RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder surgery) has been shut down for the second time this season during his comeback attempt after experiencing pain in his throwing shoulder Saturday during a rehab start for Triple-A Nashville. He will be examined again by orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. Last year, when he played for the Miami Marlins, Alvarez had season-ending shoulder surgery on July 28. "He pitched three innings and had to come out," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "Went out for the fourth to warm up and was feeling some pain in his shoulder again. Shut him down, unfortunately. Right when we get on the verge of having him back here, something pops up. That's why you go through this rehab process, to try to incrementally get him ready to pitch here. Again, it's a setback. He was looking so forward to coming back and helping his team. It's pretty demoralizing. I know he's having a tough time with it right now."

His velocity was 89 to 94, which kind of surprised me. It's all good going forward to the next step."
