Owens was battered for seven runs on 10 hits, walking four and striking out four over 4.1 innings of an 8-2 loss to the Indians on Friday night.
Owens (4-4, 4.57 ERA) has had his ups and downs this season, and while he had pitched well recently, he'll end his season on a sour note. Command continues to be a struggle for him as he needed 107 pitches (61 for strikes) and didn't make it out of the fifth inning. There is considerable upside here, but he will need to hit his spots consistently to be a positive factor next year.

Owens was excellent in Sunday's start against the Orioles, striking out five and walking just one in 7.2 shutout innings en route to his fourth win of the season.
The rookie has now allowed just four earned runs in his last 22.2 innings, thanks largely to a pair of scoreless 7.2 inning starts against the O's. Owens now has a 3.84 ERA in 58.2 innings since being called up, and he will make his final start of the 2015 season Friday against the Indians.

Owens gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in 7.1 innings Tuesday against the Rays.
He was perfect through four innings, but then the Rays started to chip away. The rookie's pitch count was only at 90 (63 strikes) before he exited, which allowed him to pitch into the eighth inning despite shaky results late. Owens has two more starts on tap this season, one against Baltimore on Sunday and another in Cleveland for the last series of the year.

Owens will make his next start Tuesday in Tampa Bay, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
Owens, who has covered 166 innings between Triple-A Pawtucket and the Red Sox this season, is expected to take the hill three more times this season, according to interim manager Torey Lovullo. The 22-year-old has noticed inconsistent results since making his big-league debut, but is coming off one of the most impressive showings of his brief MLB career. He held the Orioles without a run over 7.2 innings his last time out, while giving up six hits and no walks.

Owens allowed six hits and no walks while striking out four in 7.2 shutout innings in Wednesday night's win over the Orioles.
This was the first start that Owens hasn't walked a batter, an uncommon result thus far in the left-hander's career. At some point, if Owens can repeat all the mechanics in his 6-foot-6 frame and keep the ball around the zone, he'll be a good middle-of-the-rotation starter in the big leagues.

Owens allowed one run on three hits and four walks while striking out three in 5.1 innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays.
He struggled mightily with his command, as he hit two batters in addition to walking four Tuesday. Still, he was able to grind against an excellent Blue Jays' lineup and would have been in line for a win if he could have received more than one run of support. His next scheduled start is Monday in Baltimore.

Owens was clobbered for seven runs on six hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in a loss to the Yankees on Wednesday. He struck out two.
The young lefty struggled mightily with his fastball command and the Yankees took advantage, touching Owens up for two homers in what turned out to be an eight-run second inning. Owens has now had two seven-run blowups in his last four outings, but he's allowed a total of six runs in his other four starts for the big club (23 innings). Next up for Owens, a matchup with the powerful Blue Jays' lineup at home.

Owens allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walking four and striking out six over five innings, coming away with a no-decision against the Mets on Friday night.
His numbers weren't bad overall, but with their highly flammable bullpen, the Red Sox really need innings out of their starters and Owens needed 108 pitches (65 for strikes) to cover five innings. Boston ended up winning the game in extra innings, but it wasn't with considerable nail-biting as the bullpen combined to allow a couple of runs on three hits and an ugly seven walks. Owens has excellent stuff if he can just keep everything in synch.

Owens turned in an impressive start Friday night, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking one and striking out four over eight innings as the Red Sox defeated Kansas City 7-2.
Owens (2-1, 4.50 ERA) has been up and down so far in the early days of his major league career, but this was clearly an up night. He commanded the strike zone (103 pitches, 64 for strikes) and it allowed him to get deep into the game - all the keys to his success. Owens has very good stuff, and when he locates it, he is likely to enjoy success. He is still rather inconsistent, making him somewhat risky, but he is taking positive steps.

Owens was pounded for seven runs and 10 hits, including three homers, but he struck out 10 and walked one in six innings in a loss to the Mariners.
When Owens hit his spots, he was effective. When he missed he was crushed. He threw 63 of 99 pitches for strikes. The final line looks ugly, but considering it was his third career start, it wasn't all bad.

