Tue Sep 1712:06Hunter Greene To Throw Live Batting Practice
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Tuesday in Cincinnati, according to manager David Bell. It's possible Greene could return to the starting rotation and make two starts before the end of the 2024 season. Greene is working his way back from right-elbow soreness, and this will be his second live batting practice session. For fantasy managers still playing for a championship this year, the 25-year-old Greene could still be an asset down the stretch after going 9-4 with a career-best 2.83 ERA (3.42 FIP), a 1.02 WHIP and 162 strikeouts in 143 1/3 innings pitched over his 24 starts for the Reds this year. The former second overall pick in 2017 hasn't pitched in a big-league game since Aug. 13, though, so he could be on an innings limit when he returns from the injured list.UPDATE: Green threw three simulated "innings" of 20, 20 and 10 pitches and said he felt great. His next outing could be in the big leagues this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Fri Sep 1312:13Hunter Greene Nearing Return To Reds Rotation
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow), who was put on the injured list on Aug. 17 as a precaution due to right-elbow soreness, said he felt good after throwing live batting practice on Sept. 11 in St. Louis. Greene threw around 25 pitches in that session and plans on having a longer session on Saturday in Minnesota. After that, the next step would be to pitch in a major-league game in Cincinnati during the team's Sept. 17-22 homestand. "My focus has been making sure that my mindset continues to be me versus you," Greene said. "I think that's really important when you're going through this process, is keeping that competitive mind and being able to kind of close that gap of, you know, kind of that feeling of being out for a month and not gracing a big league mound." The first-time All-Star should be lined up for a few starts before the end of the regular season in what has been a breakout season.

Thu Sep 512:28Hunter Greene To Throw Bullpens Thursday And Sunday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) is slated to throw bullpen sessions on Thursday and Sunday, according to manager David Bell. It's the first time that Greene has thrown off a mound since landing on the injured list in the middle of August due to right-elbow inflammation, so it's a big step in his recovery. The 25-year-old will eventually need to progress to facing live hitters and will probably need a minor-league rehab assignment, too, so fantasy managers probably can't expect him back in the big leagues for another couple weeks. There are only a few weeks left in the 2024 regular season as well, so there's no guarantee that Greene is going to make much of a difference in fantasy down the stretch. The former second overall pick in 2017 has had a successful 2024 season overall, though, going 9-4 with a 2.83 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 162 strikeouts over 143 1/3 innings in his 24 starts.

Fri Aug 3012:12Hunter Greene Resumes Throwing
Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) has resumed throwing as he prepares to return this season. There remains no timetable for Greene's return from the 15-day injured list, but the good news is the Reds are expecting the 25-year-old to return before the end of the regular season at the end of September. However, for fantasy purposes, Greene isn't going to have much time at all to make a difference for teams that are in the mix for a title. He was shut down several weeks ago with inflammation in his right elbow, so it's going to take him some time to ramp back up. Greene made his first All-Star squad in 2024 in his third year in the big leagues and has been excellent for fantasy managers with a 9-4 record, career-best 2.83 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and a 162:53 K:BB in 143 1/3 innings over his 24 starts. Just don't expect much from him when/if he returns late in September.

Wed Aug 2816:41Hunter Greene Won't Be Ready To Return Soon
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene (elbow) underwent an MRI exam and obtained three opinions on his injured right elbow, with no structural damage to be found. It's great news since he had Tommy John surgery in 2019. However, Greene won't be ready anytime soon. "It looks like I need about two weeks or so for the inflammation to go down, to go away," Greene said. "Then I'll start throwing again." There remains hope that Greene can return in 2024, but he's quickly running out of time to make an impact for fantasy managers still chasing a title. In a best-case scenario, he's likely to make only one or two more starts if he actually makes it back. The 25-year-old former second overall pick in 2017 was a first-time All-Star this year and has had a fantastic season, going 9-4 with a career-best 2.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and solid 27.8% strikeout rate in his 24 starts.

