RHP Colin Rea was the odd-man-out when the Padres needed a fresh arm in their bullpen Monday night after Sunday's 17-inning marathon against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rea was demoted to Triple-A El Paso so that the Padres could add LHP Keith Hessler to the bullpen. The Padres had the luxury of demoting a starting pitcher because of an off day Thursday. Rea had been winless in his previous three starts (0-1), allowing 10 runs in 15 innings.

RHP Colin Rea started Sunday's game and was staked to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth. However, he walked the leadoff hitter in the top of the sixth and was charged with three runs without retiring a hitter in the inning. "I didn't get the job done in the sixth," Rea said. "With a four-run lead, you have to be on the attack. That leadoff walk in the sixth is where it all started."

RHP Colin Rea got a no-decision in Game 1 of Wednesday's split doubleheader with the Cubs. He gave up four runs on seven hits while walking a season-high-tying four and striking out three in five innings. He has a 7.54 ERA with 11 walks in four day games this year.

RHP Colin Rea (3-1, 3.82 ERA) makes his seventh start of the season in Wednesday's opener of a split doubleheader at Wrigley Field. It's his fourth on the road and first ever against the Cubs. He collected his third win of the year last week against the Mets, going a career-high eight innings while allowing just one run and holding the Mets hitless until two outs in the seventh inning.

RHP Colin Rea was tagged with a 2-1 loss Wednesday in Philadelphia, but went seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking two. It equaled the longest outing of his career, and also equaled the longest outing by a Padres starter this season. "He outpitched me tonight," Rea said of Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoff, who pitched seven shutout innings. "Unfortunately I made a few mistakes, and they took advantage of them." Maikel Franco hit Rea's 2-2 offering, a high changeup, into the left field seats with the bases empty and two outs in the first. In the third Rea left a fastball up in the strike zone, and Franco lined it into the gap in left-center field to drive in Odubel Herrera, who legged out an infield single and continued to second on an errant throw by Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg. "I've got to make better pitches, especially in the first inning to Franco," Rea said, "and then in the third inning, too, to Franco as well."

RHP Colin Rea, Wednesday's starter, has a 12.46 ERA while appearing twice this season, but does not have a decision. He worked an inning in relief on Opening Day against the Dodgers, and went 3 1/3 innings in a start last Friday against Colorado, allowing five runs on six hits while walking four in a 13-6 San Diego victory. He made his major league debut with the Padres last season, going 2-2 with a 4.26 ERA in six starts.

RHP Colin Rea makes his first start on Friday against the Colorado Rockies. But it won't be his first appearance on the season. In a strange twist, Rea worked an inning of relief in Monday's 15-0 shellacking by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rea was scheduled to throw a bullpen session that evening, but manager Andy Green had him hold off, just in case he was needed to absorb some innings in a blow out. That's just what happened. "We had that backup plan there and would have rather not cashed it in, but he was ready for us,'' Green said. But Green added he didn't expect it to happen again. Green said it won't be a practice of his to make starters available out of the bullpen.

RHP Colin Rea served in a mop-up role Monday in the Padres' 15-0 loss to the Dodgers, which was a bit puzzling. Rea won a spot in the rotation during a spirited battle in camp and was supposed to pitch Friday's road opener in Colorado. Manager Andy Green said that is still the case and that Rea just worked his regular bullpen session in a game situation. The Padres had Rea hold off throwing before the game, just in case they needed him to absorb some innings.
