Thu Jan 30 2014 | 20:57 | Randy Wells wants to make comeback |
Randy Wells wants to attempt a comeback this season. |
Wells, 31, announced his retirement less than a year ago, but he's getting the itch to pitch again after his right elbow responded well to throwing sessions this winter. The right-hander underwent arthroscopic surgery on the elbow in July of 2012 and then retired in April of 2013 after posting a 6.08 ERA over five Triple-A starts for the Rangers. "It's far-fetched because when you retire, you get off people's radar," Wells said. "We'll see what happens." |

Thu Mar 7 2013 | 19:03 | Randy Wells knocked around Thursday |
Randy Wells was lit up for three runs on six hits and a walk over four innings in Thursday's tie versus the Dodgers. |
He struck out three and served up a home run. Wells entered camp with an outside shot at the final spot in the Rangers' rotation, but he's probably already pitched himself out of contention with a 2.00 WHIP over his first three spring appearances. |

Rangers signed RHP Randy Wells to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring trianing. |
Wells had a 5.34 ERA in 28 2/3 innings this year with the Cubs before requiring surgery on his right elbow. He should be fine for the start of the 2013 season but probably won't make the Rangers' Opening Day roster. |

Cubs sent RHP Randy Wells outright to Triple-A Iowa. |

Fri Jun 22 2012 | 08:44 | Sveum unsure who will fill Dempster's spot |
Cubs manager Dale Sveum is unsure who will fill Ryan Dempster's (lat) spot in the rotation the next time out. |
Randy Wells took his spot Wednesday but struggled, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over just 3 2/3 innings. ``We'll weigh our options,'' Sveum said. ``You've got other people. The [ Chris ] Volstads , the [ Chris ] Rusins are down there [in the minors]. We'll weigh our options and see where we're at.'' Volstad holds a 4.78 ERA and 1.51 WHIP since being demoted to Triple-A, but Rusin has been underwhelming, as well, with marks of 4.56 and 1.34, respectively. The Cubs were idle Thursday, so they might just skip the spot the next time through. |

Wed Jun 20 2012 | 23:31 | Randy Wells roughed up by White Sox |
Starting in place of an injured Ryan Dempster, Randy Wells allowed three runs on five hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings of Wednesday's loss to the White Sox. |
He recorded zero strikeouts. Wells is likely in line for one or two more starts in place of the Cubs ace, but he can be safely ignored in all but the deepest of NL-only leagues. |

Mon Jun 18 2012 | 16:41 | Wells to start Wednesday vs. White Sox |
Randy Wells will start Wednesday against the White Sox. |
He'll start in place of Ryan Dempster, who was placed on the disabled Monday with right lat tightness. Wells has an ugly 4.50 ERA and 11/16 K/BB ratio over 22 innings with the Cubs this season. He can be avoided in most fantasy leagues. |

Sat May 19 2012 | 18:35 | Cubs recall Wells from Triple-A Iowa |
Cubs recalled RHP Randy Wells from Triple-A Iowa. |
As expected. Wells takes the roster spot of the retired Kerry Wood. This is a transaction of need for Chicago and not a deserved promotion for Wells. The 29-year-old posted a 6.23 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and 5/9 K/BB ratio in two spot starts with the Cubs earlier this season. He offers little in the way of fanntasy upside. |

Sat May 19 2012 | 14:14 | Wells expected to be recalled from Triple-A |
Randy Wells is expected to be recalled from Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. |
He'll likely replace Kerry Wood on the active roster. Wells, 29, posted a 6.23 ERA, 2.08 WHIP and 5/9 K/BB ratio in two spot starts with the Cubs this season. He offers very little in the way of upside. |

Sat Apr 28 2012 | 21:53 | Wells struggles against Phillies |
Randy Wells struggled against the Phillies on Saturday, allowing four runs on three hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work. |
Wells struck out three and walked four in the game. He cruised through the first three innings without allowing a hit, but the wheels fell off the train as the Phillies batted around in the fourth inning. Wells has been a fill-in in the Cubs rotation for the injured Ryan Dempster, but with Dempster due back on Thursday his future role with the Cubs is in jeopardy. He'll either be demoted back to Triple-A Iowa or hang around as the long man in the bullpen. |

Sun Apr 22 2012 | 18:11 | Randy Wells rocky in first start of 2012 |
Randy Wells allowed two runs on six hits and five walks in five innings of Sunday's loss to the Reds. |
He struck out two. Wells is lucky he didn't surrender more runs in his first start of 2012. In line for potentially just one more outing while Ryan Dempster recovers from a right quad strain, Wells isn't worth a look outside of exceptionally deep NL-only leagues. |

Sun Apr 22 2012 | 12:27 | Randy Wells recalled |

Thu Mar 29 2012 | 11:17 | Cubs option Randy Wells to Triple-A Iowa |
Cubs optioned RHP Randy Wells to Triple-A Iowa. |
And with that, it appears that the Cubs will go with Ryan Dempster, Matt Garza, Paul Maholm, Chris Volstad and Jeff Samardzija in the starting rotation. Recent reports suggested that Wells could stick with the big club as a reliever, but the Cubs are better off keeping him stretched out as a starter in the minors. The 29-year-old right-hander is making $2.705 million this season, so it will be interesting to see whether the Cubs listen to trade offers. |

Wed Mar 14 2012 | 18:28 | Randy Wells spins three shutout frames |
Randy Wells held the Brewers in check Wednesday, twirling three shutout innings on just two hits and no walks. |
He didn't record a strikeout and has just one in 5 2/3 spring innings, but also hasn't given up a run. Wells entered spring training technically in competition for a rotation spot, but he'll have to pitch poorly to not break camp as one of the starting five, and obviously that hasn't been the case so far. |

Tue Jan 17 2012 | 19:56 | Cubs, Wells agree on one-year contract |
The Cubs and RHP Randy Wells avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.705 million contract. |
Wells was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter. The 29-year-old right-hander compiled a 4.99 ERA and 82/47 K/BB ratio across 135 1/3 frames for the Cubbies last season. While there's little fantasy upside, he should enter spring training with a rotation spot. |

Sun Sep 25 2011 | 18:22 | Randy Wells suffers hard-luck loss |
Randy Wells suffered a loss despite an eight-inning complete game Sunday, giving up three runs on six hits and three walks in a defeat at the hands of the Cardinals. |
Wells was spotted a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning but served up solo shots in the seventh and eighth to fall to 7-6 on the year. He's put together a nice second half, holding a 4.04 ERA and 1.21 WHIP over 14 starts to give him some momentum heading into the offseason. He should be locked into a rotation spot for next year despite a 4.99 ERA and 1.39 WHIP for the season. |

Thu Sep 15 2011 | 23:24 | Wells knocked around by Reds |
Randy Wells yielded five runs on seven hits and two walks over just 4 1/3 innings in Thursday's loss to the Reds. |
Wells was spotted a 4-0 lead before he even took the mound but was unable to hold it. Brandon Phillips and Chris Heisey both took him deep, though they were both solo shots. Wells had been on a roll of late, posting a 1.26 ERA over his last four starts and a 3.39 ERA in the second half. He'll try to get back on the right track next week against the Brewers. |
