Kelly (groin) has been cleared for field work and some baseball activities, Corey Brock of MLB.com reports.
Kelly suffered a groin strain in the initial days of spring training. While it appears he's moving in the right direction in his recovery, he has not been cleared for bullpen sessions and there is no set timetable for him to return to a mound.
Sat Feb 28 201512:16Kelly (groin) has returned to field
Kelly (groin) has returned to the field , Dennis Lin of U-T San Diego reports.
There's no word if Kelly is 100 percent, so be on the lookout for any appearances by him in the Padres' next few spring games to confirm his health.
Sun Feb 22 201512:09Kelly will miss few days with groin strain
Kelly will miss a few days with a groin strain, Dennis Lin of U-T San Diego reports.
Missing time won't be good for Kelly's roster chances, considering how rough his rookie 2014 season was (6.21 ERA, 1.690 WHIP). Despite a very high 55.8 percent groundball rate, he fell victim to a 1.55 HR/9 that should regress this season. He's still a real prospect though, so he should be given the opportunity to show his stuff this spring.
Thu Feb 19 201518:08Kelly (elbow) will face no restrictions entering spring training
Kelly (elbow) will face no restrictions entering spring training, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Kelly was shut down for the season by the Padres last May after straining his forearm in a rehab start with Double-A San Antonio, but the full offseason to recover has him feeling healthy and confident heading into 2015. An array of injuries that included Tommy John surgery in 2013 have provided a number obstacles for the 25-year-old, who was considered one of the top pitching prospects in baseball when he was dealt to San Diego in December 2010 as part of the Adrian Gonzalez trade. Kelly will receive the chance to compete for the Padres' No. 5 rotation spot, but it's more likely that he opens the season at Triple-A El Paso to build up his innings count.
Mon Feb 16 201512:11Casey Kelly:
Kelly (elbow) will be stretched out as a starter at the club's major-league spring training, John Morosi of Fox Sports reports.
Kelly had a shortened 2014 season after missing the entirety of the 2013 campaign following Tommy John surgery. He experienced recurring elbow soreness and was shut down in May after making four starts last year. The news of Kelly getting work as a starter during spring training is an encouraging sign for the 25-year-old right hander. There are a few other starters vying for the fifth spot in the rotation ahead of Kelly at this point, but being stretched into a starter speaks to the Padres' confidence in Kelly's health right now.
Tue Oct 7 201417:38Kelly (elbow) will ramp up throwing program in early 2015
Kelly (elbow) will ramp up his throwing program in early 2015, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
After missing the 2013 season due to Tommy John surgery, Kelly didn't make an appearance after May 19 as a result of a sore right elbow. Prior to the shutdown, he posted a 2.21 ERA, 1.279 WHIP, and 17:1 K:BB in 20.1 innings across four starts at High-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. In early August, he started playing catch, which, along with the aforementioned program, will aid in his aim to be ready for spring training next year.
Tue Aug 19 201420:51Kelly (elbow) began playing catch about two weeks ago
Kelly (elbow) began playing catch about two weeks ago, but is unlikely to pitch in games this season, the Union-Tribune's Dennis Lin reports.
He had been shut down with elbow soreness since the issue first arose in May, and at this point the Padres likely just want him primed to be ready to pitch in spring training games in 2015.

Mon Apr 7 201417:16Padres' Kelly (elbow) plays catch Monday
Casey Kelly (elbow) played catch Monday.
Kelly was scratched from a simulated game Saturday due to soreness in his surgically-repaired right elbow, but it was only in the back of his elbow and not related to his Tommy John surgery. The next step calls for him to throw a simulated game in a few days. The Padres aren't going to push him, but he should contribute at some point this season if he can avoid setbacks.