Wed Aug 1400:08Hunter Greene Extends Quality Start Streak To Seven Games Tuesday
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene turned in another strong start in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Cardinals. Greene pitched seven innings, allowing a single run on four hits (including a solo home run) and a walk with eight strikeouts. The 25-year-old has performed like a former fantasy prospect this season, going 9-4 with a 2.83 ERA, a 10.17 K/9 rate, and a 3.33 BB/9 rate in 24 starts and 143 1/3 IP. He has been on an even more impressive run over his last seven starts, resulting in seven quality starts with a 0.98 ERA. He will have a good chance to extend his quality start streak to eight in his next start, which will be at the scuffling Blue Jays.

Fri Aug 908:07Hunter Greene Collects Another Quality Start
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene stayed hot in Thursday's no-decision versus the Miami Marlins. Greene tossed his sixth straight quality start, firing six innings of three-run ball, allowing six hits, two walks and striking out five batters. The right-hander has been rolling lately and has a 1.13 ERA over his last five starts. On the season, Greene owns a 2.90 ERA to go along with 10.17 K/9 and 12 quality starts. At this point, the only concern for Greene managers would be if the Reds decide to limit him down the stretch, with a playoff appearance unlikely. The talented flamethrower will look to pick up his seventh straight quality start when he faces off against the division rival St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday.

Sat Aug 323:30Hunter Greene Tallies Season-High 11 Punchouts
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene tossed six innings of one-hit ball on Saturday afternoon en route to earning his eighth victory of the season. He allowed just one free pass and struck out a season-high 11 batters. The former second-round pick was in complete control this afternoon and never got into any trouble. Entering this start, the right-hander has begun to take a significant step forward in his development, holding a near-perfect 0.57 ERA, 0.73 WHIP, and a 10:35 BB:K ratio across his past five outings. Through 130 innings of work this summer, the hard-throwing right-hander sits with a strong 2.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 50:149 BB:K ratio. Under the hood, the 24-year-old boasts a 4.9% barrel rate, 33.0% hard-hit rate, and a 27.1% K rate which are all well above the average marks. Greene remains a top starting pitcher in all leagues and will always be a popular play in DFS formats.

Tue Jul 2307:56Hunter Greene Continues Impressive Season
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene put together another strong outing in Monday's victory versus the Atlanta Braves. The right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball with three walks and seven strikeouts to improve to 7-4 on the season. Greene continues to put together a very strong campaign and the outing lowers his ERA to 3.14 on the season. The three walks were not ideal, but they haven't been an issue for Green throughout the season and managers shouldn't worry. Greene continues to cement himself as one of the better arms in the National League this season and will look to keep it going when he faces the Tampa Bays on the road this Sunday.

Tue Jul 2300:27Hunter Greene Fans Seven In Monday's Win
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene continued to build on his strong season in Monday's 4-1 win over the Braves. Greene improved to 7-4, tossing seven scoreless innings with two hits, three walks, and seven strikeouts. He also hit a batter. The 24-year-old has finally started pitching like the top fantasy prospect he once was and owns a 3.14 ERA, a 10.20 K/9 rate, and a 3.68 BB/9 rate in 20 starts and 117 1/3 IP. He should have an opportunity to turn in another strong start in his next scheduled matchup at the Rays.

Thu Jul 1120:23Hunter Greene Whiffs 10, Posts Quality Start
Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene earned a win over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday afternoon, posting a quality start with 10 strikeouts. Greene surrendered a run on two hits and two walks, running his record to 6-4 with a 3.34 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, and 126 strikeouts in 110 innings. It was his first win since June 14th, but Greene now has back-to-back very good starts. He went seven innings last week against the Detroit Tigers and struck out seven batters. Greene will look to continue his streak after the All-Star break, as he will not have another start until after the break.

Sat Jul 622:53Hunter Greene Tosses Seven Scoreless Frames In No-Decision
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene tossed seven scoreless frames on Saturday afternoon. He allowed just three hits and two free passes and struck out seven. The 24-year-old never got into much trouble as he never had more than one baserunner at a time. In his previous start, Greene allowed just one earned run across four frames. While the former second-overall pick has begun to take the next step in his development this season, he has still shown inconsistencies at times, as he has allowed at least four earned runs in five starts. Across 104 frames this season, Greene sits with a solid 3.45 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and a 43:116 BB:K ratio. Greene remains a high-upside starting pitcher in all formats and will be a popular DFS play in his next start, which is tentatively scheduled for July 11 against the Colorado Rockies.

