Mazzoni was recalled from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday.
The right-hander was clobbered for six earned runs in his first two major league appearances earlier this season (two innings), but he'll get another opportunity with Wil Myers (wrist) landing on the DL. Mazzoni has been much better with El Paso, giving up just two earned runs on six hits with a 27:4 K:BB in 17.1 innings.
Fri May 1 201517:11Mazzoni optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday
Mazzoni was optioned to Triple-A El Paso on Friday, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Mazzoni's major league career got off to a nightmarish start, as he gave up four runs on five hits in one inning against Houston on Tuesday after allowing a pair of runs Monday in his big league debut. The right-hander will look to get back on track in El Paso and earn another opportunity with San Diego. Nick Vincent was recalled in the corresponding move.
Sun Apr 26 201513:34Mazzoni recalled from Triple-A El Paso to Padres
Mazzoni has been recalled from Triple-A El Paso to the Padres.
The Padres acquired Mazzoni when he was a starter in the Mets' organization and immediately moved him to the bullpen. The 25-year-old has been strong in his 8.1 innings at Triple-A in 2015, registering a 1.08 ERA and 14.04 K/9. His good start must have given them confidence he can now bring value as a reliever.
Tue Mar 31 201518:33Cory Mazzoni: Optioned To Triple-A
Mazzoni has been optioned to Triple-A El Paso, Dennis Lin of the Union-Tribune reports.
Mazzoni was acquired in Monday's trade that sent lefty reliever Alex Torres to the Mets. The right-handed Mazzoni possesses a low-to-mid 90s fastball to go with a change-up and a slider. Mazzoni will start the season at Triple-A El Paso, where he should land in the starting rotation.
Mon Mar 30 201513:13Mazzoni traded to Padres in exchange for Alex Torres on Monday
Mazzoni was traded to the Padres in exchange for Alex Torres on Monday.
The Padres say they have graded Mazzoni's fastball, slider and changeup as above-average offerings. A 25-year-old with just 52 innings at Triple-A, Mazzoni is not much of a prospect. He could not be coming to a worse team in terms of getting a chance to crack into the big league rotation, given the Padres' starting pitching depth. He had a 4.67 ERA and a 22.3 percent K-rate in nine starts at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2014, although that is a brutal place to pitch. Look for him to spend all of 2015 at Triple-A.
Fri Mar 20 201517:04Mazzoni sent by Mets to their minor-league camp Friday
Mazzoni was sent by the Mets to their minor-league camp Friday, ESPN New York reports.
Mazzoni had an outside shot to earn a bullpen role with a good spring training. However, he posted a 7.71 ERA in 2.1 innings, allowing six hits while walking three. Mazzoni likely will start for Triple-A Las Vegas and be a possible option later on if he pitches well.
