Sat Sep 1411:31Gabriel Moreno Could Return Next Week
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said he is confident that catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) will be back in the lineup soon, possibly as early as this upcoming week. Lovullo said on Friday that the team will assess how Moreno is after he plays five innings at catcher at a camp continuation game at Salt River Fields on Saturday with no restrictions. Moreno has been on the 10-day injured list with a groin strain since Aug. 6, but Lovullo said it's possible he could return for the series in Colorado against the Rockies next week. However, there is some concern about Moreno returning in the 5,000-foot elevation. Although the 24-year-old backstop hasn't been much of a fantasy contributor in 2024 with only five home runs and 41 RBI in 275 at-bats, the Snakes surely could use him back as they try to get back to the postseason this October. Rookie Adrian Del Castillo has filled in nicely of late for the D-backs.

Wed Sep 1112:22Gabriel Moreno Ramping Up His Activity
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) has started running arcs at around 80 percent effort and is scheduled to catch a bullpen session on Wednesday as he begins to ramp up his activity as he recovers from a left-groin strain. Moreno left the team's Aug. 5 contest after running out a ground-ball single and landed on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 6. An MRI exam revealed a strained left groin muscle. At the time, manager Torey Lovullo said the backstop would be out "weeks, not days," but there is optimism that Moreno will return before the end of the season. The Venezuelan catcher has hit a career-low .262 (72-for-275) this year and provided only five homers and 41 RBI in 86 games before his injury, but the D-backs would love to have him back as their starting catcher sooner than later as they make their final push for another postseason appearance.

Thu Aug 821:14Gabriel Moreno To Miss "Weeks" With Groin Strain
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) is going to be out for "weeks," manager Torey Lovullo said on Thursday. There's still more information to come as the club awaits more details from imaging on the severity of the injury, and Lovullo said he's going to remain optimistic that Moreno can return before the end of the season. Moreno left Monday's game against the hosting Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field in the second inning after running out a ground-ball single before being placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with a left-groin strain. The 24-year-old former top prospect had been hitting well in his last month of action before going down, batting .345 (30-for-87), with three homers, 17 RBI, and 14 runs scored in his last 26 games since June 21. While Moreno is sidelined, the switch-hitting Jose Herrera should absorb the bulk of at-bats behind the plate for the D-backs.

Tue Aug 616:01Gabriel Moreno Heading To Injured List
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) is headed to the injured list on Tuesday with a groin injury and will likely start on the 10-day IL, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Moreno suffered a left-groin strain in Monday's extra-inning victory over the hosting Cleveland Guardians, and it sounds as though he's a candidate to miss well beyond the 10 days on the IL. Fantasy managers should plan accordingly. The D-backs have called up catching prospect Adrian Del Castillo from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move, and he's expected to split the catching duties in Arizona with Jose Herrera while Moreno is out. The 24-year-old Moreno heads to the shelf slashing .262/.344/.385 with only five home runs and 41 RBI in 86 games in his second full season in the big leagues. There's a good chance we won't see him again in the big leagues until the final month of the regular season.

Mon Aug 520:15Gabriel Moreno Suffers Strained Groin On Monday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (groin) was removed from Monday's contest early against the hosting Cleveland Guardians with a strained left groin. The good news for fantasy managers is that Moreno went 2-for-2 with a solo home run in the contest before leaving early. He was replaced behind the plate by Jose Herrera. Moreno will certainly undergo testing on his injured groin on Tuesday, but fantasy managers should expect a trip to the 10-day injured list at the very least. Herrera is currently the only other catcher on Arizona's big-league roster, so he's in line for a big jump in playing time if Moreno indeed goes on the IL. Losing Moreno for any amount of time will be bad news for a contending D-backs squad. Coming into Monday's affair, Moreno was slashing .256/.340/.370 with only four homers, 40 RBI and three steals in 85 games.

Wed Jul 3115:10Gabriel Moreno Out With Wrist Injury
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (wrist) is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday for the series finale against the visiting Washington Nationals after taking a foul ball off his left wrist on Tuesday, but manager Torey Lovullo said that he's available off the bench. Moreno's injury doesn't sound serious, but the D-backs will give him a rest in a day game after a night contest. Jose Herrera will do the catching and will hit ninth against Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore. With another day off coming on Thursday, fantasy managers should get Moreno back in Friday's series opener against the hosting Pittsburgh Pirates. The 24-year-old backstop has looked good at the plate since the All-Star break, going 12-for-34 (.353) with three doubles, nine RBI and even a steal in 10 games. Moreno's average is down after batting .284 in 2023, and he's provided only four homers in 82 games.

