Thu Aug 814:26German Marquez Shut Down For Rest Of The Season
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) has been shut down for the rest of the 2024 season after being diagnosed with a stress reaction in his right elbow. However, the good news is that there is no damage to the ligaments in his right arm. Marquez should be ready to throw in six to eight weeks, according to manager Bud Black, and will have a full offseason. The 29-year-old Venezuelan hurler worked his way back from Tommy John surgery last year but was only able to make one start in 2024 before being shut down with more elbow issues. In his lone start on July 14 against the New York Mets, Marquez gave up three earned runs while walking four and fanning three in four innings. Barring further setbacks this offseason, Marquez should be ready for spring training in 2025, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues can ignore him.

Sat Aug 313:43German Marquez Logs Second Bullpen Session
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) has thrown two bullpen sessions since returning to the injured list in late July. Marquez returned to the bump on July 14 after his long recovery from Tommy John but, unfortunately, was diagnosed with elbow inflammation. Manager Bud Black expressed that the 29-year-old will need to log one more successful bullpen session before embarking on a rehab assignment. Marquez has been limited by several injuries over the past two seasons but hopes to return to a full-time role hopefully before the end of the month. Marquez could be worth stashing in deeper leagues as he should have a secure spot in the rotation once he returns.

Mon Jul 2218:10German Marquez Placed On Injured List
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with right-elbow inflammation, retroactive to July 19. The right-hander is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so Marquez having a setback shouldn't be shocking. He made one start since coming off the injured list. He pitched against the New York Mets ahead of the All-Star break. Marquez will now be sidelined for at least another two weeks. In a corresponding move, right-hander Noah Davis has been recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Davis hasn't offered much upside to the Rockies pitching staff over the last few seasons. Fantasy managers can ignore Davis going forward.

Sat Jul 1312:20German Marquez To Make Season Debut On Sunday
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) threw a bullpen session at Citi Field on Friday and is officially scheduled to start on Sunday in the series finale against the New York Mets in what will be his 2024 debut after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Marquez has been on a minor-league rehab assignment and hasn't pitched in the majors since April 26 of last year, so fantasy managers should temper expectations for him as he's eased back into the big leagues. He's expected to throw 75 to 90 pitches on Sunday. Marquez has won at least 11 games four times and is 65-56 with a 4.41 ERA in eight major-league seasons, all with the Rockies. The 29-year-old had a 6.23 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with a 23:4 K:BB in 17 1/3 rehab innings. Fantasy managers in mixed leagues can probably take a wait-and-see approach with Marquez as he works his way back into Colorado's rotation.

Thu Jul 1113:13German Marquez Lined Up To Make Season Debut On Sunday
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) reported feeling good after his latest minor-league rehab start -- eight strikeouts in five innings for Double-A Hartford on Tuesday -- and will join the Rockies on Friday when they start a three-game series against the New York Mets to close out the first half of the 2024 season. It's expected that Marquez will return to the team for the finale of that series on Sunday for his season debut. The 29-year-old made a total of seven rehab starts at all different levels of the minors and went 0-4 with a 7.11 ERA and 1.63 WHIP with 24 strikeouts and five walks in 19 total innings. His fastball was in the upper-90s recently and it's nice to see that he only walked five batters, but fantasy managers should definitely temper their expectations for what he can do in the second half of the season after coming off Tommy John surgery.

Wed Jul 320:11German Marquez Expected To Make Two More Rehab Starts
Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black expects right-hander German Marquez (elbow) to make two more minor-league rehab starts with Double-A Hartford as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Marquez gave up four earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning while throwing 33 pitches in his last rehab start on Friday for Triple-A Albuquerque. After that outing, the 29-year-old will now need two more starts in the minors to build his pitch count up before the Rockies are comfortable adding him to their starting rotation for the second half of the season. Marquez started his rehab assignment on June 12 and has allowed a total of eight earned runs while striking out 13 and walking three in 8 2/3 innings. Fantasy managers will want to temper expectations when he returns to the majors, but Marquez could have some deep-league streaming appeal.

Mon Jul 120:48German Marquez To Return Next Week
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) will make another minor-league rehab start with Double-A Hartford this week following his outing on Saturday with Triple-A Albuquerque, where he lasted just two-thirds of an inning. Marquez will then return to Colorado's starting rotation next week on the road against the Cincinnati Reds if all goes well with his final rehab start. The 29-year-old so far has an ugly 9.58 ERA with 14 strikeouts and four walks in 10 1/3 innings on his rehab assignment. Marquez has gotten up to 52 total pitches in an outing as he finalizes his rehab after having Tommy John surgery. He will be rejoining the Rockies' rotation before the All-Star break, but fantasy managers in mixed leagues should be extremely hesitant to use him as a streamer for at least a while as he regains his footing in the big leagues.

