RHP Colin Rea was the odd-man-out when the Padres needed a fresh arm in their bullpen Monday night after Sunday's 17-inning marathon against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rea was demoted to Triple-A El Paso so that the Padres could add LHP Keith Hessler to the bullpen. The Padres had the luxury of demoting a starting pitcher because of an off day Thursday. Rea had been winless in his previous three starts (0-1), allowing 10 runs in 15 innings.

However, he walked the leadoff hitter in the top of the sixth and was charged with three runs without retiring a hitter in the inning. "I didn't get the job done in the sixth," Rea said. "He outpitched me tonight," Rea said of Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff, who pitched seven shutout innings. "Unfortunately I made a few mistakes, and they took advantage of them." Maikel Franco hit Rea's 2-2 offering, a high changeup, into the left field seats with the bases empty and two outs in the first. In the third Rea left a fastball up in the strike zone, and Franco lined it into the gap in left-center field to drive in Odubel Herrera, who legged out an infield single and continued to second on an errant throw by Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg. "I've got to make better pitches, especially in the first inning to Franco," Rea said, "and then in the third inning, too, to Franco as well."

"We had that backup plan there and would have rather not cashed it in, but he was ready for us,'' Green said. But Green added he didn't expect it to happen again. Green said it won't be a practice of his to make starters available out of the bullpen.

RHP Colin Rea served in a mop-up role Monday in the Padres' 15-0 loss to the Dodgers, which was a bit puzzling. Rea won a spot in the rotation during a spirited battle in camp and was supposed to pitch Friday's road opener in Colorado. Manager Andy Green said that is still the case and that Rea just worked his regular bullpen session in a game situation. The Padres had Rea hold off throwing before the game, just in case they needed him to absorb some innings.