Fri Jul 1921:32Gabriel Moreno Rattles Off Three Hits In Win On Friday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno rattled off three hits on Friday, all against Cubs starter Justin Steele, in Arizona's 5-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Moreno had two singles and a double on top of recording two runs and an RBI. It was the 24-year-old's third three hit game of July as he increased his OPS to .710 on the season. Moreno has had a solid July at the plate, a great sign after a slow start to the season. His .931 OPS in July greatly outpaces his .580 OPS in May and his .730 OPS in June. With a .309 wOBA and a .320 xwOBA, Moreno should see more positive regression coming his way. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues looking for help at the catcher spot may want to look his way. He should get his next shot in the lineup Saturday against Cubs scheduled started Kyle Hendricks.

Thu Jul 1119:10Gabriel Moreno Back After One-Game Absence
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (back) has returned to the starting lineup on Thursday against the visiting Atlanta Braves in the series finale after being scratched from Wednesday's contest due to lower back tightness. Moreno is behind the plate and is batting second against Braves left-hander Max Fried. Against the southpaw, Moreno will move all the way up to the two-hole for only the eighth time in 2024. It's been a bit of a disappointing season for the 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher in his second full MLB season, as he enters Thursday's game with a .251/.333/.379 slash line, four home runs and 31 RBI in 69 games played. However, he'll have more DFS upside while batting second and has hit .276 (21-for-76) against left-handers this year, albeit without any home runs.

Wed Jul 1020:39Gabriel Moreno Scratched With Back Tightness
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (back) has been scratched from Wednesday's starting lineup against the visiting Atlanta Braves due to lower-back discomfort. However, Moreno will be available off the bench, according to the Diamondbacks. Jose Herrera will now catch right-hander Slade Cecconi and will hit ninth in the batting order against Braves veteran right-hander Charlie Morton. The fact that the 24-year-old Moreno is available off the bench on Wednesday means his injury probably isn't all that serious and he could be back in the starting lineup for the series finale against Atlanta on Thursday. Moreno has been an average hitter in 2024, but he's looked better of late, going 13-for-44 (.296) with two home runs, three doubles, nine RBI and a stolen base in his last 13 games since June 15. Check back on Thursday to see if he's back behind the plate.

Tue Jul 219:00Gabriel Moreno Activated On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) has been activated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Moreno will make his return to the field after missing two weeks due to a left thumb sprain. He'll serve as the catcher and bat sixth versus right-hander Bobby Miller. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Moreno back in their lineups ahead of first pitch.

Sun Jun 3014:16Gabriel Moreno Could Be Activated On Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) appears to be extremely close to making a return to the field. The organization believes that Moreno could be activated as early as Tuesday. The 24-year-old was placed on the injured list last Saturday due to a sprained left thumb. The D-Backs have said they don't believe Moreno will require a rehab assignment. That being said, Moreno should be back in the D-Backs lineup in the middle of the week. Tucker Barnhart figures to see additional playing time until Moreno returns.

Thu Jun 2712:11Gabriel Moreno Expected To Have Minimal Injured List Stint
The Arizona Diamondbacks are confident that catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) will have a minimum stint on the 10-day injured list, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Moreno still has boxes to check off with his sprained left thumb, notably catching right-hander Zac Gallen's (hamstring) bullpen session on Thursday and playing an Arizona Complex League game over the weekend. He has been hitting off a tee and playing catch. Barring a setback the rest of this week, Moreno is in line to come off the IL for the start of a series in Los Angeles against the division-rival Dodgers next Tuesday. Tucker Barnhart and Jose Herrera have stepped up with Moreno hurt, with Barnhart getting starter's reps. Lovullo said on Tuesday that catching is the bigger hurdle for Moreno than hitting, specifically the ability to square up pitches.

Tue Jun 2521:53Gabriel Moreno To Catch Bullpen Session Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) will catch Zac Gallen's bullpen session on Thursday. Manager Torey Lovullo said before Tuesday's game against the visiting Minnesota Twins that he's optimistic Moreno will be able to return after missing the minimum 10 days on the injured list. Moreno sprained his left thumb on a foul tip in this past Friday's contest against the Philadelphia Phillies, but it sounds like he could return to the D-backs during the first week of July and skip a brief minor-league rehab assignment. Fantasy managers in shallow leagues should be able to find better stashes than the 24-year-old contact-hitting backstop, who's slashing an uninspiring .230/.313/.346 with three home runs, 11 doubles, 26 RBI, and 23 runs scored in 217 trips to the plate as Arizona's everyday catcher in 2024.