Thu Jun 2713:02German Marquez To Make Another Rehab Appearance On Friday
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow) will throw again in a minor-league rehab appearance with Triple-A Albuquerque. Marquez cruised through his third rehab start for High-A Spokane last Saturday, tossing four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and two walks while throwing strikes on 28 of his 50 pitches. "The velocity was good," Marquez said. "My fastball had some life, and my breaking ball was nice." The 29-year-old continues his rehab from Tommy John surgery and could return to Colorado's starting rotation before the All-Star break in mid-July as long as he doesn't encounter any setbacks. The Venezuelan hurler was an All-Star as recently as 2021 and could become a matchup-based streamer in deep-mixed fantasy leagues when he's back, although we'd probably temper expectations after his long layoff.

Mon Jun 320:14German Marquez Could Return In Early July
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, threw what manager Bud Black called "a really solid bullpen" of 30 to 35 pitches in Los Angeles on Saturday while mixing in some breaking balls with a majority of fastballs. "He's progressing and will go back to Arizona to get on plan and get back in ballgames. He's doing great," said Black, who gave a return estimate of early July. Marquez took a step back after feeling discomfort in the back of his right elbow after recently throwing in an Arizona Complex League game, but he remains on track to return in 2024 despite the minor setback. He's currently going through a spring training-type progression and could return just before the All-Star break. When healthy, Marquez will be a rotation option for Colorado, but fantasy managers may want to temper expectations for a pitcher with a 4.41 career ERA.

Mon May 2022:54Rockies Encouraged By German Marquez's Progress
Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black is encouraged by the progress of right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who pitched 1 2/3 innings on May 10 in an Arizona Complex League game, which was his first game action since suffering a right-elbow injury on April 26 of 2023. Marquez is recovering from Tommy John surgery and will have a full spring training-type regimen, which will include a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. The Rockies are spacing his ACL appearances out far enough that he'll be able to restart his rehab clock. Between ACL appearances, Marquez is throwing in extended spring camp as he builds his right arm back up. Barring a setback in his recovery, the 29-year-old could rejoin Colorado's starting rotation around the middle of the 2024 season.

Sun Mar 312:39German Marquez Set To Begin Throwing Bullpen Sessions This Week
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) is scheduled to start throwing bullpen sessions this week, according to general manager Bill Schmidt. Marquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery last season, hasn't had any bullpen sessions since his surgery. The 29-year-old veteran started just four games last season before landing on the injured list with an elbow issue. In those four starts, he compiled a 4.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 17:3 K/BB Ratio over 20 innings. The Rockies GM noted that Marquez should make it back to the starting rotation after the 2024 All-Star break, barring any setbacks. Marquez has had effective stints throughout his eight-year career but he's hard to trust every time he takes the mound due to his team context and home ballpark.

Fri Feb 1616:30German Marquez Throwing Off A Mound In Camp
Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who hasn't pitched in a big-league game since April 26, 2023, due to Tommy John surgery, threw a bullpen session in spring training on Friday. Marquez still has a ways to go in his recovery from elbow reconstruction and isn't expected to return to the team's starting rotation until after the All-Star break, so he should go undrafted in all single-year mixed leagues in 2024. The 28-year-old Venezuelan had a career-worst 4.95 ERA (4.71 FIP) and 1.36 WHIP with 63 walks and 150 strikeouts in 181 2/3 innings over 31 starts for the Rockies in his last full season in 2022. Marquez has had an ERA under 4.00 just twice in his eight major-league seasons, and not since the shortened 2020 season, when he made only 13 starts.

Tue May 2 202321:51German Marquez Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery
Colorado Rockies right-handed hurler German Marquez (elbow) will require Tommy John surgery for his elbow injury sustained in his last start on April 26 before landing on the injured list, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. That will keep the 28-year-old out until the middle of next season at the earliest. Marquez was in the midst of his eighth season in the big leagues and was running a 4.95 ERA, 21.3% strikeout rate, 1.10 WHIP and two wins across four starts. He's a solid arm in real life, but his fantasy value has always been limited because of his home park. Marquez isn't a significant loss for fantasy managers and can be replaced relatively easily by someone on the waiver wire.

