The bottom of the ninth proved to be a comedy of errors against the Padres and Scahill played a leading role. He pulled Pedro Alvarez off of first base with an errant throw on a comebacker, helping to set up the fateful frame. Pittsburgh has given the former Rockies pitcher an opportunity to throw in fairly high leverage situations, but Scahill has looked decidedly average. He possesses a higher WHIP (1.50) than he does an ERA (1.40) in 19.1 innings.

Scahill struggled in 12 appearances with the Rockies in 2014, posting a 4.80 ERA and 1.73 WHIP over 15 innings, and he wasn't much better at Triple-A Colorado Springs (4.32 ERA, 1.32 WHIP). The right-hander has averaged a strikeout per inning in three seasons at the Triple-A level and the Pirates have a way of working magic with pitchers, but it's hard to imagine Scahill separating from the front end of the bullpen in 2015.
