Fri Aug 25 202301:53Paul Sewald Collects 28th Save Thursday
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald shut the door on the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, closing out a 3-2 win. Sewald threw a scoreless ninth inning, allowing just a walk while striking out a pair. After a shaky start to his time in the desert, Sewald has settled down nicely. The 33-year-old now has eight straight scoreless appearances, including seven saves during that span. He should continue to be the go-to option for the Snakes and could see a load of opportunities as they fight for a postseason berth. He is a top-ten fantasy closer.

Wed Aug 16 202300:29Paul Sewald Earns 24th Save Of Season Tuesday
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald picked up his 24th save of the season in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Rockies. Sewald came in to pitch the bottom of the ninth inning up by three. He allowed a leadoff single, got the first out on a strikeout, allowed back-to-back singles, got the second out on a pop-out, and got the final out on a flyout. The 33-year-old joined the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline after a solid season with the Mariners and has now converted saves in each of his last three appearances. His 3.26 ERA and 12.64 K/9 rate have made him a higher-end fantasy option this season.

Mon Aug 14 202301:57Paul Sewald Records Back-To-Back Saves
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald picked up his 23rd save of the season Sunday in a 5-4 win over the San Diego Padres. Sewald tossed a scoreless ninth, allowing just a walk while striking out one. After a blown save in his first opportunity with Arizona, Sewald has bounced back with a couple of scoreless converted saves in the last two days. The 33-year-old veteran should see plenty more opportunities down the stretch as Arizona pushes for a playoff spot. He is a high-quality bullpen option that can be started in almost all formats.

Sun Aug 6 202319:56Paul Sewald Blows Sunday's Game
Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald was brought in with a one-run lead versus the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The right-hander didn't retire a batter as he allowed three runs to score in what ended up being a loss for Arizona. He allowed Max Kepler to tie the game to open the frame. After that, Sewald gave up a walkoff two-run blast to Matt Wallner. It was a tough outing for Sewald, but he should rebound from this. The D-Backs acquired Sewald at the trade deadline to be their closer down the stretch. That being said, Sewald should remain in the ninth inning role going forward.

Mon Jul 31 202317:31Diamondbacks Acquiring Paul Sewald From Mariners
The Arizona Diamondbacks are finalizing a deal on Monday to acquire closer Paul Sewald from the Seattle Mariners, according to sources. The Diamondbacks are sending infielder Josh Rojas, outfielder/first baseman Dominic Canzone and infielder Ryan Bliss to the Mariners in return. Sewald will head to the National League West and should become Arizona's primary closing option after posting a strong 2.93 ERA (2.98 FIP), 1.02 WHIP, a career-high 21 saves, 14 walks and 60 strikeouts in 43 relief innings for the M's this year. With Sewald no longer in Seattle, Andres Munoz figures to be the primary beneficiary for save chances, although Justin Topa could also factor into the equation in the ninth for the rest of the season.

Wed Jul 26 202300:31Paul Sewald Allows Run, Earns Save Tuesday
Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald managed to earn his 20th save of the season in Tuesday's 9-7 win over the Twins. Sewald entered the game to pitch the ninth inning up by three. He allowed a leadoff home run before getting the next three hitters out on a groundout, lineout, and flyout. The 33-year-old has been excellent overall this season, converting all but three save opportunities with a 3.00 ERA and a 12.64 K/9 rate. He should remain a strong fantasy option in the second half as the Mariners fight for a Wild Card spot.

Tue Jul 18 202308:07Paul Sewald Secures Monday's Save
Seattle Mariners reliever Paul Sewald completed his 19th save of the season on Monday when his club defeated the Minnesota Twins 7-6. He only needed to get one out in the top of the ninth inning, striking out the only batter he faced. Sewald now owns a 3.11 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and 37.4% strikeout rate across 37 2/3 innings. Despite the handful of late-inning arms in Seattle's pen, the 33-year-old has the closing role locked down, and fantasy managers should start him in all formats.

