 188 2/3 innings.

Mon Apr 118:51Jordan Montgomery Throws 50 Pitches Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery threw three innings and 50 pitches in a simulated game at Salt River Fields. Montgomery is scheduled to make a Triple-A start for Reno on Sunday and is aiming to make his D-backs debut on April 16 after making four Triple-A starts. It was a career year for the 6-foot-6 hurler in 2023 as he tossed a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts between the Cardinals and Rangers, including a 2.79 ERA across 11 starts with the Rangers following a trade-deadline swap with St. Louis. He also tossed a 2.90 ERA in six outings (five starts) in the postseason en route to a World Series title. He has been the model of consistency and is an upper-tier fantasy starter for the 2024 campaign.

Fri Mar 2917:25Jordan Montgomery Targeting April 19 For Season Debut
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery said he is targeting April 19 versus the San Francisco Giants for his first start with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-backs officially agreed to terms with Montgomery on a one-year deal on Friday that includes a player option. He has been optioned to Triple-A Reno and will build up his arm before hopefully debuting in late April. It's no surprise that the 31-year-old southpaw isn't ready for the start of the regular season after missing all of spring training. He could get off to a slow start with his new team as well, but Montgomery should already be rostered in all fantasy leagues after helping lead the Texas Rangers to their first World Series championship last fall. He's had a below-average strikeout rate in his career, but he limits walks and has been durable for fantasy managers.

Tue Mar 2621:16Jordan Montgomery, Diamondbacks Agree On One-Year Deal
Free-agent starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery and the Arizona Diamondbacks are in agreement on a one-year, $25 million deal with a vesting player option for 2025, pending a physical. With Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) set to begin the year on the injured list, the D-backs bolster their rotation with the move. Montgomery began 2023 with the St. Louis Cardinals but ended the season winning a World Series ring with the Texas Rangers, totaling a 3.20 ERA (3.56 FIP), 1.19 WHIP, and 166:48 K:BB over 188 2/3 innings. The 31-year-old southpaw likely won't miss enough bats (21.4% strikeout rate in '23) to be an upper-echelon fantasy starter in 2024, but he will have an outstanding defense behind him in the desert. Although it's unclear if he'll be ready for Arizona's opening series of the regular season starting on Thursday, Montgomery should not be lingering on any waiver wires ahead of Opening Day.

Sun Mar 2415:31Jordan Montgomery Has Two Offers On The Table
Free agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been offered long-term deals from two teams and it sounds like it won't be long before he signs. Which two teams made the offers is still unclear, and there are still multiple teams that are in need of his services. The Yankees and Red Sox are still reportedly involved, while some playoff-caliber teams recently lost pitchers to injury including the D-Backs, Phillies, Yankees, and Astros and could make a move. CBS Sports' Jim Bowden also indicates that the Orioles could still be in the mix as well. Unlikely to pitch in the first couple weeks of the year, but coming off a season in which he posted a 3.20 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 166 K in 188 2/3 IP, the lefty can be a solid fourth starter for fantasy teams that have yet to draft.

Thu Mar 2100:20Yankees Talking With Jordan Montgomery Again
According to sources, free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery and the New York Yankees are back in contact, although a gap in contract talks still exists. Montgomery's camp compares him to Aaron Nola, who got $172 million over seven years with the Philadelphia Phillies. But Montgomery has actually been better since 2021 and was even better in the playoffs while helping the Texas Rangers win the World Series last fall. Compared to left-hander Blake Snell, who signed with the San Francisco Giants this week, Montgomery has been more durable, is younger, has been better in the playoffs, is cheaper and doesn't have a draft pick attached to him. While the 31-year-old southpaw's fantasy stock is dropping because he probably won't be ready for the start of the regular season and doesn't miss a ton of bats, he's still worth a gamble as a No. 3/4 fantasy starter for those who have yet to draft.

Tue Mar 1914:18Astros Unlikely To Pivot To Jordan Montgomery
The Houston Astros do not plan on pivoting to free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery after failing to land Blake Snell in free agency. It was recently reported that the club was in heavy pursuit of Snell but that came to a conclusion when the two-time Cy Young winner landed with the Giants on a two-year deal on Monday. As a result, Montgomery becomes the best free agent available after he worked to a 3.20 ERA across 32 starts in the 2023 season, including a tidy 2.79 ERA across 11 starts with the Rangers following a trade-deadline deal from the Cardinals. He also tossed a 2.90 ERA in 31 postseason frames, helping lead Texas to its first World Series in franchise history a season ago.

Fri Mar 814:09Jordan Montgomery Unlikely To Return To Rangers
The Texas Rangers are 'unlikely' to bring back free-agent starter Jordan Montgomery, according to general manager Chris Young. The left-hander remains unsigned despite enjoying a big 2023 season that included a World Series championship with the Rangers. Montgomery worked to a healthy 3.20 ERA across 32 starts between the Cardinals and Rangers a season ago, including a tidy 2.79 ERA across 11 starts with the Rangers following a trade-deadline deal from St. Louis. He went on to toss a 2.90 ERA in six outings (five starts) in the postseason, lowering his career postseason ERA to 2.63. The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox are a couple of teams that have been connected to the veteran this offseason.

Tue Feb 2722:43Red Sox Have Virtual Meeting With Jordan Montgomery
The Boston Red Sox recently had a zoom meeting with free-agent left-hander Jordan Montgomery. He would represent an upgrade for Boston's starting rotation in 2024 and potentially beyond if he's signed to a long-term deal. The Red Sox have the payroll flexibility to do it, but it's unclear if they'll pull the trigger. Outside of Blake Snell, Montgomery is the best starting pitcher still available on the free-agent market. The 31-year-old southpaw had a career-best 3.20 ERA (3.56 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with 48 walks and a career-high 166 strikeouts in 188 2/3 innings over 32 starts for the Cardinals and Rangers last year. He was even better in the playoffs on his way to winning a World Series ring with Texas. Montgomery is a below-average strikeout artist and would be moving to a tough ballpark and division if he lands with the Red Sox, but he's still worth a gamble as a No. 3/4 fantasy starter because of his control and ability to generate weak contact.
