The Pirates revealed Sunday that Rule 5 pick Josh Rodriguez would be carried as a utilityman. |
It sounded like they were leaning towards going with Pedro Ciriaco, who is a superior defender, but Rodriguez won out, partly because of his bat but mostly because he'd have to be returned to the Indians if he didn't make the team. Rodriguez shouldn't have any fantasy value. |

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes that Rule 5 pick Josh Rodriguez is unlikely to make the Pirates. |
The Pirates selected Rodriguez with the No. 1 pick in December's Rule 5 Draft, but Kovacevic writes that Pedro Ciriaco "looks much stronger" for the backup middle infielder job. Josh Rodriguez went 2-for-3 on Friday in the Pirates' 2-1 defeat of the Phillies. |
Rodriguez, the first overall pick in the Rule 5 draft, is 7-for-20 with five walks as he battles to make the Pirates as a utilityman. He's had some right quad tightness this spring, so the Pirates could try to stash him on the DL initially if they'd rather not give him a roster spot. |