Sun Jul 2 202323:26Paul Sewald Grabs 17th Save Sunday
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald earned another save on Sunday, shutting down the Tampa Bay Rays to secure a 7-6 win. Sewald tossed a perfect ninth, striking out two in the process. That makes back-to-back saves against the MLB's best team, with a total of 2 scoreless innings thrown over that span. The 33-year-old has been solid this year for the M's, pitching to a 2.62 ERA and 0.93 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in 34 IP. Even with a few blown saves recently, he appears to be locked into the closer role for the time being. He is one of the better fantasy options out of the bullpen.

Tue Jun 27 202309:05Paul Sewald Closes Out Monday's Win
Seattle Mariners right-hander Paul Sewald recorded the save on Monday after closing out the 8-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. He came into the game with two outs in the ninth inning and made quick work of the Nats, striking out the only batter he faced. It was Sewald's 14th save of 2023, and he also owns a 2.64 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, and 35.3% strikeout rate. Fantasy managers should view the 33-year-old as the lone closer in Seattle who will continue providing great value in every category.

Wed Jun 7 202302:18Paul Sewald Picks Up 12th Save Of The Season
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald earned the save on Tuesday when he allowed a single and a walk to go along with a strikeout over a scoreless ninth inning in a 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres. Per usual, whenever he has a decent lead, Sewald pounded the strike zone when he came out for the ninth inning. It got a little dicey off the bat, though, as he allowed a single to Juan Soto and then walked Gary Sanchez after striking out Manny Machado. The drama subsided soon afterward as he punched out Jake Cronenworth and then induced a Brandon Dixon ground ball to end the game. It's worth noting that Andres Munoz returned to the Seattle bullpen tonight and worked a scoreless eighth inning before handing it over to Sewald. Munoz may snipe the occasional save from Sewald but his presence should help the veteran closer overall. For the season, the 33-year-old reliever owns a solid 2.84 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and 35:8 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings to go along with 12 saves.

Fri May 26 202302:43Paul Sewald Cruises To 11th Save
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald secured his 11th save of the season Thursday in a 3-2 win over the Oakland Athletics. Sewald looked great again in this one, notching two strikeouts and not allowing a baserunner in his inning of work. The righty has a 3.18 ERA and 0.88 WHIP with 30 strikeouts over 22 IP and has converted all 11 of his save opportunities. With Andres Munoz set to return soon, it will be interesting to see what the Mariners do with their high-leverage arms. Sewald has certainly pitched well enough to see the majority of save chances, but Munoz might vulture some of his saves.

Wed May 24 202309:16Paul Sewald Remains Perfect In Save Opportunities Tuesday
Seattle Mariners reliever Paul Sewald picked up his 10th save of the season on Tuesday, tossing a clean ninth inning to help his team defeat the Oakland Athletics 3-2. He allowed no baserunners while striking out a pair and has still yet to blow a save. Sewald's running a 3.32 ERA and 0.92 WHIP with 28 punchouts over 21.2 innings, dominant numbers from the pen. When Andres Munoz (shoulder) returns from the injured list, the former may have some competition for the closer role. However, given his string of success, Sewald should remain the number one option in Seattle.

Fri May 5 202301:13Paul Sewald Remains Perfect, Grabs Ninth Save
Seattle Mariners right-handed pitcher Paul Sewald notched his ninth save of the season on Thursday after shutting down the Oakland Athletics to preserve a 5-3 win. Sewald threw a perfect frame, fanning two in the process. He now has a 2.65 ERA and 0.76 WHIP and has converted all nine of his save opportunities. The 32-year-old has looked fantastic in Andres Munoz' absence and should continue to get save chances once Munoz returns, although they may return to a committee approach. For now, though, Sewald is an elite closing option.

Mon May 1 202312:50Paul Sewald Picks Up Another Win
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald picked up his second win of the season in the team's 10-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in 10 innings on Sunday. Sewald came on in the bottom of the ninth inning with the game tied and allowed one hit, no runs and a walk in his inning of work to send the game into extra innings. Matt Brash entered in the bottom of the 10th inning in Toronto to secure his first save of the season. After Sunday's outing, Sewald has a 3.00 ERA (3.39 FIP), 0.87 WHIP, seven saves, four walks and 19 strikeouts in 15 innings over 15 relief appearances. The 32-year-old right-handed veteran has picked up where he left off in 2022 and holds plenty of fantasy value as Seattle's primary closer right now.

