Tue Aug 2721:52Joe Ryan Done For The Regular Season
The Minnesota Twins moved starting pitcher Joe Ryan (triceps) to the 60-day injured list on Tuesday, ending the hurler's regular season. Since Ryan's IL placement for the Grade 2 teres major strain behind his right shoulder was dated to Aug. 8, the 60-day placement means he is eligible to return on Oct. 7 at the earliest. He has not yet resumed throwing. As of Tuesday, Ryan also did not have a sense of any potential timeline, or if there was even any path for him to return to pitching this season. The Twins can only hope he'll be able to return at some point during the postseason if they embark on a deep run in the playoffs. The 28-year-old star right-hander was one of fantasy's most reliable starters this season, registering sevens wins, a 3.60 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 147:23 K:BB across 135 innings for Minnesota.

Fri Aug 912:18Joe Ryan To Miss Significant Time With Teres Major Strain
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan's (triceps) injury is worse than the team expected. Ryan is headed to the 15-day injured list and was diagnosed with a Grade 2 teres major strain that will take "weeks to months" to heal, according to manager Rocco Baldelli. The Twins didn't rule him out for the season just yet, but it's certainly more severe than initial indications. It's a major blow to a Twins team looking to get into the postseason. It's also a big blow for Ryan's fantasy managers, as there's a very good chance we won't see him pitch again in 2024. Minnesota will call up right-hander Louie Varland to start Game 2 of a doubleheader on Friday against the visiting division-rival Cleveland Guardians, and he could stick around in the rotation in Ryan's spot for the foreseeable future.

Thu Aug 814:16Joe Ryan Undergoing MRI Exam
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (triceps) is undergoing an MRI exam on Thursday after being forced to leave his start early on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs with right-triceps tightness after two innings of work. We should have word on the results sooner than later and whether Ryan will be forced to the 15-day injured list. The Twins were optimistic on Wednesday that the 28-year-old's injury wasn't a long-term one, but that doesn't mean they won't put him on the IL and have him rest up for at least two weeks. In four starts since the All-Star break in mid-July, Ryan is 1-3 after allowing 10 runs (nine earned) on 14 hits (three homers) while walking four and striking out 23 in 20 1/3 innings. With a 27.3% strikeout rate and career-low 4.3% walk rate, Ryan has been a fantasy asset in most leagues in 2024.

Wed Aug 716:25Joe Ryan Leaves Early Wednesday With Triceps Tightness
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (triceps) left his outing early in the bottom of the third inning on Wednesday versus the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field due to right-triceps tightness. Before calling for trainers, Ryan had allowed an earned run on a home run while walking none and striking out two in two innings pitched. Fantasy managers should be pretty worried until we know more about the severity of the 28-year-old's injury. Coming into Wednesday's start, Ryan had gone 7-7 with a 3.59 ERA (3.38 FIP), a 0.99 WHIP, 145 strikeouts and only 23 walks in 133 innings over 22 starts in his fourth year in the big leagues. His combination of a 27.3% strikeout rate and career-low 4.3% walk rate made have made him relevant in all fantasy leagues, but fantasy managers may want to brace for a potential stint on the injured list.

Sun Jun 3021:56Joe Ryan Looks Excellent On Sunday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan was outstanding on the mound during Sunday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Ryan recorded 10 strikeouts as he allowed two runs (one earned) in a no-decision on Sunday. The right-hander gave up six hits and didn't walk any batters during this outing. He was shaky during his last start, but Ryan rebounded nicely on Sunday. He'll look to keep the good times rolling against the Houston Astros prior to the All-Star break.

Fri Jun 1408:43Joe Ryan Records Fifth Victory
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan improved his record to 5-5 by defeating the Oakland Athletics on Thursday. Ryan tossed seven innings and allowed three hits, two runs, one walk and recorded five strikeouts. All of Ryan's runs came off a Tyler Soderstrom two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. The right-hander has been putting together a strong season on the hill and remains a consistent option near the top of managers rotations. Ryan will carry a 3.24 ERA into his next start versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Managers shouldn't hesitate to start Ryan when it's his turn in the rotation.

