Alfonzo signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers over the winter, but he was unable to report to major league camp this spring because he had dengue fever. However, he's now back 100 percent and was recently playing in the Mexican League. The 34-year-old backstop will serve as organizational depth with Los Angeles. |

Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease which is spread by mosquitoes. He is currently in Venezuela and is not permitted to fly for 5-7 days. Once he's back to full health, he will report to minor league camp. Per Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times, Matt Wallach will replace him in big league camp. |

Alfonzo was previously suspended in April of 2008 as a member of the Giants. He joins Manny Ramirez as the only players to test positive twice for PEDs. "I am surprised by this positive test. I learned my lesson in 2008 and have not taken any prohibited substances since then," Alfonzo said in a statement. "With the union's help I intend to fight this suspension." Alfonzo, who is currently on the Rockies' active roster, is batting .267/.304/.320 with one home run and nine RBI over 79 plate appearances this season. |
