Mon Jan 13 202000:02AP source: Dodgers sign Alex Wood to $4 million, 1-year deal
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers and pitcher Alex Wood agreed to a $4 million, one-year deal Sunday, a person familiar with the agreement said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been announced.“We back,” Wood tweeted on Sunday, his 29th birthday.Wood returns to Los Angeles after spending last season with the Cincinnati Reds. He was part of a deal in which the Dodgers sent Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp to the Reds last offseason. Wood's time in Cincinnati was plagued by injury. His back flared up in spring training and then he began last season on the injured list. The left-hander was activated in July and made just seven starts before his season ended early in September. He was 1-3 with a 5.80 ERA.Wood's best year in Los Angeles was 2017 when he was a National League All-Star and had a 16-3 record with a 2.72 ERA. He took a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Houston in Game 4 of the World Series that fall.He returns with a chance to join the Dodgers' starting rotation, which he was part of at various times during four seasons.___AP Baseball Writer Ronald Blum in New York contributed to this report.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Dec 18 201915:40Miley and Reds finish off $15 million, 2-year contract
CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds added to their already deep starting pitching Wednesday by finalizing a $15 million, two-year contract with Wade Miley that adds a left-hander to their rotation. The 33-year-old will get $6 million in 2020 and $8 million the following year. Cincinnati has a $10 million club option for 2022 with a $1 million, and Miley can earn $500,000 annually in performance bonuses based on innings. He joins a rotation that includes All-Stars Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray, along with Trevor Bauer and Anthony DeSclafani. Bauer came from Cleveland last July as part of the deal for outfielder Yasiel Puig and head into the final year of his contract.“We felt it was important to add more innings and depth to the pitching staff, and as a left-hander he will be a great complement to our existing group,” president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. It's the Reds' second notable offseason deal. Former Brewers second baseman Mike Moustakas got a $64 million, four-year deal to fill... [More]
Fri Nov 15 201903:54A position-by-position look at the free agent market
Patrick Corbin was an exception last offseason.Amid a slow free agent market — some stars didn’t sign until after the start of spring training — Corbin’s search for a new home was over in December when he received a $140 million, six-year contract from Washington. That worked out pretty well for both team and player. Corbin was a key part of the Nationals’ starting rotation this year, and he threw three scoreless innings in relief in Game 7 of the World Series, helping the team win its first World Series title. Now, another offseason is in full swing. It’s hard to say whether teams will be more aggressive in pursuing free agents, hoping to land the next Corbin, but the Atlanta Braves already made a significant move, signing reliever Will Smith away from San Francisco. Here’s a look at the top free agents still available, broken down by position. Players are listed with their most recent teams, with their ages in parentheses:LEFT-HANDED STARTERHyun-Jin Ryu, Dodgers (32)The runner-up for the... [More]
Thu Oct 31 201920:49Cole, Rendon among 131 free agents on market
NEW YORK (AP) — Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon became a free agent Thursday, a day after homering to spark Washington's seventh-inning comeback in Game 7 of the World Series.Houston pitcher Gerrit Cole also went free after warming up in the bullpen but never getting into the season finale. And Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the World Series MVP, could be joining them in the next few days. He has the right to opt out of his contract, which has $100 million over four years remaining.Baseball's business season starts shortly after the final out."I think it's hard to kind of fast-forward," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "Seasons end really fast. I don't care if you get all the way to the seventh game of the World Series. It's all of a sudden — boom! — it's over."Cole, Rendon and Strasburg all are represented by Scott Boras, known for slow, methodical negotiations. Last winter, he reached outfielder Bryce Harper's $330 million, 13-year contract with Philadelphia on Feb. 28.Cole,... [More]

Mon Sep 30 201916:43Reds take only small steps in 6th straight losing season
CINCINNATI (AP) — The bases were loaded and the 27,774 fans were on their feet begging for a hit that would allow retiring broadcaster Marty Brennaman to proclaim one final, glorious time: "This one belongs to the Reds!"It never happened. Jose Peraza flied out routinely to end the eighth-inning rally, leaving fans crestfallen over yet another wasted opportunity in a season full of them. The Reds lost their final home game 5-3 to the Brewers."And that has been the essence of this ballclub the entire season," Brennaman summed up.Marty nailed it.The Reds tried an unorthodox strategy to become relevant in 2019. Rather than keeping with their plan of rebuilding with young players, they became movers and shakers in the offseason, bringing in veterans who were in the final years of their deals.Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp, Alex Wood, Tanner Roark and Sonny Gray came aboard, with Gray agreeing to a contract extension while the others were a season away from free agency. The Reds accomplished their overriding... [More]
Mon Sep 30 201916:24October outsiders: Indians' final comeback falls short
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians made one stirring comeback after another through a season scattered with adversity, misfortune, and unexpected challenges.Their last one fell short. They're stubbornly sitting out the postseason for the first time since 2015."We were on the run, and I just wanted to play in the playoffs," right-hander Mike Clevinger said after the Indians lost Sunday in Washington, concluding their taxing 2019 season with a five-game losing streak. "We didn't want that to come to an end. I wanted to pitch in October."Not this time. The Indians were officially eliminated from the playoffs on Friday, but only after they had exhausted themselves while overcoming injuries and fighting in a vain attempt to catch the homer-hammering Minnesota Twins, who clubbed Cleveland out of its three-year reign atop the AL Central. In truth, the Indians, who finished with 93 wins, played from behind since last winter when owner Paul Dolan's decision to chop payroll hollowed manager Terry Francona's...
