Tue Jun 8 202123:25Pirates' Hayes misses 1B on homer, Dodgers beat Bucs 5-3
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ke’Bryan Hayes hastily missed first base and was called out after hitting a first-inning homer, sending Walker Buehler on his way to seven scoreless innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 Tuesday night. The Pirates star rookie stung an opposite-field line drive in the first inning against Buehler that narrowly cleared the right-field wall, just inside the foul pole. Running hard and with his eyes on the ball, Hayes missed touching first base with his left foot by two or three inches and kept on going. Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts challenged, and umpires overturned the call after a short video review. Buehler (5-0) retired his last 13 batters and had two hits to raise his career batting average to .124. He allowed two hits, struck out two and walked one while throwing 93 pitches. Pirates rookie JT Brubaker (4-5) shut out the Dodgers through four innings but did not make it out of the fifth, when Los Angeles scored three times. Kenley Jansen... [More]
Tue Jun 8 202123:16Eric Haase homers in 1st and helps Tigers beat Mariners 5-3
DETROIT (AP) — Eric Haase hit a two-run homer in the first inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-3 Tuesday night. Matthew Boyd (3-6) allowed an unearned run, six hits and a walk over six innings. Daniel Norris inherited the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and limited Seattle to two runs. Jose Cisnero pitched the ninth, striking out two and walking one for his second save in three chances. Marco Gonzales (1-4) gave up four runs and five hits over four innings in his second start since coming back from a strained left forearm. The Tigers took advantage of Gonzales early, scoring four runs in two innings. Robbie Grossman led off the game with a double and scored on Miguel Cabrera's single. Haase's eighth homer this season gave Detroit a 3-0 lead. Seattle got a break in the second when Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop failed to field a bouncing ball hit to his backhand, allowing Donovan Walton to score. Derek Hill's single — his first career RBI — gave Detroit... [More]
Tue Jun 1 202119:13Mariners place Kyle Lewis on IL with right knee injury
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Kyle Lewis on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a torn meniscus in his right knee and it's unclear whether he'll need surgery. Seattle manager Scott Servais said Lewis had an MRI on Tuesday morning and the Mariners placed last year’s American League Rookie of the Year on the injured list for the second time this season. Lewis began the season on the injured list after suffering a bone bruise in his knee late in spring training. “It was different than what he had in spring training. Yesterday, the initial report that I got, it was similar to that. It was different. It was a meniscus issue. In spring training, it was not," Servais said. Lewis appeared to get injured while trying to run down a fly ball from Sean Murphy in the eighth inning of the Mariners' victory Monday over Oakland. Lewis made a leaping attempt on the deep drive and left the game before the start of the ninth inning. Lewis missed the first three weeks of the regular... [More]
Tue Jun 1 202116:33Mariners place Kyle Lewis on IL with right knee injury
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners placed outfielder Kyle Lewis on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a torn meniscus in his right knee. This is the second time this season the Mariners have placed last year’s American League Rookie of the Year on the injured list. Lewis appeared to get injured while trying to run down a fly ball from Sean Murphy in the eighth inning of the Mariners' victory Monday over Oakland. Lewis made a leaping attempt on the deep drive and left the game before the start of the ninth inning. Lewis started the season on IL after suffering a deep bone bruise in his knee late in spring training. He missed the first three weeks of the regular season before debuting April 20. After a slow start, Lewis had come on of late, hitting .303 with two doubles and two home runs over the past nine games. Seattle recalled outfielder Taylor Trammell from Triple-A Tacoma to take Lewis’ spot. Trammell hit .157 in 27 games with the Mariners earlier this season, but he was batting .384 with six home runs and 19 RBIs in 17 games since going down to Triple-A. Seattle also activated left-hander Marco Gonzales from the injured list to start Tuesday night against the A’s. Gonzales has been out since late April with a strained forearm. The Mariners optioned right-hander Robert Duggar to Tacoma. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Thu May 13 202102:16Top Mariners prospects Kelenic, Gilbert coming up to majors
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Seattle Mariners' future arrives Thursday. Two major parts of it, anyway. The Mariners will call up touted outfield prospect Jarred Kelenic and promising right-hander Logan Gilbert before Seattle's home series opener against Cleveland, manager Scott Servais confirmed Wednesday night after a 7-1 loss to the Dodgers. Gilbert will be on the mound at T-Mobile Park on Thursday to make his major league debut. “It’ll be an exciting day for those young players tomorrow,” Servais said. “Looking forward to having them on our roster and see what they can do. They’ve both got bright futures.” The Mariners didn't immediately announce all of their transactions, but Servais said they are optioning outfielder Taylor Trammell back to the minors, and the club is likely to add a third player as well. After AL Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis, Evan White and Justin Dunn led a wave of young talent reaching Seattle last season, Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto decided the time is right... [More]
Sun May 2 202101:23Conforto HR in 9th, questionable call help Mets beat Phils
