Tue Sep 1700:50Ezequiel Tovar Hits 24th Homer Of Season Monday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar played his part offensively in Monday's 3-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Tovar went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and two strikeouts. The 23-year-old took a fourth-inning Merrill Kelly offering to the opposite field, landing it in the right-center bullpen for his 24th HR of the season. Tovar's season numbers look good overall, but he has struggled in the second half of the season. He is now slashing .244/.270/.465 in 213 second-half at-bats with 10 HR, 26 RBI, and two stolen bases. This batting average is bolstered by a solid July, as he hit just .200 in August and is hitting .182 in September.

Wed Aug 2800:26Ezequiel Tovar Homers Twice, Plates Four Tuesday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (hernia) had a great game back in the lineup for Tuesday's 9-8 loss to the Marlins. Tovar, who missed Monday's game due to a sports hernia, went 3-for-4 with a double, a solo home run, a two-run HR, four RBI, and a strikeout. The 23-year-old went back-to-back with Charlie Blackmon in the first inning, launching a 456-foot bomb to straightaway center. He victimized Roddery Munoz again in the second inning, lining a fastball into the left-field seats. This performance was encouraging for fantasy managers, for while Tovar's season numbers are fine, he owns a poor .202/.224/.372 slash line in 94 August at-bats.

Tue Aug 2716:19Ezequiel Tovar Returns Against Marlins
As expected, Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (hernia) is back at shortstop and hitting in the two-hole on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins and right-hander Roddery Munoz at Coors Field. Tovar was held out of Monday's contest due to a sports hernia that he's been dealing with, but it's obviously not serious enough to keep him out for an extended period of time. The Rockies have nothing left to play for in 2024 but pride, though, so if the 23-year-old continues to struggle offensively, they could consider shutting him down. Tovar has hit .271/.296/.455 on the year with a career-high 19 home runs and 55 RBI in 127 games in his second full season in the big leagues. However, he's struggled in the dog days of August, going 16-for-90 (.178) with a homer, six doubles, three RBI and 32 strikeouts in 21 games. Fantasy managers have to be worried that his hernia is the reason for his recent cold stretch.

Tue Aug 2712:30Ezequiel Tovar Likely To Play On Tuesday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (hernia), who was given Monday against the Miami Marlin off as he battles through a sports hernia, is likely to play on Tuesday at Coors Field. We now have a little more insight to why Tovar has struggled so much in the month of August. Those struggles could continue, too, as this is something that will most likely be bothering him the rest of the way. The 23-year-old Venezuelan infielder has gone just 16-for-90 (.178) with a homer, six doubles, three RBI, three walks and 32 strikeouts in 94 plate appearances over 21 games in August. Tovar is still hitting a very respectable .271 (144-for-532) on the year with 19 home runs, but his on-base percentage has now dipped below .300, and fantasy managers have to be concerned that he could continue to struggle while dealing with a sports hernia.

Mon Jul 2219:10Ezequiel Tovar Returns From Illness
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar (illness) is back at shortstop and is hitting second in the order for the Rockies for Monday's series opener against the visiting Boston Red Sox and right-hander Tanner Houck. Tovar didn't play in Sunday's series finale against the division-rival San Francisco Giants due to flu-like symptoms. He's not quite 100 percent but is good enough to return to action on Monday. Despite not being 100 percent, fantasy managers should put the 22-year-old Venezuelan back in their starting lineups. After going hitless in his first seven games in the month of July, Tovar will carry an eight-game hitting streak into Monday's contest. Over his current streak, he's gone 15-for-34 (.441) with four home runs, four doubles, nine RBI and seven runs scored. Tovar hasn't faced Houck in his career.

Mon Jul 1500:55Ezequiel Tovar Hits First Two Homers Of July
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar finished his first half in style on Sunday, popping two homers in an 8-5 victory over the New York Mets. Tovar finished the day 3-for-4 with two runs, two homers, and four RBI. After a miserable stretch in early July where he went 0-for-28 with 11 strikeouts, Tovar has gone 11-for-25 (.440) in his last six games, hitting safely in each of them. The 22-year-old has been solid for fantasy this year, but his advanced numbers don't back it up and he has been trending down for some time. His fantasy owners will have to hope that his last few games get him on track for the second half.