Owens earned his first career victory Sunday against the Tigers, allowing just one run with two strikeouts and four walks in five innings.
The youngster struggled with his command at times, throwing just 50 of 84 pitches for strikes, but he allowed just one extra-base hit and was able to mitigate the damage. Owens now has a 3.60 ERA through two starts this season, and he will look for career win No. 2 next Sunday against Seattle.

Owens allowed three earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out five over five innings of a 13-3 loss to the Yankees on Tuesday night.
Owens looked impressive in his major league debut after being called up to start against the Yankees. He had only given up one run through the first five innings, but after surrendering hits to the first two batters in the sixth, Owens was pulled only to see those runs eventually score. He showed great control with just one walk, while fanning five batters. Owens will look to capture his first win on Sunday in Detroit.

Owens was called up by the Red Sox and will start Tuesday against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.
The 23-year-old lefty will oppose Masahiro Tanaka in his major league debut, and figures to get an extended run in the rotation with the Red Sox in evaluation mode. Owens struggled early on this season, especially with his control, but he's been much better of late with a 2.84 ERA and 34:8 K:BB in his last five starts for Triple-A Pawtucket (31.2 innings). Keep in mind, though, that the Yankees have the third-best wOBA against left-handed pitching in all of baseball (.336).
Sun Aug 2 201517:31Owens will be recalled to pitch Tuesday in New York
Owens will be recalled to pitch Tuesday in New York, Tom Layman of the Boston Herald reports.
This move was speculated for some time, but it's now official that Owens will make his Major League debut Tuesday. The 23-year-old owns a 3.16 ERA over 122.1 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox will need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for him before he can be recalled, so look for a corresponding move to be announced in the near future.

Owens could be in line to make his major-league debut Tuesday against the Yankees, Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal reports.
With the Red Sox placing Rick Porcello (triceps) on the DL and Steven Wright and Eduardo Rodriguez set to start games Wednesday and Thursday, manager John Farrell declared that Tuesday's start would come from a pitcher not currently on the active roster. All signs point to that pitcher being Owens, who would be on his normal rest after making his last start on July 29 for Triple-A Pawtucket. The Red Sox's top pitching prospect, Owens has excelled in his 21 starts with Pawtucket this season, generating a 3.16 ERA and 103:56 K:BB ratio over 122.1 innings. Even if the 23-year-old's appointment to the big club doesn't come Tuesday, it seems quite likely that he'll get the call up at some point in the near future.

Owens will be called up to Boston next week and be inserted into the starting rotation, the Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox are going to change up the rotation, a unit that's given up first-inning runs in each of the last three games. Owens, a prized left-handed pitching prospect, pitched Wednesday night for Triple-A Pawtucket, giving up one run on five hits and one walk in six innings. After experiencing a bout of control problems early in the season, Owens has allowed only 14 walks in his last nine starts, spanning 58 innings.

Owens allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out a season-high nine batters for Triple-A Pawtucket last Friday.
Owens has battled control problems in 2015, walking a ton of batters and unable to extend deep into games. That's turned around of late. In his last six starts, Owens has averaged 6.2 innings with a 34-to-10 strikeout-to-walk rate.

Owens, 22, has a 3.42 ERA and 76:50 K:BB ratio through 97.1 innings for Triple-A Pawtucket.
Owens picked a bad year to have his worst season as a professional. The Boston starting rotation has struggled, and Owens likely would have found his way to the majors by now if his strikeout total remained up. He has been unable to locate at all this season, though, despite opposing batters hitting just .185 against him. He still hasn't been bad, per se, but the lack of command will leave him in the minors, at least for now.

Owens allowed one run on four hits and one walk while striking out seven in six innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday.
A strong six innings from Owens, whose inability to command this season has tarnished what has been a stellar minor-league career. He had entered Sunday's game having allowed 42 walks in 64.1 innings.

Owens allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out seven in five innings for Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.
Owens, Baseball America's 44th ranked prospect when the season began, continues to have some difficulty at the Triple-A level. He's permitted 38 walks in 59.1 innings and that leads to a lot of pitches without going deep into games. The left-hander has not pitched more than 6.1 innings in any start and is averaging 5.1 innings per start.