Mon May 2717:58Joe Ryan Tosses Gem Against Royals
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan allowed one run on four hits across seven innings of work during Monday's 6-5 win over the Kansas City Royals. He struck out nine batters and did not issue a walk. The Twins bullpen made things closer than they should have been in this one, but Ryan still thankfully came away with the win. The 27-year-old has now produced a quality start in six of his last seven outings. Ryan is quickly becoming a must-start option every time he takes the mound as he now owns a 2.96 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 73:9 K:BB through 11 starts this season. His next projected outing is scheduled for Saturday on the road against the Houston Astros. Fantasy managers should fire him up again with confidence.

Minnesota Twins starting pitcherJoe Ryan(3-3) hurled seven shutout innings, picking up the win, collecting six strikeouts, and allowing three hits and two walks in a 10-0 victory over the Washington Nationals. The seven scoreless innings lowered the right-hander's ERA to 3.15 on the season, giving him five quality starts in his last six outings. Ryan looks like he's breaking out in his age-27 season with career-best 3.15 ERA and 0.98 WHIP totals on the season thus far. He will look to sustain his early season success on Monday against the Kansas City Royals, whom Ryan last faced on Opening Day, allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan posted up a strong outing on Friday, striking out seven and giving up just one earned run while picking up the win in the Twins 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Ryan's only blemish was giving up a solo home run to Isiah Kiner-Falefa but gave up no other extra-base hits after that. The win moves Ryan's record on the year to 2-2 and reduced his ERA to 3.21. The Twins' right-hander will get his next shot to continue his dominant ways against the New York Yankees on Thursday.

Thu Apr 2500:43Joe Ryan Tallies First Win Against White Sox
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan tossed a quality start in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the division-rival Chicago White Sox, striking out eight hitters while giving up three runs on four hits (two home runs) and one walk for the win. After hurling two clean opening innings, Ryan yielded a couple of solo homers to the seventh and ninth batters in Chicago's lineup during the third before Braden Shewmake stole home in the fifth to tack on another score. The 27-year-old star right-hander is off to a fine start in the 2024 regular season, posting a 3.77 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a spectacular 38:4 K:BB over 28 2/3 frames (five starts). Up next for Ryan is another scheduled appearance on Monday against the White Sox, who are now slashing an anemic .189/.263/.292 as a team with an MLB-low 53 runs scored through 24 outings.

Sat Mar 212:58Joe Ryan Displays New Sinker On Friday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan, who has been criticized for relying too much on his fastball at times, displayed a new sinker in his Grapefruit League debut on Friday. Ryan threw five different pitches -- a four-seam fastball, a sweeper, splitter, a "shorter slider," and his new sinker. "It kind of just gives me the options now to throw whatever I want and whatever a lineup might dictate," Ryan said. "Just put a little indecision in the hitters' heads, and I think that always helps." The 27-year-old mostly relied on his four-seamer, sweeper and splitter in 2023, and he mostly used his fastball and splitter in his complete-game shutout of Boston on June 22. Ryan was great to start last year but fell apart and was injured late. If his secondary pitches can improve in 2024, he should serve as a solid high-end No. 3 starter for fantasy managers.

Fri Mar 117:29Joe Ryan Not Sharp Friday
Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Ryan was not at his best in a Grapefruit League contest versus the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Ryan started the game and allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk in two innings of work. He also struck out a pair. It was the first outing of the spring for the right-hander as he looks to clean up his run prevention in 2024. After working to a 3.55 ERA in 2023, Ryan posted a 4.51 mark across 29 starts in the 2023 campaign. However, he also increased his strikeout rate and lowered his walk rate, resulting in a fantastic 24.3% K-BB%, the second-best mark in baseball among the 45 pitchers who threw at least 160 innings a season ago. He remains susceptible to the long ball after posting a 31.6% ground-ball rate and 1.78 HR/9 last season but he is a rock-solid fantasy asset heading into the 2024 campaign.

