Tue Sep 1000:44Austin Wells Hits Three-Run Homer Monday
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells continued his strong offensive second half in Monday's 10-4 win over the Royals. Wells went 2-for-5 with a double, a three-run home run, four RBI, and a strikeout. The 25-year-old backstop broke a seventh-inning tie by driving a James McArthur fastball deep into the right-field seats for his 13th long ball of the season. While he has cooled off in September, Wells has put together a .295/.380/.511 second-half slash line with seven HR and 29 RBI in 135 at-bats. His current performance and exposure to an excellent Yankees lineup make him a potential fantasy option in most fantasy leagues down the stretch.

Fri Sep 612:14Austin Wells Back In Yankees Lineup
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells (hand) is back behind the plate and is batting cleanup for Friday's series opener at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs and left-hander Jordan Wicks. Wells was hit on the right hand by a pitch on Monday and avoided any structural damage, but he was forced to sit out the next two games as a result. The 25-year-old backstop is feeling better after Thursday's off day, though, and will return to the heart of the Bombers' order in a friendly matchup at the friendly confines. Wells will be looking to get back on track after a scorching month at the plate in August, but he's gone hitless in his last nine at-bats with three strikeouts since the calendar flipped to September. It's not the best matchup for Wells, as he's hit just .196 (10-for-51) with none of his 12 home runs on the year against lefties.

Tue Sep 318:54Austin Wells Considered Day-To-Day
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells (hand) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers. This doesn't come as a surprise after Wells was hit by a pitch in the hand during Monday's game. Luckily, Wells is only considered as day-to-day after the X-rays came back clean on Tuesday. Jose Trevino will handle behind the plate and bat seventh versus left-hander Andrew Heaney on Tuesday. Trevino has struggled with a .185 batting average with four home runs and 11 RBI against left-handed pitching this season. He won't be an ideal fantasy option for Tuesday's slate.

Sat Aug 3112:07Austin Wells Hitting Cleanup For Yankees On Saturday
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells is behind the plate and batting cleanup on Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals and right-hander Kyle Gibson at Yankee Stadium, a day after hitting two home runs and driving in four runs in a 6-3 win. The 25-year-old mustachioed catcher has earned primary duties behind the plate this year for the Bombers and has been extremely hot at the plate lately. The former 28th overall pick in 2020 out of the University of Arizona is batting .319 (23-for-72) in the month of August with four home runs, four doubles, 15 RBI and four runs scored in 21 total games to bring his season slash line up to .256/.348/.444 with a .792 OPS in his second year in the big leagues. Wells is now up to 12 home runs and 42 RBI on the year in 93 games played. He has never faced Gibson yet in his career.

Sat Aug 3108:39Austin Wells Drives In Four Runs In Two-Homer Day
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in Friday's 6-3 win over the Cardinals. The two home runs brought him to 12 total for the season, nine of which have come in the last two months. The 25-year-old backstop has increased his batting average each month of the season so far, now hitting .319 in August. For the season, the former first-round draft pick is slashing .256/.348/.444 with a .343 wOBA and 124 wRC+. Managers looking for a hot bat in a good lineup for fantasy should give Wells a look and he's available in almost 75% of Yahoo leagues.

Thu Aug 1511:26Austin Wells Stays Hot With Home Run No. 9
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells collected three hits in Wednesday's 10-2 win over the White Sox, including his ninth home run of the season. The backstop also tallied three RBI in the contest hitting out of the fourth spot in the order. The former first-round draft pick is riding a 10-game hit streak in games in which he's started, and since July 22 is slashing .360/.419/.560 with eight extra-base hits and 18 RBI in 19 games. The University of Arizona product is still available in over 60% of Yahoo leagues, so managers looking for a hot bat at the catcher position who is hitting in the cleanup spot of a potent lineup should consider adding Wells.

Tue Jul 2316:30Austin Wells Sitting Against Southpaw
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells will head to the bench on Tuesday in the opener of the Subway Series against the visiting New York Mets with veteran left-hander Jose Quintana on the mound. Carlos Narvaez will do the catching for right-handed rookie Luis Gil and will bat eighth against Quintana. The 25-year-old Wells hits from the left side and had also started each of the team's last six games, so it's a perfect time to give him a break. The former first-rounder in 2020 out of Arizona has been a bit better so far in the month of July and recorded three hits, including his seventh round-tripper of the year, in Monday's victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Wells has gone 6-for-23 (.261) against southpaws this year, but all seven of his homers have come against right-handed pitching. Narvaez will be making his first career start in the Bronx on Tuesday.

Mon Jul 2221:15Austin Wells Stays Productive With Homer, Three Hits
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells collected three hits in Monday afternoon's win over the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays in the Bronx, blasting his seventh home run of the season in the blowout victory. Wells lined a solo homer off Rays right-hander Zack Littell to right field on Monday, giving the Yankees an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. The 25-year-old lefty-hitting backstop is worth a look for those in two-catcher and AL-only fantasy leagues while primary catcher Jose Trevino (quadriceps) sits on the injured list for the Yankees, batting a solid .277 (13-for-47) with five long balls, 10 RBI, and 10 runs scored in his last 17 games.

Wed Jun 1200:28Austin Wells Hits Three-Run Homer Tuesday
New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells got in on the offensive action in Tuesday's 10-1 drubbing of the Royals. Wells went 2-for-4 with a single, a three-run home run, and a strikeout. The 24-year-old hit a fourth-inning Brady Singer fastball just over the center-field wall. Wells has been disappointing from a fantasy perspective this season, slashing just .211/.295/.325 with two HR and 10 RBI in 132 plate appearances. He showed power promise last season in limited action, but that has not carried over into 2024. He is also getting out-hit by his batterymate, Jose Trevino. Wells has plenty of time in dynasty leagues to develop further as a hitter, but he currently offers little fantasy value in re-draft leagues.

Wed Feb 2118:00Austin Wells To Work Strictly At Catcher
There has been no talk at spring training of New York Yankees catcher Austin Wells working out at other positions, according to manager Aaron Boone. "Right now, I just want him to focus on our staff," Boone said. After trading away Kyle Higashioka in the Juan Soto trade in the offseason, the Yanks now have two primary catching options for 2024 -- Wells and Jose Trevino. Wells has the more potent bat, but Trevino is more advanced defensively. Wells, 24, had four homers in 70 at-bats in just 19 games in his big-league debut last year. There's plenty of power intrigue with the left-handed hitter, but because he and Trevino will likely end up splitting playing time more evenly, Wells probably won't become a realistic option in two-catcher fantasy leagues in 2024 unless Trevino misses time due to an injury.
