RHP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start at Triple-A Reno on Tuesday, and he probably needs to make a good impression to ensure an immediate return the parent D-backs. Collmenter, who has been on the disabled list since the start of the season, is 0-1 with a 10.57 in three rehab starts at Class A Visalia, giving up nine runs in 7 2/3 innings. "He has to show something," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. Collmenter was expected to be the long reliever this season, a role he has excelled in.

RHP Josh Collmenter will make his next rehab appearance at Triple-A Reno, Arizona manager Chip Hale said, after making three starts at Class A Visalia. Collmenter (shoulder) is 0-1 with a 10.57 ERA in 7 2-3 innings but has showed no signs of soreness and hit his normal velocity 87 mph in his outing Thursday. He was expected to serve as the Diamondbacks' long relief specialist this season but he opened the season on the disabled list.

Collmenter, who opened the season on the disabled list, has a couple more rehab games scheduled, manager Chip Hale said. "We want to get him to five or six innings," Hale said. "Everything has been smooth, but we just want to get him built up." Collmenter has allowed 13 hits and nine earned runs in 7 2/3 innings in three rehab appearances with Visalia.

He walked one and struck out none. Collmenter allowed two hits and no runs in his first rehab outing Monday, striking out three and walking one in three innings. RHP Josh Collmenter, as scheduled, is to pitch three innings in a rehab assignment at Class A Visalia on Monday. The D-backs will evaluate after that, but Collmenter is likely to make one more rehab appearance. "Probably have him go again, get some more length," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. Collmenter has been on the disabled list since the start of the regular season with shoulder inflammation.

RHP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) is scheduled to pitch twice in extended spring training this week before pitching three innings at Class A Visalia on May 2, according to manager Chip Hale. It is reasonable to expect Collmenter to be activated on the 10-day road trip May 3-11, Hale said. "We'll see how he feels," Hale said. "We'll see how the ball is coming out of his hand. And we'll see if he is getting outs. Those are all going to be important things." Collmenter did not require surgery, and his rehab has included exercises to strengthen and loosen his core. "Just stuff that happens over the course of many years of pitching a lot of innings," Hale said. "Maybe it is the best thing that could happen to him."

RHP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) is expected to begin pitching in extended spring training games this week, manager Chip Hale said, and should work his way to three-inning stints on a rehab assignment by first week of May. Collmenter has been on the disabled list with a slight shoulder impingement since the season began. He was expected to be the primary long reliever, a role that has been filled by RHP Kyle Drabek, RHP Matt Buschmann and RHP Tyler Wagner in the interim

RHP Josh Collmenter (shoulder) is expected to start throwing on the side early next week as the Diamondbacks begin a 10-game road Tuesday. Collmenter missed time last week with an illness. "His shoulder is feeling much better," Arizona manager Chip Hale said. Collmenter also may get some work in the extended spring training program during the Diamondbacks' road trip, Hale said.

RHP Josh Collmenter opened the season on the disabled list with what could be a minor infringement of his right shoulder. "It doesn't quite give you normal usage," Collmenter said. Tests showed no structural damage. "It just didn't feel right," he said. "Thought we were making progress on it but it really weren't getting where we wanted it to. Take some time to iron it out and be back as soon as possible." RHP Kyle Drabek was purchased Tuesday to replace Collmenter as the long reliever. "The length factor is an issue," manager Chip Hale said. "We are starting to see how Collmenter is important to our team."

RHP Josh Collmenter's $1,825,000 option for 2016 was picked up by Diamondbacks on Nov. 3. The price is more than reasonable for a starter but maybe not for a long reliever, his role at the end of the season. Collmenter, Arizona's Opening Day starter this year, finished the season 4-6 with a 3.79 ERA in 44 games (12 starts). He showed improvement after being demoted to a relief role.

Collmenter tossed two scoreless innings of relief and picked up his first save of the season in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Rockies.
With closer Brad Ziegler unavailable after giving up seven runs over a total of 2.1 innings the previous two days, manager Chip Hale turned to two different pitchers in save situations Tuesday. After Dan Hudson closed things out in Game 1, Collmenter, who typically works as Arizona's long man, limited the Rockies to a base hit and a double over his two frames to claim the save. The hiccups in his recent appearances aside, Ziegler has been excellent in the closing role this season, so don't expect Collmenter to put much pressure on him for those duties.

Collmenter relieved started Patrick Corbin in the third inning Thursday and threw three clean innings with three strikeouts against the Reds.
Collmenter held the Reds in check after they took an early 4-0 lead while the D-backs' offense started its come back in a game Arizona would ultimately win. Collmenter has been much better since the All-Star break, posting a 1.61 ERA and 0.90 WHIP over 22.1 innings with a 14:5 K:BB ratio. At this stage, he is likely to finish the year in the bullpen, but could have the chance to compete for a spot at the back of the rotation in 2016.

Collmenter picked up the win Sunday over the Reds when he threw a clean top of the tenth inning before the D-backs walked off in the bottom of the inning. He struck out one in the appearance.
Collmenter has a 2.38 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over his last 11.1 innings, as he continues to pitch better than he did earlier in the year. As a middle reliever he doesn't hold much value due to his low strikeout totals (he has just 45 strikeouts in 93 innings) and it doesn't look like he is headed back to the rotation soon.