Fri Apr 28 202318:32German Marquez Could Require Surgery
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (triceps) could require season-ending surgery. The right-hander told reporters on Friday that he might need to get Tommy John surgery. Marquez exited during Wednesday's start after experiencing pain in his triceps. Normally, players are optimistic in these situations, so to hear Marquez say he might need season-ending surgery isn't a good sign. He's set to undergo another MRI exam and receive a second opinion on Monday. Fantasy managers will likely have to wait until then before they get a better idea on his injury.

Wed Apr 26 202316:32German Marquez Dealing With Pain In Triceps
Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (triceps) had an exam in Cleveland after leaving his start Wednesday early against the Guardians. Marquez is dealing with pain in his right triceps, but not his forearm, where his previous injury was. A team doctor is encouraged, but Marquez will have an MRI exam in Denver on Thursday. The 28-year-old just came off the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation, so hopefully he can avoid another trip back to the IL after allowing three runs on six hits (one homer) while walking one and striking out four in just 3 2/3 innings in a loss Wednesday. We'll know more on Thursday, but fantasy managers should prepare for the worst.

Wed Apr 26 202314:44German Marquez Leaves With Apparent Arm Injury Wednesday
Colorado Rockies pitcher German Marquez left Wednesday's game in the fourth inning with an apparent arm injury. It's a significant incident as Wednesday marked Marquez's return to the rotation after he served a 15-day stint on the injured list with right forearm inflammation. The veteran right-hander surrendered three earned runs on six hits -- including a homer -- against the Guardians before leaving with two outs in the fourth frame. It's obviously a setback for Marquez personally but also for a Rockies rotation that ranks 27th with a 5.87 ERA on the season while they've predictably struggled at Coors Field in Colorado where the rotation has turned in a 6.40 ERA on the season.

Tue Apr 25 202321:48German Marquez Returning Wednesday
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (forearm) will come off the injured list to start Wednesday's matchup with the Cleveland Guardians, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. In a corresponding move, right-hander Jose Urena was designated for assignment. The 28-year-old Marquez was off to a decent start before going on the shelf, pitching to a 4.41 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 13 strikeouts and two wins across 16.1 innings. He'll never have a lot of value, assuming he keeps pitching at Coors Field, but he still gives fantasy managers solid volume.

Mon Apr 24 202314:10German Marquez Could Return This Week
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (forearm) threw his second full bullpen session on Sunday and reported no issues. Manager Bud Black said that Marquez is "on track" to return to the starting rotation soon, possibly as early as this week. "It's looking good for a return," Black said. The 28-year-old right-hander can return as soon as Wednesday from the 15-day injured list, but it's more likely that he'll return to start at some point this weekend in a series at Coors Field against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Marquez is the most attractive fantasy starter for the Rockies, but that's not saying all that much. In his three starts so far in 2023, he has a 4.41 ERA (4.49 FIP), 0.92 WHIP, two walks and 13 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings pitched.

Wed Apr 12 202316:06German Marquez Goes On IL, Rockies Recall Nolan Jones
The Colorado Rockies placed starting pitcher German Marquez (forearm) on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right forearm injury and recalled infielder/outfielder Nolan Jones from Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Marquez doesn't have any structural damage in his arm, so he should come off the IL when eligible. Colorado's ace has made three starts this year and has allowed eight runs on 13 hits (three home runs allowed) while walking only two and striking out 13 in 16 1/3 innings pitched. Like most of the team's pitchers, he's best used as a streamer on the road. Jones, the team's No. 17 prospect per MLB Pipeline, already had six home runs and 14 RBI at Triple-A before his call-up, but it's unclear if he'll see enough playing time in Colorado to warrant fantasy attention outside of NL-only leagues.

Tue Apr 11 202308:13Rockies Hopeful About German Marquez's Injury
Colorado Rockies starter German Marquez (forearm) left Monday's start prematurely after experiencing right forearm tightness before the sixth inning. However, after the contest, both the 28-year-old and the club were optimistic about the ailment, and he only left the game as a precaution. There's still more to come, but so far, it's good news for the Rockies, who are hoping to have Marquez cleared for his next start. He owns a 4.41 ERA, 20.6% strikeout rate, 3.2% walk rate, and 0.92 WHIP with two victories over three starts. The righty is a solid arm considering he pitches at Coors Field, but that severely hurts his fantasy value, and fantasy managers should only roster Marquez in deeper leagues.