Wed Apr 26 202301:01Paul Sewald Racks Up Seventh Save Tuesday
It wasn't the cleanest, but Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald picked up his seventh save of the season in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Phillies. Sewald came in to close things out up by three. He allowed a leadoff double, got the first out on a groundout while the runner advanced to third, got the second out on a strikeout, allowed a run to score on a single, and ended the game with another strikeout. The 32-year-old has been solid to start the season, compiling a 3.46 ERA with an 11.77 K/9 rate. Only three other closers currently have more saves than Sewald; he should continue to be in fantasy managers' lineups as long as he continues to pitch as he has.

Sat Apr 15 202311:35Paul Sewald Earns Friday's Save
Seattle Mariners right-hander Paul Sewald threw a perfect ninth inning Friday to earn the save of the 5-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies. He struck out two, and the save was his third of the season. Sewald's posted a 3.38 ERA, 25.0% strikeout rate, and 1.00 WHIP over eight innings so far in 2023. It's after the 32-year-old pitched to a 2.67 ERA and 29.8% strikeout rate with a 0.77 WHIP last season. Sewald looks like the closer in Seattle right now, but it could change into a committee when Andres Munoz, who has one save to his name, returns from the injured list. Either way, he should provide fantasy owners with close to 20 saves this year.

Fri Mar 31 202316:39Paul Sewald Picks Up Win On Opening Day
Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Paul Sewald picked up his first win of the season on Opening Day on Thursday night in the 3-0 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Sewald worked a perfect eighth inning and struck out one, while Andres Munoz got the save after giving up two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. The 32-year-old picked up the hold, but fantasy managers that drafted him for saves should be disappointed. He had a career-high 20 saves last year and should be in the mix for saves again in 2023, but Munoz could be a thorn in his side all year in the ninth inning. It's something to keep an eye on in the early portions of this season.

Wed Feb 1 202318:42Paul Sewald Should Be Ready For Spring Training
Seattle Mariners closer Paul Sewald (elbow, heel) has resumed throwing and should be ready to pitch in spring training games. Sewald had surgeries on his right elbow and his heel in the offseason. The 32-year-old could be eased into spring training action, but relievers typically don't need a ton of work before the regular season. He had a team-high 20 saves last season and will enter Opening Day as Seattle's primary closer yet again, giving him plenty of value in fantasy leagues on an improved Mariners team. Sewald could have a short leash if he falters, though, and Andres Munoz and Diego Castillo are plenty capable of handling ninth-inning duties as well. Sewald had a career-best 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), 0.77 WHIP, 20 saves and 72 strikeouts in 64 relief innings last year.

Wed Jan 25 202320:07Paul Sewald, Andres Munoz May Get Late Start This Spring
Seattle Mariners relief pitchers Paul Sewald (elbow, heel) and Andres Munoz (foot), who both had surgeries this offseason, might not see much action early in spring training. However, relievers don't usually need much work in the spring to get ready, and they should both be fine for Opening Day. Both pitchers are a big part of the back end of Seattle's bullpen heading into 2023, with Sewald currently slated to enter the year as the primary closer. Sewald was great in his second year with the M's, posting a career-best 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), career-high 20 saves, 0.77 WHIP and 72 strikeouts in 64 relief innings. Munoz was just as good with a 2.49 ERA (2.04 FIP), four saves, 0.89 WHIP and 96 K's in 65 innings out of the bullpen.

Fri Jan 13 202315:22Paul Sewald Avoids Arbitration Friday
The Seattle Mariners and relief pitcher Paul Sewald avoided salary arbitration on Friday be agreeing to a one-year, $4.1 million deal. Sewald had the best year of his career in his second season in Seattle in 2022, posting a career-low 2.67 ERA (3.88 FIP), career-low 0.77 WHIP, career-high 20 saves and 29.8 percent strikeout rate in 64 innings over 65 relief appearances. He did have surgery on both his elbow and heel in December, but he is expected to be ready for the start of spring training. The 32-year-old veteran should open the 2023 campaign as the favorite in Seattle for saves, but if he falters at all, the M's have some other pretty good ninth-inning options in Andres Munoz and Diego Castillo.