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Michael Conforto hit a tiebreaking home run in the ninth inning and the New York Mets benefited from a very questionable call by the second base umpire to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 Saturday night. Conforto led off the ninth by connecting against Hector Neris (1-3). Conforto also had a two-run double in a four-run first inning against former teammate Zack Wheeler. The Mets squandered the 4-0 lead but recovered to win for just the fourth time in 12 games — even after center fielder Brandon Nimmo and third baseman J.D. Davis exited with hand injuries. Alec Bohm tied it with a two-run homer for the Phillies, who have alternated wins and losses in their last 10 games. Philadelphia hasn’t won consecutive games since a three-game sweep of Atlanta to open the season. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, second base umpire Jose Navas ruled Andrew McCutchen ran out of the baseline to avoid an attempted tag by shortstop Francisco Lindor on what became an inning-ending... DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit three home runs, including a grand slam and solo shot off Washington ace Max Scherzer, and had seven RBIs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Nationals 9-5 on Tuesday night. Guerrero’s slam in the third put the Blue Jays ahead 4-3 and ended Scherzer’s scoreless streak at 19 innings. Guerrero made it 7-3 with his drive in the fifth and added a two-run, seventh-inning shot off Kyle Finnegan to complete his first three-homer game. Scherzer (1-2) joined Ivan Nova as the only pitchers to have allowed a homer to both Guerrero Jr. and his father, Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero. Scherzer allowed seven runs — five earned — and eight hits over five innings. Tommy Milone (1-0) was the winner. RAYS 4, ATHLETICS 3 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Fri Apr 16 202102:28Ramrez helps Indians bounce back, beat White Sox 4-2
CHICAGO (AP) — Slumping slugger José Ramírez connected for a go-ahead, two-run homer off Lance Lynn in the sixth inning and the Cleveland Indians bounced back from being no-hit, beating the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Thursday. After Carlos Rodón just missed a perfect game Wednesday night, there was a different kind of tension this time as the benches emptied in the bottom of the first. Adam Eaton singled and tried to advance when Indians right fielder Josh Naylor threw to third, hoping to get the lead runner. Eaton arrived ahead of the throw back to second, but was called out when his hand came off the bag while shortstop Andrés Giménez stood his ground and held the tag. Eaton grabbed Giménez’s leg, began barking and then pushed Giménez in the chest with two hands. Indians starter Aaron Civale plunked Eaton with a pitch in the upper arm in the third. Civale (3-0) allowed only a run — in the first — and five hits through six innings in his third straight strong start. Nick Wittgren and James... [More]

Thu Apr 8 202123:44Mets beat Marlins 3-2 on disputed hit by pitch in 9th
NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil launched a tying homer in the bottom of the ninth inning on his 29th birthday and the New York Mets were handed the winning run on a disputed hit by pitch for a bizarre 3-2 victory over the Miami Marlins in their home opener Thursday. With the bases loaded and one out, a scuffling Michael Conforto appeared to stick out his right elbow pad just enough to get it grazed by a 1-2 breaking ball from closer Anthony Bass that looked to be in the strike zone. Plate umpire and crew chief Ron Kulpa at first signaled strike, then quickly ruled Conforto was hit by the pitch. Conforto headed toward first base as Luis Guillorme scored and the Mets celebrated a comeback win in front of the first crowd at Citi Field in 557 days. Marlins players and manager Don Mattingly argued with Kulpa before a replay review was initiated. The review lasted 58 seconds, and the call was upheld. According to baseball rules, if a batter is hit by a pitch in the strike zone, the pitch should be... [More]

Sat Mar 6 202113:25Mariners hope to have unearthed pitching gem in Chris Flexen
This past offseason was not going to be the time the Seattle Mariners made a bevy of high-priced moves in free agency. Not with the team focused on getting its young prospects closer to the majors and money tight after a season with no fans in stadiums. The Mariners had to be clever to bolster some of their needs. Enter Chris Flexen. Seattle needed at least one more arm for its pitching rotation and it unearthed Flexen, who after spending the 2020 season pitching in South Korea, was ready for a return to the majors and the chance to restart a career that didn’t begin well during his time with the New York Mets. Flexen signed a $4.75 million, two-year contract with a club option for 2023. “One thing to keep in mind I think, everybody says, ‘ah, he spent some time in Korea.’ He is still only 26 years old,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. “I look at it, he fits right into our group. He had success over in Korea. He’s looking to get that to translate over here.” Barring a setback during... [More]
Tue Mar 2 202117:34Yusei Kikuchi faces most important season yet for Mariners
It feels very much like Yusei Kikuchi just arrived in the majors after his highly anticipated move from Japan. Yet, the left-hander is already about to start his third season with the Seattle Mariners and easily his most important to date. “I feel that he’s kind of got his arms around where he’s at as a pitcher and hopefully it starts playing out on the field more consistently,” manager Scott Servais said. “We’ve seen it. We’ve seen it in flashes, we just haven’t seen consistent stretches of it.” Kikuchi got in his first work of spring training Tuesday, throwing two innings, allowing one hit, one run and striking out three against the Cleveland Indians. His plan is to build up to five or six innings prior to the start of the season, when Kikuchi seems likely to fit into the six-man rotation behind staff ace Marco Gonzales. And when the season begins, so will the analysis of how and whether the Mariners will move forward with Kikuchi. Kikuchi’s contract is structured so that he and the Mainers... [More]
Tue Feb 23 202116:34Seattle doing damage control with players after exec's video
Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais are doing damage control with players who were directly mentioned or referenced by former team CEO Kevin Mather in an online video that led to his resignation. The message over the past two days to those affected has been: you have every right to be upset. “We are very open with our players and urge them to be the same. And if they want to be angry, they should be, frankly. They should be insulted,” Dipoto said Tuesday. “But at the same time, they are collectively driven toward what we’re trying to do here as a team.” The video posted over the weekend showed Mather expressing his views of the club’s organizational strategy and making controversial remarks about players during a recent online event. He took insensitive shots at a former All-Star from Japan and a top prospect from the Dominican Republic for their English skills. He also admitted the team may be manipulating service time for some of its young players.... [More]