Wed Jul 319:24Ezequiel Tovar Getting A Day Off
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar will get the day off on Wednesday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers at Coors Field. It's a rare day of rest for Tovar, as this is just his third game off of the 2024 season. The 22-year-old shortstop is having a solid year for himself in his second full season for the Rockies, slashing .276/.304/.459 with 12 home runs, 24 doubles, two triples, 37 RBI, four stolen bases and 42 runs scored in 84 games. But after going 0-for-10 with four strikeouts in the first two games of July, the Rockies have decided to give their young star shortstop a breather. He'll be replaced at the 6 on Wednesday by Aaron Schunk, who will bat ninth in the order against Brewers right-hander Colin Rea. Schunk has only played in three big-league games to this point and is searching for his first hit after his first four plate appearances.

Sat Jun 109:43Ezequiel Tovar Hits Eighth Home Run Friday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar went 3-for-4 with a solo home run in Friday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers. Tovar recorded one RBI and also scored twice in the contest. The 22-year-old has been hot lately, going 32-for-91 (.352) since May 9 (20 games), including 11 multi-hit performances. On the season he's slashing .294/.328/.481 with a .351 wOBA and 114 wRC+. The right-handed hitter has a surprisingly low Contact% (66.9%) and high K% (30.0%) for someone batting close to .300. An unsustainable .400 BABIP combined with those other stats spells regression, but for now he's hot and you're happy he's your starting shortstop in redraft leagues.

Wed May 2208:58Ezequiel Tovar Sends Two To The Seats
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar had a big night despite his team losing on Tuesday night versus the Oakland Athletics. The 22-year-old went 2-for-5 on the evening with both of his hits being solo homeruns. Tovar has had a rollercoaster of a season, but has caught fire over the past two week with 18 hits over his last 54 at-bats to go along with four homers and nine RBI. Tovar is aggressive at the plate and draws his fair share of strikeouts, but he has also been making good contact. The Rockies will be home for six straight games after their series with the Athletics on Thursday and should be all lineups as he continues to swing a hot bat.

Sun May 512:51Ezequiel Tovar On The Bench For First Time This Year
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is on the bench for the first time this season on Sunday against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. Tovar started the Rockies' first 33 games of the year and is currently hitting .258/.303/.379 with three home runs, seven doubles, 12 RBI, three stolen bases and 13 runs scored in 143 plate appearances to start his third season in the big leagues. The day off comes at a good time, as the free-swinging 22-year-old shortstop has struggled at the plate of late, going 5-for-39 (.128) with no homers, no RBI, two walks and 16 strikeouts in his last nine games since April 24. The Rockies have a scheduled off day on Monday, so Tovar will next play on Tuesday against the visiting San Francisco Giants. Alan Trejo is at the 6 on Sunday and is hitting ninth against Pirates left-hander Bailey Falter.

Sun Mar 2417:09Ezequiel Tovar Signs Massive Extension
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar has reportedly signed a long-term extension with the organization on Sunday. It's a seven-year deal with a club option for the 2031 season. Tovar could earn up to $84 million if the team does exercise his option. The young infielder was fairly productive through his first big league season. Tovar slashed .253/.287/.408 with 15 homers, 73 RBI, and 11 stolen bases. The organization is hopeful that Tovar will take a step forward offensively in 2024. It appears that the Rockies believe Tovar is the future at shortstop and he very well could be if he keeps progressing.

Tue Mar 516:19Ezequiel Tovar Enjoying Massive Spring
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is enjoying a big spring training at the plate as he looks forward to his sophomore season. The 22-year-old has gone 7-for-13 with two home runs, one double, five runs, seven RBI, and a 1.610 OPS on the spring across 15 trips to the plate. The youngster put forth a solid rookie season from a counting-stats perspective as he hit 15 home runs with 79 runs, 73 RBI, and 11 stolen bases across 153 games a season ago. However, he walked in just 5.7% of his plate appearances and his 70 wRC+ fell 30% below the league average. He remains a nice fantasy option in the 2024 season as he is projected to hit 16 home runs with 13 stolen bases and 76 runs scored by ATC. Of course, playing half of your games at the hitter-friendly Coors Field is an added bonus to his fantasy value.

Sat Aug 19 202301:09Ezequiel Tovar Stays Hot In Friday’s Win
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, three runs scored and a walk in Friday's lopsided 14-1 triumph over the Chicago White Sox. The 22-year-old popped a first-inning two-run homer to get Colorado in the scoring column before driving in another run on a fielder's choice with the game well in hand during the seventh frame. Tovar is starting to put together the talent that made him the No. 1 Rockies prospect entering 2022. Over his last 11 games, Tovar is hitting .364 (16-for-44) with four big flies, three doubles, seven RBI, and two stolen bases since Aug. 7. The speedy infielder's fantasy arrow is beginning to shoot up especially while batting first or second quite a bit of late.