Tue Oct 10 202312:49Joe Ryan To Start Game 4 Of ALDS
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan has been named the starter for Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Wednesday against the Houston Astros. Ryan will be making his postseason debut in Wednesday's start after not being used in the two-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays in the wild-card series last week. The 27-year-old has the ability to miss bats, but he was inconsistent in his third major-league season, going 11-10 with a career-high 4.51 ERA (4.13 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, 34 walks and a career-high 197 strikeouts in 29 starts covering 161 2/3 innings. Ryan didn't fare well in his two starts against the Astros this year, either, allowing nine earned runs on seven hits (three home runs) while walking four and striking out 16 in 10 innings pitched.

Fri Oct 6 202312:15Joe Ryan, Bailey Ober Could Start Game 1 Against Astros
The Minnesota Twins haven't announced who will start for them in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday against the Houston Astros, but the likeliest candidates are right-hander Joe Ryan, who was scheduled to start Game 3 of the wild-card series against the Toronto Blue Jays, and righty Bailey Ober, who looked great in his final regular season start last Sunday. Ober wasn't included on the roster for the wild-card series, but the Twins have dropped hints he'll pitch at some point in the ALDS. He was sent to the minors in September for mental and physical rest, and he went 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 26 K's in 21 2/3 innings since returning on Sept. 15. Ryan hasn't been nearly as great since returning from the Injured List on Aug. 26, and he had a 4.79 ERA in seven second-half starts.

Tue Oct 3 202300:48Joe Ryan To Start Game 3 If Needed
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan will start Game 3 of the wild-card series against the Blue Jays if the series lasts that long, per Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale. Ryan would face Chris Bassitt on the other side. The 27-year-old had a very strong start to the season but was once again plagued by home runs issues and finished with an 11-10 record, a 4.51 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, a 29.3% strikeout rate, and a 1.78 HR/9 rate in 29 starts over 161 2/3 innings pitched. Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan struck out 10 batters while conceding just three runs over six innings in a victorious outing against the Angels on Sunday. Ryan didn't give up a walk in the contest. As the regular season winds down, he is considered the front-runner to be the Twins' third starter in the postseason. However, final decisions have yet to be made. The 27-year-old's last regular-season start is scheduled for next Saturday in Denver against the Colorado Rockies.

Sat Aug 26 202310:53Joe Ryan Activated From Injured List, Will Start On Saturday
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (groin) has been activated from the 15-day injured list and will start against the Texas Rangers on Saturday. Ryan was initially placed on the IL back on Aug. 3 with a left-groin strain, so his return to the Twins' rotation is a welcome sight for the team and fantasy managers alike. The 27-year-old was incredibly effective through the first two months of the season, posting a 2.77 ERA (2.7 FIP), but then began to falter in June (4.83 ERA/4.59 FIP) before the wheels fell off in July (6.39 ERA/5.28 FIP). Overall, Ryan owns a 9-8 record, 4.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 152:25 K/BB over 126 innings (22 starts). He'll look to lengthen the Twins' lead in the American League Central on Saturday.

Wed Aug 23 202317:02Joe Ryan Expected To Start On Saturday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Joe Ryan (groin) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list to start on Saturday against the Texas Rangers. The Twins have been pleased with how Ryan has looked on his minor-league rehab start and they announced on Tuesday that his next start would likely be back in the big leagues. The 27-year-old tossed 71 pitches in his last rehab start for Triple-A St. Paul last week and struck out seven in four innings pitched. Ryan will be making his first start this weekend since going on the injured list on Aug. 3 with a left-groin strain. He will have fantasy appeal in all leagues the rest of the way after striking out 152 hitters in 126 innings this year over his 22 starts for the Twins.

Tue Aug 22 202321:08Joe Ryan Finished With His Rehab Assignment
Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Joe Ryan (groin) is likely done his rehab assignment and will make his next start in the big leagues, possibly sometime this weekend, according to Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press. The right-hander has been on the sideline since the beginning of August after suffering a groin issue and made just one start during his rehab with Triple-A St. Paul. Over 126 innings this season, Ryan owns a 4.43 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 29.1% strikeout rate, and 4.8% walk rate with a 9-8 record. The 27-year-old is better than his ERA shows, and fantasy managers should look forward to having him back in their rotation.