Fri Jun 709:39Hunter Greene K's Eight In Victory
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene picked up his fourth victory of the season against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. After a tough outing in his previous start, which also came against the Cubs, Greene bounced back. The right-hander threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed five hits, four runs, two walks and recorded eight strikeouts. Greene pitcher well for most of the contest, but a pair of two-run homers by Seiya Suzuki and Christopher Morel would hurt the flamethrower. Greene has been putting together a good season for the Reds and is now 4-2 with 3.61 ERA. Next up for the right-hander will be a date at home versus a tough Cleveland Guardians offense.

Sat May 2515:50Hunter Greene Looking To Stay Hot Saturday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene will look to keep the good times rolling when he takes the bump for a Saturday contest against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers. Greene has allowed two earned runs or fewer in four of his last five starts and has tossed 13 1/3 innings of four-run ball over his last two outings with 13 strikeouts against just three walks in that time. For the season, the former second-overall pick has pitched to a 3.22 ERA and a 27% K% across 10 starts and 58 2/3 innings of work while his four-seam fastball sits at a tidy 98.1 mph clip. He has his hands full against a Dodgers club that ranks second in baseball with a .337 wOBA on the season.

Tue Apr 2300:12Hunter Greene Pitches Seven Innings, Takes Loss Monday
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene pitched deep into his start Monday but came away with a loss in Monday's 7-0 game against the Phillies. Greene pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks with six strikeouts. The 24-year-old is now 0-2 with a 4.55 ERA, an 11.71 K/9 rate, and a 3.92 BB/9 rate in his first five starts. The strikeout skills are evident, but Greene is still looking to take the next step toward becoming a consistent fantasy contributor. That may be difficult in his next scheduled start, which will be a tough matchup at the Rangers. This may be a matchup fantasy managers want to avoid.

Sat Mar 3014:12Hunter Greene Aiming To Put Rough Spring Behind Him Saturday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene will be looking to put a rough spring behind him on Saturday afternoon when he takes on the visiting Washington Nationals. Greene was touched up for a 7.20 ERA with 10 walks allowed in five starts and 15 innings pitched in Cactus League action. He still punched out 19 hitters in that time and his spring ERA is somewhat skewed by one outing in which he allowed seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings while his final spring tune-up consisted of one earned run surrendered in three innings of work. The hard-throwing righty posted a 4.82 ERA in 22 starts last season, although his 3.74 SIERA suggests he was far better than that while he punched out a hefty 30.5% of the hitters he faced. He is a strong bounce-back candidate for fantasy managers this season given his underlying data.

Wed Mar 2009:32Hunter Greene Gets Annihilated On Tuesday
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene got rocked against the Los Angeles Angels in Tuesday's Spring Training contest. Greene went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs, two walks and K'd six on the day. The 24-year-old has looked good otherwise this spring with six runs allowed in three starts prior, so managers should not be that worried with his weak performance. The fireballer has shown throughout his career that he can be dominant and rack up K's, but also will having outings like yesterday where he gets lit up. As with many of his teammates, the Reds are expected to take a big step forward and Greene will be a big part of making that a reality in 2024. Greene has an ADP of 122 and he makes for a solid SP3 with very large potential. Even when he gets blown up, he still is a strong source of strikeouts and that should ease the pain of managers looking to capitalize on the good of the flamethrower in 2024.

Wed Feb 2112:36Hunter Greene Working On A Curveball
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene is working on a new curveball in camp this year. Last year, Greene used his fastball 54.4% of the time, his slider 40.3% and his changeup only 5.3%. His fastball averaged 98.3 mph in 2023, the slider was 87.3 mph, and the changeup was 91.1 mph. The new curve is in the low-80s. "It's exciting," Greene said. "(I'll) continue to refine it and work on it, but looking forward to being able to have a good offering this season." The 24-year-old has also thrown a split-fingered fastball, but it's unclear how much he'll use those pitches in 2024. The hard-throwing Greene's fastball could be even more devastating with a slow curve to keep hitters honest. He has plenty of fantasy upside, but he hasn't thrown more than 125 2/3 innings in his first two years in the big leagues.