Fri Jul 7 202317:28Ezequiel Tovar Hitting Leadoff Against Giants

The 21-year-old is seeing regular time at the 6 as Colorado's regular shortstop and is currently hitting .266/.303/.430 with eight home runs, 20 doubles, two triples, 41 RBI, four stolen bases and 41 runs scored in 310 plate appearances over 81 games. Tovar made his major-league debut in 2022, but he played in only nine games.

Thu Jun 22 202312:41Ezequiel Tovar Back From Paternity List
The Colorado Rockies announced on Thursday that they have reinstated shortstop Ezequiel Tovar from the paternity list and optioned infielder Connor Kaiser to Triple-A Albuquerque in a corresponding move. Tovar should be back in the team's starting lineup on Friday for the series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. Colorado has an off day on Thursday. In his first full major-league season, the 21-year-old middle infielder is hitting .256 (64-for-250) with six home runs, 19 doubles, a triple, 30 RBI, three stolen bases and 32 runs scored in 70 games (264 plate appearances). He's picked things up in June, going 20-for-67 (.299) with three homers, four doubles, eight RBI and a stolen base in 17 games. Fantasy managers will want to get him back in their lineups this weekend.

Fri Jun 2 202300:57Ezequiel Tovar Blasts Fourth Home Run Thursday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the Rockies' 5-4 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday. After hitting .213 with no home runs in April, Tovar hit .266 with three home runs in May before starting the month of June off with a home run. Tovar has just two stolen bases in 54 games this season, but he stole 17 bases in 71 minor-league games last year. If he can bring that part of his game to the major-league level, it's easy to see how Tovar can be a solid fantasy option at shortstop.

Sat May 6 202319:06Ezequiel Tovar Hits Second Home Run In Win Saturday
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar went 3-for-4 with a two-run blast in the sixth inning of Colorado's triumph over the Mets. It was the 21-year-old's second homer this week after going deep on May 2 against the Brewers. Perhaps Colorado's number-one prospect is beginning the percolate, as he raised his batting average to .236 with this effort and has logged at least one hit in 10 of his last 12 contests. Regarded for his speed, Tovar has yet to swipe a bag in 31 games for the Rockies, so fantasy managers rostering him are still waiting for that element of his game to be unlocked. Still, he should be at the top of fantasy watch lists for his tantalizing upside.

Tue Feb 21 202300:47Ezequiel Tovar Ready To Start At Shortstop
Despite being just 21 years old, Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar appears ready to earn a starting role with the team. Manager Bud Black said Monday, "his overall wherewithal mentally is going to enable him at a young age to potentially be our shortstop." Tovar only had 35 plate appearances with the Rockies at the end of the 2022 season, but he hit well during the season at Double-A Hartford, batting .318 with 13 home runs, 47 RBI, and 17 stolen bases in 66 games before suffering left hip/pelvis inflammation. Tovar's average and speed skills, plus the potential for his power to play up in Coors Field makes him an intriguing fantasy option in both dynasty and redraft leagues this season. His current draft position of 251 makes him a worthwhile mid-to-late-round pick.

Tue Dec 6 202215:50Ezequiel Tovar "Tracking" Towards Being Opening Day Shortstop
Following a breakout season in which Colorado Rockies infielder Ezequiel Tovar stormed through the upper levels of the minors and made his major-league debut, manager Bud Black said the 21-year-old is "tracking" towards being the team's Opening Day shortstop in 2023. "He showed enough to us in what he did during the course of the year," Black said. "All our evaluators and player development people think that he is a guy that we can count on moving forward." The Rockies' No. 1 prospect hit .318 in 66 games at Double-A Hartford before a groin injury sidelined him for more than two months. Tovar had a hit in six of his first nine big-league games last year, and his fantasy stock is obviously on the rise as a potential every-day player right out of the gates in 2023.

Fri Sep 23 202216:18Ezequiel Tovar Making MLB Debut Against Padres
Colorado Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar is making his major-league debut on Friday against the San Diego Padres and left-hander Sean Manaea, starting at shortstop and hitting eighth in the batting order. Tovar, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque this week after playing just five games for them. The 21-year-old has been heralded as the Rockies' shortstop of the future, so it's likely that he'll see regular playing time in the final weeks of the regular season. In 66 games for Double-A Hartford this year, Tovar hit .318/.386/.546 with a .932 OPS, 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 39 runs scored and 17 stolen bases. As of right now, he's a defense-first prospect, but the young right-handed hitter has shown an improved ability to drive the ball this year despite an aggressive approach at the plate.
