CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians designated Carlos Gonzalez for assignment after the veteran outfielder failed to produce for a team that has struggled offensively all season.Gonzalez, who signed a minor-league contract in spring training, batted .210 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 30 games. The left-handed hitter, 33, played the last 11 seasons for the Colorado Rockies.Manager Terry Francona said it was difficult to part ways with Gonzalez, but the Indians want to give more playing time to Jordan Luplow and Oscar Mercado, both right-handed hitters.Francona said catcher Roberto Perez, who left Tuesday's game after being struck on the mask with a foul tip, will not go on the concussion list. Perez underwent a series of tests and will be out for a couple of days.Catcher Eric Haase was recalled from Triple-A Columbus. The moves were made prior to Wednesday's game against Oakland.___More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels received equal bits of good and bad news Tuesday.Shohei Ottani was fine, a day after he was hit on the right ring finger while swinging on a third strike. But they are going to be without Andrelton Simmons for awhile. The shortstop was placed on the 10-day injured list after he hurt his left ankle during Monday's loss to the Minnesota Twins. Simmons sustained a grade 3 ankle sprain when he tried to beat out an infield hit during the eighth inning. Simmons and Ohanti were injured on consecutive at-bats and during a three-pitch span."I was just trying to get there and I guess miscalculated a little bit," Simmons said. "I haven't even the replay yet, heard a little bit about it. That's the first time I actually lunged at first and didn't work out well for me.The injury is a blow to the Angels' offense. Simmons, the team's cleanup hitter, was leading the majors in hits (44) since April 15 and was batting .341 in that span. He had been the AL's Gold... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Mets third baseman Todd Frazier and Nationals outfielder Adam Eaton were back at it with more barbs Tuesday.During New York's 5-3 win on Monday the two jawed at each other from a distance, prompting several Nationals to take a few steps out of the dugout before Frazier and Eaton were guided in opposite directions. The two were teammates with the Chicago White Sox in 2016 but have an acrimonious history. Eaton said after Monday's game: "I tried to stay patient with the childishness.""That's Adam," Frazier said. "That's him. At the end of the day, you think about what a man really is. You settle stuff out on the field. You don't talk about it. That's basically what I do. Back in the day, that's how you usually settle it.""For him to even talk after that, I don't know how you talk after that and that's basically all I'll say after that," Frazier went on. "Men usually settle on the field, but he talked about it. He started it coming at me with 'I'm a man. I got a mortgage to... [More]

A look at what's happening around the majors Tuesday:LOOKING FOR SIXYankees right-hander Domingo Germán (8-1, 2.50 ERA) seeks to win his sixth consecutive start on Tuesday night against the last-place Orioles. The major league leader in victories, Germán has a chance to join Tommy John (1979), Herb Pennock (1926) and Jack Chesbro (1904) as the only Yankees to notch nine wins by the end of May.It's pretty heady stuff for a 26-year-old who entered the season with a 2-7 career record.Baltimore will counter with rookie Davis Hess (1-5, 5.58), who has gone seven straight starts without a victory, including two losses to New York during that span.STREAKINGHouston ace Justin Verlander (7-1, 2.38 ERA) will look for his fourth straight win and the seventh in eight starts when he faces the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday in the second game of a four-game series. Take away George Springer and Jose Altuve, and maybe the Houston Astros start to look a little more beatable.Maybe.The Boston Red Sox finally snapped Houston's 10-game winning streak Sunday with a 4-3 victory after Springer left the game with lower back stiffness. The Astros were already playing without Altuve, on the injured list with a strained left hamstring, but that injury did little to slow Houston. Even after Sunday's loss, the Astros have the best record and best run differential in the major leagues. They lead the AL West by 8 ½ games.Altuve hasn't played since May 10, so Houston's recent torrid stretch took place largely without him. That's a scary thought for the rest of the American League. In their first four games without their star second baseman, the Astros scored 45 runs against the Rangers and Tigers."Our guys are seeing the ball really well and making it tough on them," Houston manager AJ Hinch said while the Astros were in Detroit. "Driving the pitch counts through the... [More]

PHOENIX (AP) — San Francisco Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto threw a bullpen session Saturday, and the team was encouraged enough for manager Bruce Bochy to say the club hopes Cueto can return toward the end of this season.Cueto, who had major elbow surgery last August, was 18-5 in 2016 and selected to the All-Star game, but has since gone 11-10 in the last two years combined."I think he surprised a lot of us with where he's at," Bochy said before Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. "It's all fastballs, but he's gotten himself in great shape, too. I think it's the best shape I've seen Johnny in, to be honest."From what you saw today, you've got to believe he's going to be pitching before the season's over. I'm not going to be surprised if he pitches in September."Cueto threw off flat ground Saturday, and the hope is that next week he will throw breaking balls and changeups. If Cueto comes back in September, it will be as a starting pitcher, Bochy said. NEW YORK (AP) — Didi Gregorius is projected to return to the New York Yankees next month, a faster recovery from Tommy John surgery than expected.Gregorius is scheduled to play shortstop on Monday at extended spring training in Tampa, Florida, his first game action since surgery on Oct. 17 to replace a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow."It's a good step. "You've got to trust the whole thing, even though I'm impatient because I want to work. But it is what it is. Got to go with what they're saying and go with their schedule."Manager Aaron Boone does not expect Gregorius will need the equivalent of a full spring training, which is about six weeks."I think it will be shorter," Boone said Saturday.