Sat Jun 2213:40Gabriel Moreno Placed On The 10-Day Injured List
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday, June 22. Moreno left Friday's game early after suffering a thumb injury. Fortunately, the x-rays came back negative, but Arizona is leaning on the side of caution for their young backstop and is sitting him for at least the next 10 days. In a corresponding move, the Diamondbacks promoted Jose Herrera from Triple-A to serve as the backup catcher to now-starter Tucker Barnhart. Fantasy managers should not be too concerned about Moreno's status, as it looks like he avoided a major injury. Through 61 games this season, the 24-year-old has struggled with a .230 AVG which is a significant drop compared to his .284 and .319 AVG he held the previous two seasons. Barnhart is worth adding in NL-only formats for the time being, as he should be in line to start most games and could be a sneaky play in DFS throughout the next week.

Fri Jun 2122:23Gabriel Moreno Leaves Friday With Sprained Thumb
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (thumb) left Friday's game early against the Philadelphia Phillies with a sprained left thumb. Before departing, Moreno at least was able to do damage for his fantasy managers, going 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in the third inning and a run scored. He was replaced behind the plate by Tucker Barnhart in the sixth inning. It's unclear exactly how serious the 24-year-old's injury is, but we wouldn't be surprised at all if it requires a trip to the injured list. For however long Moreno is out, Barnhart would serve as Arizona's primary backstop. Moreno excelled in his first year in the desert in 2023 with a .284 average and also won a Gold Glove, but he's been struggling offensively in 2024, as he entered Friday's contest with a .223/.308/.324 line with only two homers and 24 RBI in 60 games played.UPDATE: Manager Torey Lovullo said X-rays were negative on Moreno's thumb.

Sat May 2518:40Gabriel Moreno Out Of Lineup Saturday Night
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is out of the lineup Saturday night against the Miami Marlins. Moreno will take a seat on the bench in favor of veteran Tucker Barnhart, who will bat eighth. Moreno is hitting .228 with one home run, 17 RBI and 13 runs scored this season. The young catcher has outstanding rates of 14.1 K% and 12.7 BB%, but his BABIP is only .265 thus far. Expect better numbers from Moreno with continued playing time. Moreno was 0-3 in the series opener on Friday night.

Tue May 1408:29Gabriel Moreno Launches First Home Run Of The Season
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno went 1-for-2 in the batter's box on Monday with three walks and his first home run of the season. In 33 games this season, Moreno has a .248/.350/.356 slash line with a stellar 15:14 BB:K. The 24-year-old launched only seven home runs last season and looks to settle in around that number again this campaign. However, while Moreno lacks in power, he possesses excellent contact skills and a strong eye at the plate. Currently, Moreno has a 12.0% strikeout rate and 12.8% walk rate, which places him in the top 96th and 86th percentile, respectively, of all qualified hitters. He remains a solid contributor for batting average in standard leagues and should remain rostered in most formats.

Wed May 813:34Gabriel Moreno Back In Action Wednesday
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (illness) is back behind the plate and is batting seventh on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds and right-hander Graham Ashcraft. Moreno had the day off on Sunday against the San Diego Padres and also sat out the series opener on Tuesday against the Reds while being under the weather, but the 24-year-old backstop is feeling good enough to play on Wednesday. Moreno has yet to clear the fences so far in 2024 and is currently hitting .241/.340/.322 with five doubles, one triple, 14 RBI and nine runs scored in 100 plate appearances over 29 games played. He has gone hitless in just two career at-bats against Ashcraft.

Tue May 719:04Gabriel Moreno Out Sick Tuesday
Updating a previous report, Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (illness) is under the weather and is getting the day off on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The hope is that Moreno will be back in the lineup on Wednesday. He's available off the bench on Tuesday, Lovullo said. It's the second straight day that Moreno will be on the bench, as he was also given the day off in the series finale on Sunday against the San Diego Padres. Tucker Barnhart got the start behind the dish and is hitting eighth in the order against Reds right-hander Frankie Montas, who is making his first start since coming off the injured list. The 24-year-old Moreno is hitting .241 (21-for-87) with 14 RBI, but he has yet to clear the fences in 2024.

Tue May 716:32Gabriel Moreno Sitting Against Reds
Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno is not in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Tucker Barnhart will do the catching for right-hander Zac Gallen and will hit eighth against Reds right-hander Frankie Montas. It's the second straight game that Moreno will take a seat on the bench in favor of Barnhart. The D-backs are just trying to give the young catcher some extra rest early in the season. The 24-year-old should be back in there on Wednesday. Through his first 87 at-bats of the year, he's hitting .241/.340/.322 with no home runs and 14 RBI. Barnhart is hitting .750 in four career at-bats against Montas but will be a low-upside play in DFS at the bottom of Arizona's lineup.
