Mon Mar 12 201221:07Padres' Cumberland decides to retire
Padres' vice president of player development and international scouting Randy Smith told Corey Brock of MLB.com that prospect infielder Drew Cumberland has retired.
Cumberland made a comeback attempt this spring after retiring last August due to an inner-ear disorder and post-concussion effects, but he informed the Padres on Sunday that his symptoms have returned. "I just think it was the daily physical demands of being a professional baseball player," said Smith. "He worked out really hard [in the offseason] and didn't have problems. But there's a big difference between working out and playing the sport." Cumberland, a supplemental first-round pick in 2007, just turned 23 in January and had a .316/.380/.430 batting line over four seasons in the minors.

Fri Dec 2 201113:21Drew Cumberland to resume playing career
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com reports that Drew Cumberland will resume his baseball career after being cleared of post-concussion symptoms.
Cumberland retired in August after he was unable to overcome an inner-ear disorder and post-concussion effects, but he's experienced, according to his agent, "significant progress" and is ready to give baseball a try again. Because the 22-year-old only recently was cleared, the Padres did not protect him from the Rule 5 draft. A former top prospect that appeared in the 2010 Futures Game, he now seems likely to be selected in next week's draft. A shortstop, Cumberland boasts a career .316/.380/.430 batting line in the minors to go along with 62 stolen bases.

Mon Aug 15 201112:39Cumberland retires due to inner-ear issue
Padres shortstop prospect Drew Cumberland has retired after being diagnosed with bilateral vestibulopathy.
Bilateral vestibulopathy is a rare inner-ear condition that can cause dizziness, blurred vision and headaches. A former supplemental first-round draft pick, Cumberland posted a cool .890 OPS in 75 games between Single-A and Double-A last year. The 22-year-old is seeking a coaching position with the Padres.

Tue Jul 20 201014:58Cumberland has severe cut, out 6-8 weeks
Padres shortstop prospect Drew Cumberland has been diagnosed with a severe laceration on his left knee.
Cumberland injured himself while chasing a ball against a concrete wall this weekend in Midland, Texas and is expected to miss the next 6-8 weeks. He was promoted to Double-A San Antonio after tearing it up in Single-A, but the 21-year-old will hit the minor league disabled list with a .278/.298/.333 Double-A battling line, no home runs and three extra-base hits in 54 at-bats.

Mon May 3 201015:12Padres prospect Cumberland goes 3-for-4
Single-A Lake Elsinore's Drew Cumberland went 3-for-4 with two RBI on Sunday and is 9-for-17 with a homer in his last four games.
Cumberland has had injury problems since the Padres made him a supplemental first-round pick in 2007, but he put up nice results in 77 games last year and he's off to a .383/.439/.617 start with 10 steals in 60 at-bats this season. It's unclear whether he'll fit at shortstop or second base for the long term, but with his ability to make contact and his occasional pop, he should be able to help the Padres in 2012.
