RHP A.J. Schugel was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday to fill the roster spot opened up when RHP Ryan Vogelsong was hit in the face by a pitch.

RHP A.J. Schugel was sent to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. The 26-year-old appeared in 11 games for Pittsburgh, and he was 0-1 with one save and a 4.96 ERA.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle was working in the Rockies organization as a minor league hitting coordinator when the elder Schugel was scouting for the Rockies. Hurdle said, "I was just really happy for him. I've known him since he was 12, 10, running in and out of the clubhouse over there. Know the dad, the mom, the family. It's a real cool night to watch a kid go out there and pitch, kind of like playing Wiffle ball in the backyard. It's fun. I'm sure the family is very excited."

RHP AJ Schugel had his contract selected from Triple-A Indianapolis and pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings Wednesday night in a 7-3 loss to Detroit. Schugel was called up because the Pirates wanted to add an extra pitcher after LHP Francisco Liriano was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday night against Detroit because of a strained right hamstring. Schugel had a less than impressive major league debut in April, allowing a couple runs in three innings of mop-up duty, but recovered when he returned to Double-A ball. He registered a 2.21 ERA in 12 starts and was then promoted to Triple-A, where's he been dismantled over the course of nine starts, averaging 4.2 innings per start and allowing a 10.18 ERA and 2.158 WHIP. He figures to again assume long-relief duty.

Schugel was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Schugel struggled in his major league debut, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks over three innings. Following the outing, he will head back to the minors in a corresponding move that brings Yasmany Tomas back to the major league club.

Schugel was called up from Triple-A Reno as the Diamondbacks bullpen had been worked hard over the week and he was pressed into service immediately. The 26-year-old will likely be headed back to the minors soon, where has primarily been a starter in the past.

The Diamondbacks' string of short starts forced their need for bullpen help, so they called up Schugel, who will likely function in a long-relief role until they need to activate another player. Schugel was solid in Double-A last season with a 3.48 ERA, but he in't considered a major prospect.

Schugel was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Monday.

Schugel entered spring training hoping to nab a bullpen spot with the Diamondback, but it appears that is out of reach at this point. He will return to Triple-A for now, and likely remains a few injuries away from returning to the big league roster.

Schugel will make his 2015 spring debut in Tuesday's game against Arizona State, the Arizona Republic reports.

It appears as though his days as a starter are over, as the Diamondbacks have 14 options vying for three open rotation spots this spring. Even with the role change, Schugel may be ticketed for Triple-A Reno to begin 2015.

Schugel was added to the 40-man roster by the Diamomdbacks on Thursday, the Arizona Republic reports.

There's still some debate regarding Schugel's future as a starter, but he tossed 147.2 innings and made 26 starts at Double-A last season. With the influx of arms being added to the organization recently, it will be interesting to see if the D-backs decide to change his role in 2015. More likely, he'll attempt to start at Triple-A Reno, where his mid-90s fastball and changeup will be tested in a very hitter-friendly environment.
